Comprehensive Analysis of the Relative Dispersion of Droplet-Size Distributions and Their Relationships to Key Physical Fog Processes Under Different Aerosol Conditions and Evolutionary Stages

The relative dispersion of cloud and fog droplets has significant impacts on aerosol indirect effects, radiative transfer, and microphysical processes. However, previous studies have been mostly concerned with clouds, with limited studies on fog, particularly those that examine the combined influences of all key physical processes and their roles during fog evolution. As such, this study aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation by examining the relationships between relative dispersion and other microphysical variables, as well as the underlying microphysical and dynamic processes, based on field fog campaigns in polluted and clean conditions. In polluted fog, droplet concentrations are higher, leading to smaller droplets and increased dispersion. The correlation between dispersion and droplet volume-mean radius is positive in the polluted fog, but shifts to negative in clean fog. Here, we attribute the difference to various microphysical processes like aerosol activation, condensation, collision-coalescence, and entrainment-mixing. In polluted fog, high aerosol concentrations, low supersaturations, and strong turbulence (entrainment-mixing) provide suitable conditions for the simultaneous occurrence of droplet condensation and aerosol activation, resulting in a positive correlation between dispersion and volume-mean radius, especially during the fog formation stage. In contrast, during the mature stage in clean fog, condensation is dominant with weak aerosol activation leading to a negative correlation between relative dispersion and volume-mean radius. The collision-coalescence process is more active in the mature stage, increasing radii and leading to the negative correlation between dispersion and volume-mean radius. This result sheds new light on understanding the relative dispersion and mechanisms in fog under different aerosol backgrounds.

Properties of the QCD matter: review of selected results from the relativistic heavy ion collider beam energy scan (RHIC BES) program

In the paper, we discuss the development of the multigap resistive plate chamber time-of-flight (TOF) technology and the production of the solenoidal tracker at RHIC (STAR) TOF detector in China at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Subsequently, recent experimental results from the first beam energy scan program (BES-I) at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) pertaining to measurements of collectivity, chirality, criticality, global polarization, strangeness, heavy flavor, dilepton and light nuclei productions are reviewed.

Influence of Vertical Hydrologic Exchange Flow, Channel Flow, and Biogeochemical Kinetics on CH 4 Emissions From Rivers

Abstract CH 4 emissions from inland water are highly uncertain in the current global CH 4 budget, especially for rivers and streams due to sparse measurements and the uncertainty of measurements caused by turbulent water flow. A previous study has revealed that vertical hydrologic exchange flow (VHEF) is the main regulator of CH 4 emissions from riverbed sediments. However, to what extent the understanding obtained from the plot‐scale can be extended to the reach scale and basin scale remains unknown. To address this challenge, we developed a process‐based model to estimate CH 4 flux at the air‐water interface using the attributes available in the national hydrography data set. It calculates the annual mean flux of VHEF, CH 4 production in sediments, and CH 4 transport in the river channel in a sequential manner. Model performance is evaluated by CH 4 efflux observed at the Hanford reach of the Columbia River. We show that reach‐wise sediment hydrologic and biogeochemical conditions estimated from the national hydrography data set could serve as a good indicator of CH 4 emissions from rivers. Aerobic methane oxidation and export to the downstream are the dominant ways of total CH 4 loss for the large lowland river. The hotspots of CH 4 emissions are likely to be at the reaches with fine sediments and slow channel velocity. This study demonstrates the possibility of quantifying CH 4 emissions at the reach scale and the modeling framework has the potential to be extended to the basin scale to improve estimates of CH 4 emissions from lotic inland water.

Electronic origin of half-metal to semiconductor transition and colossal magnetoresistance in spinel HgCr 2 Se 4

Half metals are ferromagnets hosting spin-polarized conducting carriers and are crucial for spintronics applications. The chromium spinel HgCr 2 Se 4 represents a unique type of half-metal, which features a half-metal to semiconductor transition (HMST) and exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) across the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic (FM-PM) transition. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find that the Fermi surface of n-type HgCr 2 Se 4 (n–HgCr 2 Se 4 ) consists of a single electron pocket which moves above the Fermi level (E F ) upon the FM-PM transition, leading to the HMST. Such a Lifshitz transition manifests a giant band splitting which originates from the exchange interaction unveiled with a specific chemical nonstoichiometry. The exchange band splitting and the chemical nonstoichiometry are two key ingredients to the HMST and CMR, consistent with our ab initio calculation. Our findings provide spectroscopic evidence of the electronic origin of the anomalous properties of HgCr 2 Se 4 , which address the unique phase transition in half-metals.

High-performance piezoelectric composites via β phase programming

Polymer-ceramic piezoelectric composites, combining high piezoelectricity and mechanical flexibility, have attracted increasing interest in both academia and industry. However, their piezoelectric activity is largely limited by intrinsically low crystallinity and weak spontaneous polarization. Here, we propose a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene anchoring method to manipulate the intermolecular interactions within the all-trans conformation of a polymer matrix. Employing phase-field simulation and molecular dynamics calculations, we show that OH surface terminations on the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets offer hydrogen bonding with the fluoropolymer matrix, leading to dipole alignment and enhanced net spontaneous polarization of the polymer-ceramic composites. We then translated this interfacial bonding strategy into electrospinning to boost the piezoelectric response of samarium doped Pb (Mg1/3Nb 2/3 )O 3 -PbTiO 3 /polyvinylidene fluoride composite nanofibers by 160% via Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets inclusion. With excellent piezoelectric and mechanical attributes, the as-electrospun piezoelectric nanofibers can be easily integrated into the conventional shoe insoles to form a foot sensor network for all-around gait patterns monitoring, walking habits identification and Metatarsalgi prognosis. This work utilizes the interfacial coupling mechanism of intermolecular anchoring as a strategy to develop high-performance piezoelectric composites for wearable electronics.
