Oriented nucleation in formamidinium perovskite for photovoltaics

The black phase of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI 3 ) perovskite shows huge promise as an efficient photovoltaic, but it is not favoured energetically at room temperature, meaning that the undesirable yellow phases are always present alongside it during crystallization. This problem has made it difficult to formulate the fast crystallization process of perovskite and develop guidelines governing the formation of black-phase FAPbI 3 . Here, we use in situ monitoring of the perovskite crystallization process to report an oriented nucleation mechanism that can help to avoid the presence of undesirable phases and improve the performance of photovoltaic devices in different film-processing scenarios. The resulting device has a demonstrated power-conversion efficiency of 25.4% (certified 25.0%) and the module, which has an area of 27.83 cm 2 , has achieved an impressive certified aperture efficiency of 21.4%.

Regulating Cation Interactions for Zero–Strain and High–Voltage P2–type Na 2/3 Li 1/6 Co 1/6 Mn 2/3 O 2 Layered Oxide Cathodes of Sodium–Ion Batteries

Deep sodium extraction/insertion of sodium cathodes usually causes undesired Jahn–Teller distortion and phase transition, both of which will reduce structural stability and lead to poor long-cycle reliability. Here we report a zero-strain P2- Na 2/3 Li1/6Co 1/6 Mn 2/3 O 2 cathode, in which the lithium/cobalt substitution contributes to reinforcing the host structure by reducing the Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ redox, mitigating the Jahn–Teller distortion, and minimizing the lattice change. 94.5 % of Na + in the unit structure can be reversibly cycled with a charge cut-off voltage of 4.5 V (vs. Na + /Na). Impressively, a solid-solution reaction without phase transitions is realized upon deep sodium (de)intercalation, which poses a minimal volume deviation of 0.53 %. Finally, it attains a high discharge capacity of 178 mAh g –1 , a high energy density of 534 Wh kg –1 , and excellent capacity retention of 95.8 % at 1 C after 250 cycles.

High-Entropy and Superstructure-Stabilized Layered Oxide Cathodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Layered transition metal oxides are appealing cathodes for sodium-ion batteries due to their overall advantages in energy density and cost. But their stabilities are usually compromised by the complicated phase transition and the oxygen redox, particularly when operating at high voltages, leading to poor structural stability and substantial capacity loss. Here, in this study, an integrated strategy combing the high-entropy design with the superlattice-stabilization to extend the cycle life and enhance the rate capability of layered cathodes is reported. It is shown that the as-prepared high-entropy Na 2/3 Li 1/6 Fe 1/6 Co 1/6 Ni 1/6 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode enables a superlattice structure with Li/transition metal ordering and delivers excellent electrochemical performance that is not affected by the presence of phase transition and oxygen redox. It achieves a high reversible capacity (171.2 mAh g –1 at 0.1 C), a high energy density (531 Wh kg –1 ), extended cycling stability (89.3% capacity retention at 1 C for 90 cycles and 63.7% capacity retention at 5 C after 300 cycles), and excellent fast-charging capability (78 mAh g –1 at 10 C). This strategy would inspire more rational designs that can be leveraged to improve the reliability of layered cathodes for secondary-ion batteries.

Localized Hydrophobicity in Aqueous Zinc Electrolytes Improves Zinc Metal Reversibility

The rechargeability of aqueous zinc metal batteries is plagued by parasitic reactions of the zinc metal anode and detrimental morphologies such as dendritic or dead zinc. To improve the zinc metal reversibility, hereby we report a new solution structure of aqueous electrolyte with hydroxyl-ions scavengers and hydrophobicity localized in solvent clusters. In this work we show that although hydrophobicity sounds counterintuitive for an aqueous system, hydrophilic pockets may be encapsulated inside a hydrophobic outer layer and a hydrophobic anode-electrolyte interface can be generated through the addition of a cation-philic, strongly anion-phobic, and OH - -reactive diluent. The localized hydrophobicity enables less active water and less absorbed water on the Zn anode surface, which suppresses the parasitic water reductions; while the hydroxyl-ion-scavenging functionality further minimizes undesired passivation layer formation, thus leading to superior reversibility (an average Zn plating/stripping efficiency of 99.72% for 1000 cycles) and lifetime (80.6% capacity retention after 5000 cycles) of zinc batteries.

Dual Passivation of Cathode and Anode through Electrode–Electrolyte Interface Engineering Enables Long-Lifespan Li Metal–SPAN Batteries

The reliability and durability of lithium metal (Li 0 )–sulfur batteries are largely limited by the undesired Li 0 plating-stripping irreversibility and the detrimental polysulfide dissolution, yet approaches that can simultaneously address the above anodic and cathodic problems are scarce. In this study, we report the stable operation of a Li 0 -SPAN (sulfurized polyacrylonitrile) battery via an anode–cathode dual-passivation approach. By combination of a fluorinated localized high concentration electrolyte (LHCE) and a Li 3 N-forming additive (TMS-N 3 ), robust and highly conductive electrode passivation layers are formed in situ on the surface of both the Li 0 anode and the SPAN cathode. The resulting highly reversible, dendrite-free, and high-density Li 0 plating morphology enables a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.4%. Advanced tender energy X-ray spectroscopy also reveals the eliminated Li 2 S formation and minimized polysulfide dissolution in SPAN cathodes, leading to a high capacity of 580 mAh/g SPAN and stable cycling with negligible capacity decay (0.7%) for 800 cycles. This electrode–electrolyte interphase engineering strategy has tackled the major limitations of Li–S batteries in both ether- and carbonate-based electrolyte systems and under a wide temperature range from –10 to +50 °C, thus providing insightful guidelines for the rational design of highly durable and high-energy-density Li 0 -S batteries.

Ultrahigh-Rate and Long-Life Zinc–Metal Anodes Enabled by Self-Accelerated Cation Migration

Aqueous zinc ion batteries are receiving unprecedented attention owing to their markedly high safety and sustainability, yet their lifespan particularly at high rates is largely limited by the poor reversibility of zinc (Zn) metal anodes, due to the random ion diffusion and sluggish ion replenishment at reaction interface. In this work, we propose a tunnel-rich and corona-poled ferroelectric thin film coating for Zn metal anode to tackle above conundra. It is demonstrated that the poled ferroelectric coating can better deconcentrate and self-accelerate ion migration at coating/Zn interface upon electroplating process than untreated ferroelectric coating and bare Zn, thus enabling a compact and horizontally-aligned Zn morphology even at ultrahigh rates. Notably, a maximal cumulative plating capacity of over 6500 mAh cm -2 (at 10 mA cm -2 ) is achieved for the surface-modified Zn metal anode, showing extraordinary reversibility of Zn plating/stripping. This work provides new insights in stabilizing Zn metal electrodeposition at the scale of interfacial ion diffusion.
