Electronic origin of half-metal to semiconductor transition and colossal magnetoresistance in spinel HgCr 2 Se 4

Half metals are ferromagnets hosting spin-polarized conducting carriers and are crucial for spintronics applications. The chromium spinel HgCr 2 Se 4 represents a unique type of half-metal, which features a half-metal to semiconductor transition (HMST) and exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) across the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic (FM-PM) transition. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find that the Fermi surface of n-type HgCr 2 Se 4 (n–HgCr 2 Se 4 ) consists of a single electron pocket which moves above the Fermi level (E F ) upon the FM-PM transition, leading to the HMST. Such a Lifshitz transition manifests a giant band splitting which originates from the exchange interaction unveiled with a specific chemical nonstoichiometry. The exchange band splitting and the chemical nonstoichiometry are two key ingredients to the HMST and CMR, consistent with our ab initio calculation. Our findings provide spectroscopic evidence of the electronic origin of the anomalous properties of HgCr 2 Se 4 , which address the unique phase transition in half-metals.

Residual fracture energy of natural and recycled aggregate concrete after exposure to high temperatures

Abstract Fracture energy ( G F ) represents the average total energy consumed in the whole process of crack propagation. Using one parameter of G F , it is not sufficient to describe the fracture behavior during crack stable and unstable propagation periods. In this study, the G F , stable fracture energy ( G FS ) and unstable fracture energy ( G FU ) of natural and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) were investigated by using three‐point bending tests. Totally, 128 cubic specimens (100 mm × 100 mm × 100 mm) and 64 notched beams with size of 510 mm × 100 mm × 100 mm were manufactured to test the compressive strength ( f cu ), splitting tensile strength ( f t ), load–deflection (P‐δ), and load‐cracking mouth opening displacement (P‐CMOD) curves, considering different replacement levels (0%, 30%, 70%, and 100%) of recycled coarse aggregate (RA) and high temperatures exposure (20, 100, 200, and 300°C). The effects of RA substitutions and temperatures on basic mechanical properties, G F , G FS , and G FU were analyzed. The results demonstrated that the f cu , f t , and elastic modulus ( E ) decreased with the incremental temperature. The G FS of concrete with different RA substitutions first decreased and then increased, and the minimum value appeared at 200°C. The G F and G FU of concrete with different RA substitutions increased with the elevated temperature, and the increase rate decreased with RA substitutions. When the temperature is less than 100°C, the G F and G FU of concrete remained mostly unchanged with the increase of RA substitutions, while the temperature reached 200 and 300°C, the G F and G FU of concrete increased and decreased with the increase of RA substitutions, respectively.

Electronic structure of the Si-containing topological Dirac semimetal CaAl 2 Si 2

There has been an upsurge in the discovery of topological quantum materials, where various topological insulators and semimetals have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. However, very few of them contain silicon, the most widely used element in the electronics industry. Recently, ternary compound CaA l 2 S i 2 has been predicted to be a topological Dirac semimetal, hosting Lorentz-symmetry-violating quasiparticles with a strongly tilted conical band dispersion. In this work, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the comprehensive electronic structure of CaA l 2 S i 2 . A pair of topological Dirac crossings is observed along the k z direction, in good agreement with the ab initio calculations, confirming the topological Dirac semimetal nature of the compound. Our study expands the topological material family on Si-containing compounds, which have great application potential in realizing low-cost, nontoxic electronic devices with topological quantum states.

Electronic structure and spatial inhomogeneity of iron-based superconductor FeS

Iron-based superconductor family FeX (X = S, Se, Te) has been one of the research foci in physics and material science due to their record-breaking superconducting temperature (FeSe film) and rich physical phenomena. Recently, FeS, the least studied FeX compound (due to the difficulty in synthesizing high quality macroscopic crystals) attracted much attention because of its puzzling superconducting pairing symmetry. In this work, combining scanning tunneling microscopy and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with sub-micron spatial resolution, we investigate the intrinsic electronic structures of superconducting FeS from individual single crystalline domains. Unlike FeTe or FeSe, FeS remains identical tetragonal structure from room temperature down to 5 K, and the band structures observed can be well reproduced by our ab-initio calculations. Remarkably, mixed with the 1 × 1 tetragonal metallic phase, we also observe the coexistence of √5 x √5 reconstructed insulating phase in the crystal, which not only helps explain the unusual properties of FeS, but also demonstrates the importance of using spatially resolved experimental tools in the study of this compound.

Microstructure and Properties of AlCoCrFeNiTi High-Entropy Alloy Coating on AISI1045 Steel Fabricated by Laser Cladding

AISI1045 steel is widely used in mechanical engineering. In spite of the favorable toughness and strength, the surface properties of AISI1045 steel, such as hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, are not ideal. Therefore, surface modification of AISI1045 is necessary, especially for the parts suffering severe work condition. Laser cladding is a promising surface modification technology. In this work, the AlCoCrFeNiTi high-entropy alloy (HEA) coatings were prepared on the AISI1045 steel to improve its surface properties. Metallurgical bonding is obtained between the coating and the substrate. The microstructure and surface properties of the coating were characterized by scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive spectrometry, x-ray diffraction, electrochemical workstation, microhardness tester and pin-on-ring wear tester. The microstructure of the coating produced by laser cladding is dendritic. The AlCoCrFeNiTi HEA coating is mainly composed of disordered body-centered cubic phase (Fe-Cr), ordered B2 phase (AlNi) and intermetallic phase (Ti-rich). The coating shows excellent abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance in comparison with the substrate. The maximum microhardness of the coating reaches approximately 865 HV, which is 4.5 times of AISI1045 steel.
