Electrode Modification by Laser Ablation to Overcome Mechanical and Scalability Limitations of Solid-State Prealkylation of Electrode Architectures

In this work, laser ablation of Si electrode surfaces is utilized to provide localized strain relief during the Solid State Prealkylation of Electrode Architectures (SPEAR) process, in addition to volumetric expansion relief in the form of free volume channels across the electrode. A hexagonal mesh patterning was employed via laser ablation, where the hexagonal diameter (pitch) was varied from 250 to 1000 µm. It was demonstrated that these channels serve as expansion voids, accommodating the increase in electrode thickness observed during SPEAR and preventing cracking at the electrode surface. Optical microscopy and Raman mapping confirm that Li diffusion is the rate-limiting solid-state process, requiring a 24 h rest period to achieve homogeneous LixSi alloying through the electrode bulk. Electrochemical evaluations in full cells show that a 1000 μm pitch pattern yields a high initial discharge capacity of 2485 mA h g–1 and 86.4% capacity retention after 80 cycles, whereas smaller pitches (<500 μm) result in lithium plating at 4.1 V in full cells paired with NMC 811 due to excessive current collector exposure from the ablation process. XPS analysis reveals that the laser treatment modifies the electrode surface by increasing the Si–O and C–O species, changing the SEI composition observed via an increase in fluorophosphates upon cycling.

An Organic Carboxylate Host for Stable Sodium Metal Batteries

Sodium metal batteries (SMBs) hold great promise for the development of high-energy, sustainable energy storage solutions, but their practical deployment is hampered by unstable solid electrolyte interphases, uncontrollable sodium dendrite growth, and low Coulombic efficiency (CE) during repeated Na plating/stripping cycles. To address these challenges, we introduce an organic interlayer, containing perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride sodium salt (Na4PT), on the surface of Cu current collector. This interlayer forms a sodiophilic organic interphase that lowers the nucleation barriers for sodium deposition and guides the formation of the interphase through polar carbonyl/carboxylate sites and a π-conjugated organic framework. A dendrite-free sodium metal anode is achieved using Na4PT coated Cu current collector. Under capacity-limited Na plating/stripping, Na||Na4PT@Cu half-cells deliver reversible capacities of 500 and 1,000 mAh g−1 at 0.1 and 1 A g−1 for 500 cycles with average CE above 99%. Post-cycling scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements confirm that Na4PT@Cu promotes compact and uniform Na deposits and supports the formation of a stable interphase with reduced parasitic decomposition, directly correlating interfacial chemistry/morphology with high plating/stripping reversibility. These results highlight organic carboxylate coating as a practical interface engineering strategy for dendrite-free SMBs.

Are CO2 batteries ready for the grid? A cross-cutting deployment checklist

Metal-CO2 batteries have attracted considerable research interest in the past decade due to the utilization of the greenhouse CO2 gas. The low cost and abundance of CO2 feedstocks, together with high specific capacity metal anodes, make this technology a promising candidate for electricity-demanding data centers and grids. However, nonstandard data reporting, ambiguous hardware designs, and questionable cycling parameters have emerged as the field has grown. A clear checklist and standardized reporting format for research and development are urgently needed. Here, after carefully re-analyzing 15 Na-CO2 and 9 Li-CO2 studies, we propose a general checklist and a flowchart for CO2 batteries and related gas conversion systems. Specific performance values from a deployment-oriented perspective, based on commercial lithium iron phosphate batteries, are integrated into the list. We frame research and development efforts around grid-relevant outputs, including areal rate and capacity, cyclability, gas utilization, and safety. While illustrated for Na- and Li-CO2 cells, this framework is directly transferable to other CO2 batteries and air/oxygen batteries, helping align benchtop demonstrations with systematic metrics that ultimately govern future deployment.

Operando neutron radiography validates a parameter-free transport–kinetics model for thick solid-state battery cathodes

Tortuosity-weighted interfacial flux for lithium (TWIF-Li) predicts through-thickness Li gradients in thick composite all-solid-state cathodes without fitted parameters. Image-derived microstructures, GITT-derived concentration-dependent solid diffusion, and tortuosity-weighted interfacial kinetics reproduce operando neutron radiography across practical rates, delivering transferable design rules to suppress transport-limited reaction fronts.
