Adverse Effects of Trace Non-polar Binder on Ion Transport in Free-standing Sulfide Solid Electrolyte Separators

Sulfide solid-state electrolyte (SE) possesses high room-temperature ionic conductivity. However, fabrication of the free-standing, sheet-type thin sulfide SE film electrolyte to enable all-solid-state batteries to deliver high energy and power density remains challenging. Herein we show that argyrodite sulfide (Li 6 PS 5 Cl) SE can be slurry cast to form free-standing films with low (≤5 wt%) loadings of poly(isobutylene) (PIB) binder. Two factors contribute to a lower areal specific resistance (ASR) of the thin film SEs benchmarked to the pristine powder pellet SSE counterparts: i) 1–2 orders reduced thickness and ii) reasonably comparable ionic conductivity at room temperature after the isostatic pressing process. Nevertheless, an increasing polymer binder loading inevitably introduced voids in the thin film SEs, compromising anode/electrolyte interfacial ion transport. Our findings highlight that electrolyte/electrode interfacial stability, as well as the selection of slurry components, including sulfide SE, binder, and solvent, play essential roles in thin film sulfide electrolyte development.

Additive manufacturing of strong silica sand structures enabled by polyethyleneimine binder

Abstract Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing (BJAM) is a versatile AM technique that can form parts from a variety of powdered materials including metals, ceramics, and polymers. BJAM utilizes inkjet printing to selectively bind these powder particles together to form complex geometries. Adoption of BJAM has been limited due to its inability to form strong green parts using conventional binders. We report the discovery of a versatile polyethyleneimine (PEI) binder for silica sand that doubled the flexural strength of parts to 6.28 MPa compared with that of the conventional binder, making it stronger than unreinforced concrete (~4.5 MPa) in flexural loading. Furthermore, we demonstrate that PEI in the printed parts can be reacted with ethyl cyanoacrylate through a secondary infiltration, resulting in an increase in flexural strength to 52.7 MPa. The strong printed parts coupled with the ability for sacrificial washout presents potential to revolutionize AM in various applications including construction and tooling.

Distilling nanoscale heterogeneity of amorphous silicon using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) via multiresolution manifold learning

Abstract Accurately identifying the local structural heterogeneity of complex, disordered amorphous materials such as amorphous silicon is crucial for accelerating technology development. However, short-range atomic ordering quantification and nanoscale spatial resolution over a large area on a-Si have remained major challenges and practically unexplored. We resolve phonon vibrational modes of a-Si at a lateral resolution of <60 nm by tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. To project the high dimensional TERS imaging to a two-dimensional manifold space and categorize amorphous silicon structure, we developed a multiresolution manifold learning algorithm. It allows for quantifying average Si-Si distortion angle and the strain free energy at nanoscale without a human-specified physical threshold. The multiresolution feature of the multiresolution manifold learning allows for distilling local defects of ultra-low abundance (< 0.3%), presenting a new Raman mode at finer resolution grids. This work promises a general paradigm of resolving nanoscale structural heterogeneity and updating domain knowledge for highly disordered materials.

Well-designed Crosslinked Polymer Electrolyte Enables High Ionic Conductivity and Enhanced Salt Solvation

A new facile single-step method to fabricate crosslinked polymer electrolyte membranes consisting of branched poly(ethyleneimine), (PEI) and poly(ethylene oxide), (PEO) is demonstrated. The membranes exhibit excellent ionic conductivity (1.2 × 10 –3 S cm –1 at 80 °C) with minimal addition of plasticizer (20 wt%). The amine functional group in the PEI-PEO crosslinked matrix provides Lewis basic and hydrogen bonding characteristics that facilitate the dissolution of lithium salt and enables a higher cation transport number than a PEO crosslinked matrix. The glass transition temperature, degree of crystallinity, and room temperature storage modulus increases with decreasing crosslink density and increasing ratio of free amines. The resultant ionic conductivity and mechanical strength can be flexibly tailored by varying the molar ratio of free amine moieties in the crosslinked PEI-PEO matrix. This study provides an improved synthesis method, in-depth characterization, and fundamental insights on the effect of free amine moieties on the transport properties of a highly conductive gel polymer electrolyte.
