Hole‐Carrier‐Dominant Transport in 2D Single‐Crystal Copper

Abstract In 2D noble metals like copper, the carrier scattering at grain boundaries has obscured the intrinsic nature of electronic transport. However, it is demonstrated that the intrinsic nature of transport by hole carriers in 2D copper can be revealed by growing thin films without grain boundaries. As even a slight deviation from the twin boundary is perceived as grain boundaries by electrons, it is only through the thorough elimination of grain boundaries that the hidden hole‐like attribute of 2D single‐crystal copper can be unmasked. Two types of Fermi surfaces, a large hexagonal Fermi surface centered at the zone center and the triangular Fermi surface around the zone corner, tightly matching to the calculated Fermi surface topology, confirmed by angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and vivid nonlinear Hall effects of the 2D single‐crystal copper account for the presence of hole carriers experimentally. This breakthrough suggests the potential to manipulate the majority carrier polarity in metals by means of grain boundary engineering in a 2D geometry.

Reshaped Weyl fermionic dispersions driven by Coulomb interactions in MoTe 2

In this work, we report the direct evidence of impacts of the Coulomb interaction in a prototypical Weyl semimetal, MoTe 2 , that alter its bare bands in a wide range of energy and momentum. Our quasiparticle interference patterns measured using scanning tunneling microscopy are shown to match the joint density of states of quasiparticle energy bands including momentum-dependent self-energy corrections, while electronic energy bands based on the other simpler local approximations of the Coulomb interaction fail to explain neither the correct number of quasiparticle pockets nor the shape of their dispersions observed in our spectrum. With this, we predict a transition between type-I and type-II Weyl fermions with doping and resolve its disparate quantum oscillation experiments, thus highlighting the critical roles of Coulomb interactions in layered Weyl semimetals.

Selective patterning of out-of-plane piezoelectricity in MoTe 2 via focused ion beam

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have a strain-sensitive nature and can only exhibit in-plane piezoelectricity, owing to their in-plane inversion symmetry breaking, which limits their practical applications for vertical stimulations. Here, we demonstrated the capability of focused ion beams to create out-of-plane piezoelectricity on multi-layered MoTe 2 . We utilized a focused helium ion beam to selectively pattern the out-of-plane piezoelectricity via defect engineering in a layered MoTe 2 flake. The generated out-of-plane piezoelectricity in the desired area was quantitatively examined using atomic force microscopy, and ion beam irradiation-induced defect formation that gave rise to inversion symmetry breaking was confirmed. These results indicated that the out-of-plane piezoelectricity can be selectively patterned through a focused helium ion beam, and it is expected that this approach can also be applied to other classes of TMDs and can expand the application fields of TMD-based devices.
