Doping Bottleneck in Hematite: Multipole Clustering by Small Polarons

We report highly effective doping in transition metal oxides is critical to fundamentally overcome low carrier conductivity due to small polaron formation and reach their ideal efficiency for energy conversion applications. However, the optimal doping concentration in polaronic oxides such as hematite has been extremely low, for example, less than a percent, which hinders the benefits of doping for practical applications. In this work, we investigate the underlying mechanism of low optimal doping concentration with group IV (Ti, Zr, and Hf) and XIV (Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) dopants from first-principles calculations. We find that novel dopant-polaron clustering occurs even at very low dopant concentrations and resembles electric multipoles. These multipoles can be very stable at room temperature and are difficult to fully ionize compared to separate dopants, and thus they are detrimental to carrier concentration improvement. This allows us to uncover mysteries of the doping bottleneck in hematite and provide guidance for optimizing doping and carrier conductivity in polaronic oxides toward highly efficient energy conversion applications.

A Swollenin From Talaromyces leycettanus JCM12802 Enhances Cellulase Hydrolysis Toward Various Substrates

Swollenins exist within some fungal species and are candidate accessory proteins for the biodegradation of cellulosic substrates. Here, we describe the identification of a swollenin gene, Tlswo , in Talaromyces leycettanus JCM12802. Tlswo was successfully expressed in both Trichoderma reesei and Pichia pastoris . Assay results indicate that Tl SWO is capable of releasing reducing sugars from lichenan, barley β-glucan, carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC-Na) and laminarin. The specific activity of Tl SWO toward lichenan, barley β-glucan, carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC-Na) and laminarin is 9.0 ± 0.100, 8.9 ± 0.100, 2.3 ± 0.002 and 0.79 ± 0.002 U/mg, respectively. Additionally, Tl SWO had disruptive activity on Avicel and a synergistic effect with cellobiohydrolases, increasing the activity on pretreated corn stover by up to 72.2%. The functional diversity of Tl SWO broadens its applicability in experimental settings, and indicating that it may be a promising candidate for future industrial applications.

3D‐Printed Structure Boosts the Kinetics and Intrinsic Capacitance of Pseudocapacitive Graphene Aerogels

Abstract The performance of pseudocapacitive electrodes at fast charging rates are typically limited by the slow kinetics of Faradaic reactions and sluggish ion diffusion in the bulk structure. This is particularly problematic for thick electrodes and electrodes highly loaded with active materials. Here, a surface‐functionalized 3D‐printed graphene aerogel (SF‐3D GA) is presented that achieves not only a benchmark areal capacitance of 2195 mF cm −2 at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 but also an ultrahigh intrinsic capacitance of 309.1 µF cm −2 even at a high mass loading of 12.8 mg cm −2 . Importantly, the kinetic analysis reveals that the capacitance of SF‐3D GA electrode is primarily (93.3%) contributed from fast kinetic processes. This is because the 3D‐printed electrode has an open structure that ensures excellent coverage of functional groups on carbon surface and facilitates the ion accessibility of these surface functional groups even at high current densities and large mass loading/electrode thickness. An asymmetric device assembled with SF‐3D GA as anode and 3D‐printed GA decorated with MnO 2 as cathode achieves a remarkable energy density of 0.65 mWh cm −2 at an ultrahigh power density of 164.5 mW cm −2 , outperforming carbon‐based supercapacitors operated at the same power density.
