Spectroscopic evidence of spin-state excitation in d-electron correlated semiconductor FeSb 2

Iron antimonide (FeSb 2 ) has been investigated for decades due to its puzzling electronic properties. It undergoes the temperature-controlled transition from an insulator to an ill-defined metal, with a cross-over from diamagnetism to paramagnetism. Extensive efforts have been made to uncover the underlying mechanism, but a consensus has yet to be reached. While macroscopic transport and magnetic measurements can be explained by different theoretical proposals, the essential spectroscopic evidence required to distinguish the physical origin is missing. In this paper, through the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and atomic multiplet simulations, we have observed the mixed spin states of 3d 6 configuration in FeSb 2 . Furthermore, we reveal that the enhancement of the conductivity, whether induced by temperature or doping, is characterized by populating the high-spin state from the low-spin state. Our work constitutes vital spectroscopic evidence that the electrical/magnetical transition in FeSb 2 is directly associated with the spin-state excitation.

The breakdown of both strange metal and superconducting states at a pressure-induced quantum critical point in iron-pnictide superconductors

Here we report the first observation of the concurrent breakdown of the strange metal (SM) normal state and superconductivity at a pressure-induced quantum critical point in Ca 10 (Pt 4 As 8 )((Fe 0.97 Pt 0.03 ) 2 As 2 ) 5 superconductor. We find that, upon suppressing the superconducting state, the power exponent (α) changes from 1 to 2, and the slope of the temperature-linear resistivity per FeAs layer (A $\Box$ ) gradually diminishes. At a critical pressure, A $\Box$ and superconducting transition temperature (T c ) go to zero concurrently, where a quantum phase transition from a superconducting state with a SM normal state to a non-superconducting Fermi liquid state occurs. Scaling analysis reveals that the change of A $\Box$ with T c obeys the relation of T c ~ (A $\Box$ ) 0.5 , similar to what is seen in other chemically doped unconventional superconductors. These results suggest that there is a simple but powerful organizational principle of connecting the SM normal state with the high-T c superconductivity.

Photocurrent-driven transient symmetry breaking in the Weyl semimetal TaAs

Symmetry plays a central role in conventional and topological phases of matter, making the ability to optically drive symmetry changes a critical step in developing future technologies that rely on such control. Topological materials, like topological semimetals, are particularly sensitive to a breaking or restoring of time-reversal and crystalline symmetries, which affect both bulk and surface electronic states. While previous studies have focused on controlling symmetry via coupling to the crystal lattice, we demonstrate here an all-electronic mechanism based on photocurrent generation. Using second harmonic generation spectroscopy as a sensitive probe of symmetry changes, we observe an ultrafast breaking of time-reversal and spatial symmetries following femtosecond optical excitation in the prototypical type-I Weyl semimetal TaAs. Here, our results show that optically driven photocurrents can be tailored to explicitly break electronic symmetry in a generic fashion, opening up the possibility of driving phase transitions between symmetry-protected states on ultrafast timescales.

Hund's superconductor Li(Fe,Co)As

We combine transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy to investigate several low-energy manifestations of the Hund's coupling in a canonical FeSC family Li(Fe,Co)As. We determine the doping dependence of the coherent-incoherent crossover temperature and the quasiparticle effective mass enhancement in the normal state. Furthermore, our tunneling spectroscopy result in the superconducting state supports the idea that superconductivity emerging from Hund's metal state displays a universal maximal superconducting gap vs transition temperature (2Δ max /k B T c ) value, which is independent of doping level and T c .
