Constructing a multi-functional polymer network for ultra-stable and safe Li-metal batteries

We report the practical application of lithium (Li) metal electrodes is impeded by Li dendrite growth and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Herein, a multi-grafting polymer network, poly(dimethyl siloxane)-g-[poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)-r-sodium poly(p-styrene sulfonate)] (PPS), is chemically synthesized from reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. With integrated stretchability, ionic conductivity, and mechanical robustness, it serves a dual role to stabilize the Li electrode. As artificial SEI layer, the PPS enables superior electrochemical performance in half cells, symmetric cells, and full cells (PPS@Li/LiFePO 4 , capacity retention of >70% after 600 cycles). Utilized as solid polymer electrolyte (SPE), the all-solid-state Li/SPE/LiFePO 4 full cell delivers excellent cycling performance with an unprecedented capacity retention of 90% over 1,700 cycles at 0.5 C and 81% over 1,000 cycles at 1.0 C. With high-voltage LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) as cathode, the Li/SPE/NMC811 cell exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 162.2 mAh g -1 with a capacity retention of 72% after 200 cycles. The assembled solid-state Li/SPE/LiFePO4 pouch cell with SPE exhibits stable cycling performance over 200 cycles with a capacity retention of 75% and still operates well even after curling, folding, and cutting, demonstrating great potential for achieving ultra-safe and high energy density batteries.

Manganese(II) complexes of 1,1'-bis[(pyridin-2-yl)methyl)]-2,2'-bipiperidine (PYBP): Synthesis, structure, catalytic properties in alkene epoxidation with hydrogen peroxide, and related mechanistic studies

In this study, several manganese(II) complexes with the stereoisomers of ligand PYBP (1,1'-bis[(pyridin-2-yl)methyl]-2,2'-bipiperidine) and different anions were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffractometry. Complex [Mn II (rac-PYBP)] 2+ (1) was found to be an efficient catalyst of alkene epoxidation by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of acetic acid in acetonitrile at room temperature. Cyclooctene was converted to its epoxide with up to 91 % yield, 99.6 % selectivity, and the turnover number of 180 within 5 min. Fast epoxidations of cyclohexene, 1-decene, styrene, and cis-stilbene were also achieved. Isomeric complex [Mn II (meso-PYBP)] 2+ (2) was catalytically inactive under the same experimental conditions. Stopped-flow spectrophotometry and freeze-quenched EPR spectra show that complex 2 is not oxidized by H 2 O 2 in the presence of acetic acid (AcOH) but instead undergoes partial ligand protonation and liberation of the Mn 2+ cations due to the relatively poor chelating ability of ligand meso-PYBP. The rac-PYBP isomer acts as a better ligand and retains the coordinated Mn center when complex 1 is treated with the H 2 O 2 /AcOH mixture in acetonitrile solution yielding a mixture of intensely colored intermediates likely involving Mn III , Mn IV , and Mn V complexes. Magnetic susceptibility measurements, UV–vis and EPR spectra suggest that dinuclear complexes [Mn III 2 (μ-O)(μ-OAc)(rac-PYBP) 2 ] 3+ and [Mn III Mn IV (μ-O) 2 (rac-PYBP) 2 ] 3+ gradually accumulate in the reaction mixture as inactivated states of the catalyst. Complex 1 also causes fast decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into O 2 gas and H 2 O, which competes with the epoxidation of alkenes and requires gradual addition of H 2 O 2 for its efficient use. The catalytic activity of complex 1 is strongly influenced by its counterions and decreases in order ClO 4 - ≈ SbF 6 - > NO 3 – > Cl - indicating that labile ligands in the coordination sphere of Mn are required for the activation of H 2 O 2 .

Crystallization-induced emission enhancement of alkyl chain-dependent pyrene-based luminogens: Visual detection of nitro-explosives

In view of the widespread applications and urgent need for efficient blue emitting materials, the synthesis of such materials has seen renewed interest. In the present work, three alkyl chain-dependent blue emitting pyrene-based luminogens were synthesized and characterized. Here, the experimental results show that these luminogens exhibited high photoluminescence efficiency both in solution (>86%) and in the solid state (>35%). Interestingly, 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (pentylphenyl)pyrene (TPPy), as a photoelectric functional material, was endowed with higher quantum yield (72%) and competitiveness due to a remarkable crystallization-induced emission enhancement (CIEE) property. More importantly, TPPy exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for ortho-nitroaniline (o-NA) with low limit of detection (9.99 × 10 -8 M), which is mainly due to the distinctive odd-even effects of the terminal alkyl chain. The results demonstrate that this type of luminogen can potentially be utilized for practical applications in the field of contaminant or explosive detection as a sensitive and portable fluorimeter.

Benchmarking Solid-State Batteries Containing Sulfide Separators: Effects of Electrode Composition and Stack Pressure

Integrating sulfide separators into solid-state batteries (SSBs) containing high energy cathodes typically requires one or more materials and engineering solutions including: (i) applying interfacial coatings to mitigate electrolyte decomposition, (ii) applying high stack pressures to form robust solid-solid contacts, and (iii) using alloying anodes to avoid Li dendrite formation. Despite the promise of these approaches, a lack of standardized testing protocols makes it difficult to directly compare results among different studies. To address this problem, the present work benchmarks the performance of SSBs containing β-Li 3 PS 4 (LPS) separators and composite cathodes. By systematically varying the anode/cathode composition and stack pressure, this work demonstrates that cathode design is a major bottleneck for solid-state cells cycled at low rates (<100 µA cm -2 ). Operando stack pressure measurements show that, while mechanical confinement generally promotes higher active material utilization and cycling stability, this strategy alone does not address interfacial reactivity between LPS and high voltage cathodes. Here, these results also demonstrate that stress evolution during cycling is dominated by volume changes at the Li metal anode. Finally, we show that FeS 2 cathodes with moderate operating voltages (<3 V vs Li/Li + ) exhibit superior cycling performance compared to high voltage cathodes by facilitating formation of stable cathode/electrolyte interfaces.

Solution Processed Ternary Tin (II) Alloy as Hole–Transport Layer of Sn–Pb Perovskite Solar Cells for Enhanced Efficiency and Stability

Tin-lead (Sn-Pb) narrow bandgap (NBG) perovskites show great potential in both single-junction and all-perovskite tandem solar cells. Sn-Pb perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are still limited by low charge collection efficiency and poor stability. Here, we report a ternary Sn (II) alloy of SnOCl as the hole-transport material (HTM) with a work function of 4.95 eV for Sn-Pb PSCs. The solution processed SnOCl layer has a texture structure which not only reduces the optical loss of the devices but also changes grain growth of Sn-Pb perovskites and boosts the carrier diffusion length to 3.63 μm. The formation of small perovskite grains at the HTM/perovskite interface is suppressed. These result in an almost constant internal quantum efficiency of 96 ± 2% across the absorption spectrum of Sn-Pb perovskites. The SnOCl HTM significantly enhances the stability of Sn-Pb PSCs with 87% of its initial efficiency retained after 1-sun illumination for 1,200 h, and keep 85% efficiency under 85°C thermal stress for 1,500 h. Furthermore, the hybrid HTM further improve the stabilized efficiencies of single-function Sn-Pb PSCs and all-perovskite tandem solar cells to 23.2% and 25.9%, respectively. This discovery opens an avenue to the multi-component metal alloys as HTM in PSCs.

Carbazole-Based Hole Transport Polymer for Methylammonium-Free Tin-Lead Perovskite Solar Cells with Enhanced Efficiency and Stability

As the most commonly used hole transport material (HTM) in tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) limits the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of the PSCs due to its acidic characteristics. Herein, an easily synthesized polymer HTM poly[(phenyl)imino[9-(2-ethylhexyl)carbazole]-2,7-diyl] (CzAn) with a shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of -4.95 eV is used in a p-i-n structure, methylammonium-free, Sn-Pb PSC to replace PEDOT:PSS. Upon optimization using doping and surface engineering, high quality Sn-Pb PSCs could be successfully fabricated, boosting the PCE to 22.6% (stabilized PCE of 21.3%) compared with 21.2% for PEDOT:PSS. The perovskite films prepared on the modified CzAn HTM possess improved crystallinity, reduced trap-state density, and larger carrier mobility resulting in PSCs with greatly improved stability.

Unraveling Ion Transport in Trifluoromethanesulfonimide Pentablock Copolymer Membranes in Nonaqueous Electrolytes

Cation exchange membranes provide a key function in various nonaqueous energy storage technologies. As such, understanding the role of a nonaqueous liquid electrolyte on ion transport through a membrane is imperative. This study unravels relationships between membrane ion transport and electrolyte salt concentration utilizing a trifluoromethanesulfonimide-based pentablock copolymer membrane with polar and nonpolar nonaqueous electrolyte solutions. Here, the membrane plasticized with propylene carbonate (PC) exhibits a single-ion conductivity of 9.3 × 10 –6 S/cm at 25 °C. Tailoring the nonaqueous electrolyte and electrolyte salt concentration enables the single-ion conducting membrane to maintain a high cation transport number, >0.75, and boost ion conductivity more than 10 times to 1.3 × 10 –4 S/cm at 25 °C for the PC-based electrolyte solution. The findings provide critically important design parameters for energy storage systems utilizing nonaqueous electrolytes, such as Li- and Na-ion batteries and nonaqueous flow battery technologies.

Structure-controlled intramolecular charge transfer in asymmetric pyrene-based luminogens: synthesis, characterization and optical properties

Full-colour emitting materials have been widely studied driven by their promising potential application in fluorescence imaging and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, the synthesis and charactization of four asymmetric D–A type pyrene-based luminogens 2 is presented. Here, the experimental results revealed that this type of pyrene derivative possesses tunable optical properties by introducing D/A groups at the 1-, 3-positions and K-region (5-position) of the pyrene core. Wide emission bands from deep blue (429 nm) to yellow (567 nm) were obtained in different solutions or states. Combined with the theoretical calculations, this work provides an efficient strategy to develop pyrene-based full-colour photoelectric materials.

Defect engineering in wide-bandgap perovskites for efficient perovskite–silicon tandem solar cells

Wide-bandgap (WBG) mixed-halide perovskites show promise of realizing efficient tandem solar cells but at present suffer from large open-circuit voltage loss and the mechanism is still unclear. Here we show that WBG perovskites with iodide–bromide compositions have an increased concentration of deep traps induced by iodide interstitials, which limits performance of WBG perovskite cells. We employ tribromide ions to suppress the iodide interstitial formation and thus reduce charge recombination in bladed WBG perovskite films of Cs 0.1 FA 0.2 MA 0.7 Pb(I 0.85 Br 0.15 )3. The 1-µm-thick opaque WBG perovskite solar cells have an efficiency of 21.9%, a small open-circuit voltage deficit of 0.40 V and a large fill factor of 83%. The efficiency of the best-performing monolithic perovskite–silicon tandem cell using this perovskite reaches 28.6%. Furthermore, the tribromide addition also suppresses light-induced phase segregation in WBG perovskites and thus enhance device stability. Encapsulated tandem cells maintain 93% of their initial efficiency after operation for 550 h.

Continuously Doping BiM 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ into Electron-Doped Superconductor by CaH 2 Annealing Method

As a typical hole-doped cuprate superconductor, Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Bi2212) carrier doping is mostly determined by its oxygen content. Traditional doping methods can regulate its doping level within the range of hole doping. Here we report the first application of CaH 2 annealing method in regulating the doping level of Bi2212. By continuously controlling the anneal time, a series of differently doped samples can be obtained. The combined experimental results of x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, resistance and Hall measurements demonstrate that the CaH 2 induced topochemical reaction can effectively change the oxygen content of Bi2212 within a very wide range, even switching from hole doping to electron doping. Further, we also found evidence of a low-T c superconducting phase in the electron doping side.

Significant improvement of conversion efficiency by passivation of low-angle grain boundaries in flexible low-cost single-crystal-like GaAs thin-film solar cells directly deposited on metal tape

We develop an easily implementable yet effective process to achieve high power conversion efficiency in newly-developed flexible single-crystal-like GaAs thin-film photovoltaic solar cells on cheap metal tape. We study various techniques on the fabricated devices to passivate the defect states associated with dangling bonds at low-angle grain boundaries (LA-GBs) existing in the single-crystal-like GaAs material. We report that sulfur by trioctylphosphine sulfide (TOP:S) solution treatment can partially but effectively passivate the defect states at the LA-GBs to increase all the solar cell performance parameters of open-circuit voltage VOC (33.2%), short-circuit current JSC (19.5%), and fill factor FF (25.8%), resulting in the improvement of the power conversion efficiency more than double. The material and device characterizations and numerical modeling are performed to propose a mechanism, also suggesting that the power conversion efficiency higher than 20%, which is an important target milestone in emerging solar cell technologies, can be achieved. This work presents the first effective passivation of the bulk defects in GaAs at the device level and can also offer a solution for other photonic and electronic devices using non-single-crystalline GaAs films for flexible electronics.

Selective Plasticization of Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) Block in Nanostructured Polystyrene– PEO– Polystyrene Triblock Copolymer Electrolytes

The plasticization of a polymer electrolyte usually promotes its ionic conductivity but decreases its storage modulus due to the increased polymer chain flexibility. Herein, we show that such a tradeoff between the ionic conductivity and the mechanical robustness of the polymer electrolyte can be alleviated by selective plasticization of the ion-conductive block, such as poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in a polystyrene (PS)– PEO–PS block copolymer (SEO) electrolyte using an ether type plasticizer, tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME). In this work, at maximum plasticizer loading, the room temperature ionic conductivity increases by up to 3 orders, whereas the storage modulus, G' reduces to half, is still on the order of 10 2 MPa. At above the melting temperature of the PEO block, the dynamic storage modulus, G' of the plasticized membrane surpasses its dry PS-PEO-PS counterpart. Such a phenomenon results from that, a) TEGDME co-crystallizes with PEO to promote its crystallinity and hence the storage modulus, b) TEGDME swells the amorphous PEO phase to enhance the polymer chain segmental mobility and hence ionic conductivity, and c) the PS phase remains intact from TEGDME to keep the SEO elastic.

Membrane design for non-aqueous redox flow batteries: Current status and path forward

Redox flow batteries are promising technologies for large-scale, long-duration energy storage applications. Among them, non-aqueous redox flow batteries (NARFB) represent a transformative flow battery system since NARFBs potentially offer a higher energy density than aqueous flow batteries. However, many technical challenges remain for NARFBs, including the lack of high-performance membranes, low solubility of redox materials, and poor cycling efficiencies. Membranes serve a vital function in NARFBs, as they allow for selective ion transport while providing separation between the anolyte and catholyte. NARFB membrane development is an emerging research area, and this article reviews their design and critical factors that influence membrane properties, including solvent uptake, ion transport, and redox species permeability. A greater understanding of membrane behavior in non-aqueous solutions provides design principles for developing next-generation membranes for NARFB. In conclusion, we summarize the challenges, target metrics, and future perspectives for NARFBs.

Molybdenum Carbide Electrocatalyst In Situ Embedded in Porous Nitrogen–Rich Carbon Nanotubes Promotes Rapid Kinetics in Sodium–Metal–Sulfur Batteries

This work is the first report of a molybdenum carbide-based electrocatalyst for sulfur-based sodium metal batteries (SMBs/NMBs). MoC/Mo 2 C is in-situ grown on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes in parallel with formation of extensive nanoporosity. Sulfur impregnation (50 wt% S) results in unique triphasic architecture termed MoC/Mo 2 C@PCNT-S. Quasi-solid-state phase transformation to Na 2 S is promoted in carbonate electrolyte, with in-situ time-resolved Raman, XPS and optical analysis demonstrating minimal soluble polysulfides. MoC/Mo 2 C@PCNT-S cathodes delivered among the most promising rate performance characteristics in literature, achieving 987 mAh g -1 at 1 Ag -1 , 818 mAh g -1 at 3 A g -1 , and 621 mAh g -1 at 5 A g -1 . The cells deliver superior cycling stability, retaining 650 mAh g -1 after 1000 cycles at 1.5 Ag -1 , corresponding to 0.028% capacity decay per cycle. High mass loading cathodes (64 wt% S, 12.7 mg cm -2 ) also show cycling stability, with anode degradation due to deep plating/stripping driving capacity decay. Density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that formation energy of Na 2 S x (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) on surface of MoC/Mo 2 C is significantly lowered compared to analogous redox in liquid. Strong binding of Na 2 S x (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) on MoC/Mo 2 C surfaces results from charge transfer between the sulfur and Mo sites on carbides' surface.

16.52% Efficiency All-Polymer Solar Cells with High Tolerance of the Photoactive Layer Thickness

All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) have drawn growing attention and achieved tremendous progress recently, but their power conversion efficiency (PCE) still lags behind small-molecule-acceptor (SMA)-based PSCs due to the relative difficulty on morphology control of polymer photoactive blends. Here, in this work, low-cost PTQ10 is introduced as a second polymer donor (a third component) into the PM6:PY-IT blend to finely tune the energy-level matching and microscopic morphology of the polymer blend photoactive layer. The addition of PTQ10 decreases the π–π stacking distance, and increases the π–π stacking coherence length and the ordered face-on molecular packing orientation, which improves the charge separation and transport in the photoactive layer. Moreover, the deeper highest occupied molecular orbital energy level of the PTQ10 polymer donor than PM6 leads to higher open-circuit voltage of the ternary all-PSCs. As a result, a PCE of 16.52% is achieved for ternary all-PSCs, which is one of the highest PCEs for all-PSCs. In addition, the ternary devices exhibit a high tolerance of the photoactive layer thickness with high PCEs of 15.27% and 13.91% at photoactive layer thickness of ≈205 and ≈306 nm, respectively, which are the highest PCEs so far for all-PSCs with a thick photoactive layer.
