An adaptive control scheme for a flexible manipulator

The problem of controlling a single link flexible manipulator is considered. A self-tuning adaptive control scheme is proposed which consists of a least squares on-line parameter identification of an equivalent linear model followed by a tuning of the gains of a pole placement controller using the parameter estimates. Since the initial parameter values for this model are assumed unknown, the use of arbitrarily chosen initial parameter estimates in the adaptive controller would result in undesirable transient effects. Hence, the initial stage control is carried out with a PID controller. Once the identified parameters have converged, control is transferred to the adaptive controller. Naturally, the relevant issues in this scheme are tests for parameter convergence and minimization of overshoots during control switch-over. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, simulation results are presented with an analytical nonlinear dynamic model of a single link flexible manipulator.

Direct Transient Analysis of a Fuze Assembly by Axisymmetric Solid Elements

A fuze assembly, which consists of three major parts, nose, collar and sleeve, was designed to survive severe transverse impact giving a maximum base acceleration of 20.000 G. It is shown that hoop failure occurred in the collar after the impact. They also showed that by bonding the collar to the nose, the collar was able to survive the same impact. To find out the effectiveness of the bonding quantitatively, axisymmetric solid elements TRAPAX and TRIAAX were used in modelling the fuze and direct transient analysis was performed. The dynamic stresses in selected elements on the bonded and unbonded collars were compared. The peak hoop stresses in the unbonded collar were found to be up to three times higher than those in the bonded collar. The NASTRAN results explained the observed hoop failure in the unbonded collar. In addition, static and eigenvalue runs were performed as checks on the models prior to the transient runs. The use of the MPCAX cards and the existence and contributors of the calculated first several nearly identical natural frequencies are addressed.

Optimum design of structures of composite materials in response to aerodynamic noise and noise transmission

Elastic wave propagation and attenuation in a model fiber matrix was investigated. Damping characteristics in graphite epoxy composite materials were measured. A sound transmission test facility suitable to incorporate into NASA Ames wind tunnel for measurement of transmission loss due to sound generation in boundary layers was constructed. Measurement of transmission loss of graphite epoxy composite panels was also included.

Prevention of thermal bending of multilayered beams and plates

By adding an extra layer to multilayer beams or plates of different isotropic materials, it is possible to prevent the thermal bending of these materials. With the proper selection of thermoelastic properties the curvature produced prior to this addition would be eliminated. Several numerical examples are presented for various temperature distributions. A simple experiment was conducted, involving the addition of a brass strip to a bimetallic strip made of aluminum and steel at room temperature. The trimetal strip was placed in a furnace and remained straight for varying temperatures.

Application of NASTRAN in nonlinear analysis of a cartridge case neck separation malfunction

The problem of case neck separation malfunction in the field of ammunition structural analysis is investigated. The axi-symmetric solid of revolution RING element was utilized in the manual piecewise linear analysis to obtain the expansion of the wall of the cartridge case and barrel chamber by the pressure of propellant gases and the stresses in the structure. The analysis included the varying material properties along the wall of the case and the chamber. Additional instructions were provided to change the element material ID's without recomputing the entire stiffness matrix.

Transient analysis using conical shell elements

The use of the NASTRAN conical shell element in static, eigenvalue, and direct transient analyses is demonstrated. The results of a NASTRAN static solution of an externally pressurized ring-stiffened cylinder agree well with a theoretical discontinuity analysis. Good agreement is also obtained between the NASTRAN direct transient response of a uniform cylinder to a dynamic end load and one-dimensional solutions obtained using a method of characteristics stress wave code and a standing wave solution. Finally, a NASTRAN eigenvalue analysis is performed on a hydroballistic model idealized with conical shell elements.

Attenuation of stress waves in single and multi-layered structures

Analytical and experimental studies were made of the attenuation of the stress waves during passage through single and multilayer structures. The investigation included studies on elastic and plastic stress wave propagation in the composites and those on shock mitigating material characteristics such as dynamic stress-strain relations and energy absorbing properties. The results of the studies are applied to methods for reducing the stresses imposed on a spacecraft during planetary or ocean landings.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of stress wave attenuation in fiber reinforced composites.

The propagation of an initialrcidrical pressure pulse through a linear elastic fiber reinforced composite medium is analysed, both experimentally and analytically. In the experiment, tests were performed on plates with single and multiple circular inclusions embedded in a matrix of lower characteristic impedance. Sharp compression pulses were generated at an edge of the plate. Strain gages were mounted on various positions of the plate to determine the attenuation of the transient stress in the fiber reinforced composite. The qualitative analytical treatment is based on the methods of propagating stress discontinuities. Computer programs were written to numerically determine the changes in the shape of the leading wave front and the stresses immediately behind it. Experimental results for the attenuation of stress wave on steel-aluminum and steel-brass fiber-matrix composites compared very well with the computed analytical results when the applied pressure is generated by small explosive charges. The results did not compare well when the applied pressure is generated by projectile impact.
