Non-invasive ventral cervical magnetoneurography as a proxy of in vivo lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation

Maintenance of autonomic homeostasis is continuously calibrated by sensory fibers of the vagus nerve and sympathetic chain that convey compound action potentials (CAPs) to the central nervous system. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) intravenous challenge reliably elicits a robust inflammatory response that can resemble systemic inflammation and acute endotoxemia. Here, we administered LPS intravenously in nine healthy subjects while recording ventral cervical magnetoneurography (vcMNG)-derived CAPs at the rostral Right Nodose Ganglion (RNG) and the caudal Right Carotid Artery (RCA) with optically pumped magnetometers (OPM). We observed vcMNG RNG and RCA neural firing rates that tracked changes in TNF-α levels in the systemic circulation. Further, endotype subgroups based on high and low IL-6 responders segregate RNG CAP frequency (at 30-120 min) and based on high and low IL-10 response discriminate RCA CAP frequency (at 0-30 min). These vcMNG tools may enhance understanding and management of the neuroimmune axis that can guide personalized treatment based on an individual’s distinct endophenotype.

Transient behavior of oxide fuels with controlled microstructure and Cr2O3 additive

Abstract Microstructure and Cr 2 O 3 doping profoundly impact the thermal-mechanical properties and fracture of oxides fuels. It is a challenge to study the transient behavior of nuclear fuels under loss-of-coolant-event (LOCA). In this study, the crack behavior of UO 2 pellets with controlled grain structure and Cr 2 O 3 doping was tested with rapid power ramping (300−900 °C per min) mimicking a prototypical LOCA heating profile. Dense micron-sized UO 2 pellets display well-maintained integrity without cracking with the ramping up to 1500 °C at a heating rate of 8 °C per second. Fracture occurs in both pure and Cr 2 O 3 -doped dense nano-sized UO 2 pellets. The Cr 2 O 3 doped oxide fuel pellet with a larger grain size (~ 22.2 μm) displays the best performance under LOCA testing due to its highest thermal conductivity under high temperature. FEA calculations suggest a temperature gradient across the fuel pellet during transient testing, resulting in residual stress and cracking, which can be correlated with their thermal-mechanical properties.

Manufacturing porous U-10Zr metallic fuels with controllable microstructure by volume control spark plasma sintering

In this paper, the volume control spark plasma sintering tool has been designed and applied to sinter porous U-10Zr metallic fuels, by which the sintered sample volume can be precisely controlled. Ethanol and NH 4 HCO 3 are used to control the powder compact or as pore formers to control the pore size and pore structure. Without pore formers, the fuel pellet displays an inhomogeneous microstructure consisting of highly porous and highly densified areas. Uneven powder stacking in the green body results in a non-uniform microstructure, and in the closed-packed area, Joule heating accelerates the neck formation and densification. The addition of ethanol reduces the friction between the powders, resulting in isolated pores formed by the stacking of powders during the sintering. By adding NH 4 HCO 3 , the pore size, and structure can be well controlled, and an interconnected pore structure can be obtained upon the decomposition of the NH 4 HCO 3 . Further, a uniform microstructure and pore distributions can be achieved through the U-10Zr fuel pellets by controlling current flow during the volume control SPS sintering. The microstructure and phase characterization of the sintered porous U-10Zr pellets show major phases of α-U and α-Zr for the sample with short dwelling. For the sample with long dwelling (30 min), the ω UZr 2 in the Zr-enriched area has been observed. The strategy of volume control SPS sintering with the assistance of pore formers could be used to fabricate porous U-10Zr metallic fuels to mimic the microstructure evolution of irradiated metallic fuels (including porosity) and could enable a possible solution for the design of new sodium-free metallic fuels for high burnup.

Chemical durability of multicomponent lanthanide zirconate solid solutions

Multicomponent zirconate solid solutions A 2 Zr 2 O 7 (A= (Sm,Yb), (Sm,Yb,Gd), (Sm,Yb,Gd,Er), and (Sm,Yb,Gd,Er,Dy)) were synthesized through spark plasma sintering and their chemical durability was investigated via semi-dynamic leaching tests in pH = 1 nitric acid at 90°C. Incongruent dissolution occurred for all samples with the preferential elemental release of zirconium in all A 2 Zr 2 O 7 except for high entropy (Sm,Yb,Gd,Er,Dy)Zr 2 O 7 which displays a congruent release of the A-site elements and Zr. A strong positive correlation was found between the lanthanide elemental release rates and the A-site cation size disorder, whereas a negative correlation was observed between the elemental release rates and mixing entropy.

Chemical durability and corrosion-induced microstructure evolution of compositionally complex titanate pyrochlore waste forms with uranium incorporation

Chemical durability of compositionally-complex rare-earth titanate pyrochlore solid solutions with or without uranium incorporation was investigated by semi-dynamic leaching testing. A Ti-enriched amorphous passivation film formed on the surface due to the surface alteration-reorganization mechanism with preferential release of the weakly oxygen-bonded rare earth elements. Elemental release was found to be strongly correlated with chemical disorder, with a negligible correlation with entropy. The release rate of the uranium gradually decreased with increasing numbers of components, implying a possibility of designing and optimizing waste form performance with enhanced chemical durability by controlling composition complexity and chemical disorder for effective nuclear waste management.

A global daily soil moisture dataset derived from Chinese FengYun Microwave Radiation Imager (MWRI)(2010–2019)

Surface soil moisture (SSM) is an important variable in drought monitoring, floods predicting, weather forecasting, etc. and plays a critical role in water and heat exchanges between land and atmosphere. SSM products from L-band observations, such as the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Mission, have proven to be optimal global estimations. Although X-band has a lower sensitivity to soil moisture than that of L-band, Chinese FengYun-3 series satellites (FY-3A/B/C/D) have provided sustainable and daily multiple SSM products from X-band since 2008. This research developed a new global SSM product (NNsm-FY) from FY-3B MWRI from 2010 to 2019, transferred high accuracy of SMAP L-band to FY-3B X-band. The NNsm-FY shows good agreement with in-situ observations and SMAP product and has a higher accuracy than that of official FY-3B product. With this new dataset, Chinese FY-3 satellites may play a larger role and provide opportunities of sustainable and longer-term soil moisture data record for hydrological study.

Manufacturing porous U10Zr fuels with controlled porosities by SPS and thermal properties

To accommodate the swelling of metallic fuels induced by the fission gas release during burnup in sodium fast reactor for a sodium-free fuel option, advanced U-10Zr fuels with controlled porosity were designed and demonstrated by spark plasma sintering. U-10Zr fuel pellets with manufactured porosities varying from 35% up to fully dense fuel pellets have been fabricated by controlling ball milling times of the starting uranium powders, sintering temperature, pressure, and duration, and the correlation among the microstructure control – porosity – sintering conditions has been established. To further mimick the pore structure in irradiated fuels, different pore formers (NaCl and NH4HCO3) have been used to control the pore size and distribution. Microstructure characterization indicates a lamellar reaction zone of U and Zr, differing from the arc-melted U-10Zr as a result of rapid consolidation of SPS at lower temperature and short durations. The thermal conductivity of U10Zr with different porosities are also measured. Here this work demonstrates the success in manufacturing new metallic fuel forms with controlled porosities and pore distribution, which can be used as model systems to investigate the thermal transfer behavior of metallic fuels in the reactor.

Eigenstate thermalization and disappearance of quantum many-body scar states in weakly interacting fermion systems

The recent discovery of quantum many-body scar states has revealed the possibility of having states with low entanglement that violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis in nonintegrable systems. Eigenstates with low entanglement entropy are rare but naturally exist in the integrable system of free fermions. Here, we demonstrate analytically that these atypical states would be always eliminated when an arbitrary weak interaction is introduced between the fermions. In particular, we show that the probability of having a many-body scar state with entanglement entropy satisfying a sub-volume scaling law decreases double exponentially as the system size. Furthermore, our results provide a quantitative argument for the disappearance of scar states in interacting fermion systems.

Grain growth kinetics of the gamma phase metallic uranium

We report metallic uranium is a leading fuel form for sodium cooled fast reactors as an enabling technology of future nuclear energy systems. Mechanistic understanding of fuel behaviors and kinetics under thermodynamic equilibrium and highly non-equilibrium conditions are essential for evaluating fuel performance. It is important to understand and predict the grain and pore evolutions of metallic fuels under thermal and irradiation conditions. However, very limited data are available on the grain growth kinetics and mechanisms of pure gamma phase uranium. In this paper, the pure gamma uranium pellets with different grain structures were fabricated by combining high-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering. Isothermal annealing tests were performed to investigate the grain growth behavior of the pure gamma phase uranium with different initial grain sizes. A parabolic relationship in grain growth with time was identified for the submicron-sized (374 nm) sample. In contrast, for the nano-sized (137 nm) sample, the grain growth shows a linear relationship with time. The activation energies of grain growth were determined as 199.5 KJ/mol and 80.6 KJ/mol for nano-sized and submicron-sized grain structures, respectively. For the nano-sized sample, the rate-control step of grain growth is dominated by the triple-junction migration, in which the grain boundary triple junction drags the grain growth, leading to a higher activation energy than the bulk diffusion. The dominating mechanism for the submicron-sized sample is grain boundary diffusion. The mechanistic understanding and critical data obtained on the kinetics of pure uranium phases will be useful to evaluate fuel behavior under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions and develop a high fidelity model to predict fuel performance.

Contribution of Tibetan Plateau ecosystems to local and remote precipitation through moisture recycling

The ecosystems of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) provide multiple important ecosystem services that benefit both local populations and those beyond, such as through climate regulation services on precipitation for East Asia and China. However, the precipitation regulation service of the TP ecosystems for supplying moisture and maintaining precipitation is yet to be evaluated. In this study, we used the moisture recycling framework and a moisture tracking model to quantify the precipitation regulation services of TP ecosystems for their contribution to precipitation. We found TP ecosystems contributed substantially to local and downwind precipitation, with a declined contribution from 221 mm/year for the TP and neighboring areas, to <10 mm/year for eastern China and other surrounding countries. Among ecosystem types, grassland contributed most to precipitation, followed by barren and snow lands, forests, and shrublands. In terms of seasonality, precipitation contribution from TP ecosystems was greater in summer months than in non-summer months for western China, while the opposite was true for eastern China – though the magnitude was much smaller. Over the past two decades, the significant evapotranspiration increases in TP translated to a widespread increase in precipitation contribution for TP and downwind beneficiary regions from 2000 to 2020. Our study provides a quantitative way to understand the precipitation regulation services of TP ecosystems through moisture recycling, substantiating their key role to safeguard precipitation and the water cycle for downwind regions– effectively acting as an ecological security shelter that could be perceived by the public.

Geometry, Disorder and Phase Transitions in Topological States of Matter

The quantum Hall effect is the birthplace of topological states of matter, a major theme at the forefront of condensed matter physics in the past two decades. The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect revolutionized our understanding of phases of electronic matter. FQH states support exotic fractionally charged excitations that obey Abelian or non-Abelian fractional statistics, which are topological excitations that result from the underlying topological order. During this project, our group discovered a previously unrecognized geometric degree of freedom of incompressible FQH states and studied that for a variety of gapped FQH states. We brought this new concept into direct contact with experiments for the first time by generalizing it to Fermi-liquid states of composite fermions. Using the newly formulated powerful infinite Density Matrix Renormalization Group method, our numerical calculations yielded a parameter free prediction that was found to be in excellent agreement with experimental findings on electron systems in semiconductor heterostructures. In parallel, we performed extensive numerical studies on different, competing phases at various Landau level filling factors, and quantum phase transitions that result from such a competition, e.g. Abelian-non-Abelian phase transitions in bilayer systems. We studied geometrical excitations dubbed “gravitons” (because of their analogy with excitations in the theory of gravitation) and ways to excite and detect them, and explored how they couple with topological excitations. In graphene-based chiral materials, we realized the ability to tune through different incompressible and compressible states in a single Landau level, and found appropriate experimental parameters for the exploration of universal Luttinger liquid behavior not obtained in semiconductor-based electron systems. We showed that topological systems had a very different response from nontopological systems to strong disorder (many-body localization) as well as periodic drives.

Long-term interactive corrosion between International Simple Glass and stainless steel

The interactive corrosion between stainless steel 316 (SS) and International Simple Glass (ISG) has been studied for 12 months. The samples were placed in intimate contact to create crevice corrosion conditions on SS in a 0.6 M NaCl solution with and without 142 ppm dissolved silica species enriched in 29 Si. Corrosion on SS was observed with large pits located close to the crevice mouth at the end of 1 year in 0.6 M NaCl solution. The SS corrosion was also associated with the dissolution of nearby glass in a highly localized manner. When the leaching solution was saturated with silica species, the corrosion rate of SS was suppressed. However, the presence of SS enhances ISG dissolution in both conditions. The implications of the observed phenomena on the long-term storage of nuclear waste are discussed.

Multiple Magnetorotons and Spectral Sum Rules in Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

We study, numerically, the charge neutral excitations (magnetorotons) in fractional quantum Hall systems, concentrating on the two Jain states near quarter filling, ν = 2/7 and ν = 2/9, and the ν = 1/4 Fermi-liquid state itself. In contrast to the ν = 1/3 states and the Jain states near half filling, on each of the two Jain states ν = 2/7 and ν = 2/9 the graviton spectral densities show two, instead of one, magnetoroton peaks. The magnetorotons have spin 2 and have opposite chiralities in the ν = 2/7 state and the same chirality in the ν = 2/9 state. Here, we also provide a numerical verification of a sum rule relating the guiding center spin s¯ with the spectral densities of the stress tensor.
