Structured illumination for surface-resolved grazing-incidence X-ray scattering

Grazing-incidence (GI) scattering techniques are widely used to characterize thin films, offering high surface sensitivity and insight into morphology and structure. However, these approaches typically provide statistical averaged information due to elongated footprint or limited spatial resolution due to beam size. Here we introduce a method that combines structured illumination with GI X-ray scattering and leverages our computational imaging approach to resolve local structural details. We demonstrate that our method captures local features of an organic semiconductor thin film without the need for sample rotation as in tomography. The method expands GI techniques from statistical averaging to high-resolution imaging, thereby providing the capability for detailed analysis of local material properties, such as domain shape, orientation and polymorphism, which are critical for advancing material design towards more efficient and tailored materials.

Opposing Effects of Impurity Ion Sr 2+ on the Heterogeneous Nucleation and Growth of Barite (BaSO 4 )

Nucleation of barite (BaSO 4 ) has broad implications in geological, environmental, and materials sciences. While impurity metals are common, our understanding of how they impact nucleation remains dim. In this work, we used classical optical microscopy compared to fast X-ray nanotomography (XnT) to investigate heterogeneous nucleation of barite on silica in situ with Sr 2+ as an impurity ion. The observed barite nucleation rates were consistent with classical nucleation theory (CNT), where barite crystals displayed a nonuniform size distribution, exhibiting distinct morphologies and incubation periods in Sr-free solutions. While undetectable with optical microscopy, nanotomography revealed that addition of Sr2+ enhances nucleation rates driven by the pre-factor in CNT, likely because both adsorbed Ba 2+ and Sr 2+ act as precursor sites on which nucleation occurs. Sr 2+ simultaneously inhibits growth, however, leading to a homogeneous distribution of smaller crystals. This finding will enable an improved predictive understanding of nucleation in natural and synthetic environments.

Mechanisms of water oxidation on heterogeneous catalyst surfaces

Water oxidation, an essential step in photosynthesis, has attracted intense research attention. Understanding the reaction pathways at the electrocatalyst/water interface is of great importance for the development of water oxidation catalysts. How the water is oxidized on the electrocatalyst surface by the positive charges is still an open question. This review summarizes current advances in studies on surface chemistry within the context of water oxidation, including the intermediates, reaction mechanisms, and their influences on the reaction kinetics. The Tafel analyses of some electrocatalysts and the rate-laws relative to charge consumption rates are also presented. Moreover, how the multiple charge transfer relies on the intermediate coverage and the accumulated charge numbers is outlined. Finally, the intermediates and rate-determining steps on some water oxidation catalysts are discussed based on density functional theories.
