Site Disorder Drives Cyanide Dynamics and Fast Ion Transport in Li 6 PS 5 CN

Halide argyrodite solid-state electrolytes of the general formula Li 6 PS 5 X exhibit complex static and dynamic disorder that plays a crucial role in ion transport processes. Here, we unravel the rich interplay between site disorder and dynamics in the plastic crystal argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 CN and the impact on ion diffusion processes through a suite of experimental and computational methodologies, including temperature-dependent synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, AC electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, 7 Li solid-state NMR, and machine learning-assisted molecular dynamics simulations. Sulfide and (pseudo)halide site disorder between the two anion sublattices unilaterally improves long-range lithium diffusion irrespective of the (pseudo)halide identity, which demonstrates the importance of site disorder in dictating bulk ionic conductivity in the argyrodite family. Furthermore, we find that anion site disorder modulates the presence and time scales of cyanide rotational dynamics. Ordered configurations of anions enable fast, quasi-free rotations of cyanides that occur on time scales of 10 11 Hz at T = 300 K. In contrast, we find that cyanide dynamics are slow or frozen in Li 6 PS 5 CN when site disorder between the cyanide and sulfide sublattices is present at T = 300 K. We rationalize the observed differences in cyanide dynamics in the context of elastic dipole interactions between neighboring cyanide anions and local strain induced by the configurations of site disorder that may impact the energetic landscape for cyanide rotational dynamics. Through this study, we find that anion disorder plays a decisive role in dictating the extent and time scales of both lithium ion and cyanide dynamics in Li 6 PS 5 CN.

Exploration, Prediction, and Experimental Verification of Structure and Optoelectronic Properties in I 2 -Eu-IV-X 4 (I = Li, Cu, Ag; IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) Chalcogenide Semiconductors

Recently, there has been extensive research into photovoltaic, thermoelectric, and nonlinear optical applications of chalcogenide semiconductors within the large set of defect-resistant I 2 -II-IV-X4 (I = Li, Cu, Ag; II = Ba, Sr, Eu, Pb; IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) compounds. Five Eu-including compounds have previously been reported within this family, but a comparative study of possible structures and electronic properties of all 18 Eu-based combinations is still absent. Herein, we use hybrid density functional theory to study rare-earth-including I 2 -II-IV-X 4 semiconductors with Eu on the II site, in order to further understand this family and test the geometric tolerance factor approach (reported in our previous work) as a tool for predicting potential stable structures. We investigate how the exchange mixing parameter of the HSE06 density functional, α, affects the energetic positions of electronic levels, especially of the localized f-electron orbitals near the band edges of the extended semiconductor structures, using literature photoemission and band gap data of EuS for comparison. Lowest-energy quaternary structure candidates, energy band structures, and densities of states are computationally predicted for all 18 materials. Based on its predicted photovoltaics-relevant band gap, the previously unknown compound Cu 2 EuSnSe 4 was selected and synthesized. Furthermore, the experimental structure, lattice parameters, and band gap of Cu 2 EuSnSe 4 are consistent with the computational predictions, confirming a 1.55 eV band gap.

Selective oxidation and nickel enrichment hinders the repassivation kinetics of multi-principal element alloy surfaces

Robust and sustained corrosion resistance in multi-principal element alloys (MPEA) requires rapid repassivation, i.e. regrowth of the passive layer once it is damaged or destroyed at the surface. In this study, we show that the repassivation of Al 0.1 CrCoFeNi MPEA in 0.6 M NaCl solution is hindered at pH of ~ 2.4 - 6.8 due to the formation of a Ni-enriched subsurface layer as a result of selective oxidation and dissolution of several principal elements, which can be fully restored at pH of ~ 14 from the oxidation of all principal elements. Specifically, surface characterization via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) imaging in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and atom probe tomography (APT), are coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to determine surface composition, oxidation state, and electron work function to uncover the structural origin of the pH-dependent repassivation mechanisms. It was found that selective oxidation of Cr, Co, and Fe in the acidic to neutral solutions altered the surface composition to be significantly enriched in Ni as compared to the bulk. Once the original passive film is destroyed locally by either pitting or tribocorrosion, this altered surface composition exhibited a much poorer repassivation capability due to the increased electron work function and reduced surface reactivity at higher Ni concentration. Finally, these understandings could shed light on the future compositional design of non-equiatomic MPEAs towards sustained repassivation and corrosion resistance over a wide pH range.

Phase Stability, Band Gap Tuning, and Rashba Splitting in Selenium-Alloyed Bournonite: CuPbSb(S 1– x Se x ) 3

Recently, bournonite (CuPbSbS 3 ) has been identified as a potential ferroelectric photovoltaic (PV) material with a 1.3 eV band gap, which falls in an appropriate range for single junction PV devices. Progress in applying bournonite has yielded several studies reporting successful thin-film processing, the most recent of which demonstrated a 2.65% power conversion efficiency for a bournonite-based PV device. In an effort to explore bournonite band gap engineering for PV and other prospective applications (e.g., thermoelectric, spintronic), we here consider the solid-state synthesis of selenium-alloyed bournonite, CuPbSb(S 1-x Se x ) 3 , across the full range of x (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0), and report phase purity for 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5. We characterize the crystal structure and band gap of the samples using X-ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, determining a band gap decrease for single-phase samples from 1.25 eV at x = 0.0 to 1.06 eV at x = 0.5. Formation energies determined using dispersion corrected hybrid density functional theory (DFT) support experimental findings and are consistent with the stability (instability) of the x = 0.5 (x = 1.0) structure relative to starting materials. The computed band structures show a decreasing trend in the band gap with increasing x, again consistent with experiment, with the states at the conduction (valence) band minima (maxima) being principally derived from Pb (S/Se) states. Spin texture analysis and detailed comparison of spin splitting parameters show that Se-alloying modifies the band gap while maintaining Rashba spin splitting character within the electronic structure. Rashba splitting is most pronounced for the conduction band minimum along the Γ-X path in the Brillouin zone. Energy separation between spin states is maintained at ΔE~0.2 eV for the various Se contents, with σz as the spin direction. Furthermore, a smaller spin splitting occurs along Γ-Z (decreasing value with increasing x), with σ x as the spin direction.

Exact constraints and appropriate norms in machine-learned exchange-correlation functionals

Machine learning techniques have received growing attention as an alternative strategy for developing general-purpose density functional approximations, augmenting the historically successful approach of human-designed functionals derived to obey mathematical constraints known for the exact exchange-correlation functional. More recently, efforts have been made to reconcile the two techniques, integrating machine learning and exact-constraint satisfaction. We continue this integrated approach, designing a deep neural network that exploits the exact constraint and appropriate norm philosophy to de-orbitalize the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) functional. The deep neural network is trained to replicate the SCAN functional from only electron density and local derivative information, avoiding the use of the orbital-dependent kinetic energy density. The performance and transferability of the machine-learned functional are demonstrated for molecular and periodic systems.

Electron dynamics in extended systems within real-time time-dependent density-functional theory

Due to a beneficial balance of computational cost and accuracy, real-time time-dependent density-functional theory has emerged as a promising first-principles framework to describe electron real-time dynamics. Here we discuss recent implementations around this approach, in particular in the context of complex, extended systems. Results include an analysis of the computational cost associated with numerical propagation and when using absorbing boundary conditions. Here we extensively explore the shortcomings for describing electron–electron scattering in real time and compare to many-body perturbation theory. Modern improvements of the description of exchange and correlation are reviewed. In this work, we specifically focus on the Qb@ll code, which we have mainly used for these types of simulations over the last years, and we conclude by pointing to further progress needed going forward.

High-performance of CrOx/HZSM-5 catalyst on non-oxidative dehydrogenation of C 2 H 6 to C 2 H 4 : Effect of supporting materials and associated mechanism

Ethane (C 2 H 6 ) is an important inexpensive and widely available fuel resource. High-value use of C 2 H 6 has become increasingly important. Catalytic dehydrogenation of C 2 H 6 to ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) has attracted much attention in recent years due to its high energy efficiency. The direct non-oxidative ethane dehydrogenation (EDH) to ethylene is a promising strategy to produce ethylene and hydrogen at the same time. In this research, Cr/HZSM-5 catalyst with superior stability was synthesized and exhibited an C 2 H 6 converting activity of 1.47 µmol/(g·s) with the corresponding C 2 H 6 conversion and C 2 H 4 selectivity of 37.3% and 90%, respectively. Herein, the synergistic effects of Si and Al in supporting materials were investigated by comparing Cr/HZSM-5 with SBA-15, SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 supported ones, which contains either Al or Si with different structures. Characterization results indicated that the intimate interactions between Cr and support significantly improved the catalytic performance. The presence of Al in the support promoted the formation of more active Cr 6+ species by forming the aluminum-chromium-chromate (Cr-O-Al) structures which were more efficient to active C-H bond and form (Cr, Al)-OH groups during the reaction. Meanwhile, the formation of internal silanol group with the dissociative adsorbed H* could stabilized the active Cr phase to achieve a stable dehydrogenation activity.

A relative radiometric correction method for airborne SWIR hyperspectral image using the side-slither technique

Stripe noise still remains in airborne short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral (HS) images after laboratory calibration due to the stray light of HS imager, nonlinear response of infrared focal plane array, and the distinct difference of equivalent color temperature between the integrating sphere and the sun. It is difficult to get a sun-like radiation source, and we apply the side-slither technique for relative radiometric correction of HS images. The calibration data corresponding to different irradiance were obtained by the side-slither technique of imager. Then, the two-point multi-section method is used for relative radiometric correction of HS images. This paper presents the principle, the experimental results, and the analysis of the proposed method. To validate the effectiveness of this method, it was compared with other methods and evaluated by quantitative quality indices. The results reveal that this method has a good performance in relative radiometric correction of HS image and is superior to the laboratory calibration based on integrating sphere. Consequently, the proposed method can successfully eliminate the adverse effect caused by the difference of equivalent color temperature between radiation sources, and also can improve the accuracy of HS applications such as absolute radiation correction and target recognition.

Annealing-induced microstructural evolution and mechanical anisotropy improvement of the Mg-Gd-Y-Zr alloy processed by hot ring rolling

Highlights: • Growth of SRX grains in GBR is random, while that of TBR is anisotropic. • The new texture component in annealed MR weakens the anisotropy obviously. • T6 treatment leads to an excellent comprehensive mechanical property. - Abstract: Hot ring rolling (HRR) is widely used to fabricate large-size seamless ring-shape components. However, this process produces a severe mechanical anisotropy, which is not acceptable in practical industrial application and should be avoided. This paper reports the annealing-induced microstructural evolution and mechanical anisotropy improvement of HRRed Mg-8.12Gd-1.82Y-0.35Zr alloy ring. Results show that annealing treatment could improve the microstructural homogeneity of the ring owing to the occurrence of static recrystallization (SRX). SRX grains are preferentially formed at twin boundaries and initial grain boundaries due to high dislocation density, high level of stored energy, and stress concentration. Twin boundaries, to some extent, can suppress the migration of SRX grain boundaries. In addition, occurrence of SRX weakens the texture intensity and basal pole inclination, leading to a decrease in the mechanical anisotropy of the ring. Considering the weakened anisotropy, comparable strength, and improved ductility, annealing + aging (T6), compared with direct aging (T5), is a more suitable heat treatment schedule for the HRRed Mg-8.12Gd-1.82Y-0.35Zr alloy ring.

Intravenous Vitamin C attenuates hemorrhagic shock-related renal injury through the induction of SIRT1 in rats

Highlights: • Intravenous vitamin c attenuates HS related renal injury via the Induction of SIRT1. • NF-Kb and HO-1 could be the downstream of SIRT1. • There were no differences in the effects between the high and low dose of Vitamin C. To investigate the effect of intravenous Vitamin C (VC) on hemorrhagic shock (HS)-associated rat renal injury and the involved mechanism. Thirty SD rats were randomly assigned to the sham surgery (sham), hemorrhagic shock (HS), HS+100 mg/kg VC (H + VL), HS+500 mg/kg VC (H + VH) and HS+100 mg/kg VC + EX527 (H + VL + E) groups. Tissue and blood samples were collected 6 h after surgery. Kidney pathological changes were scored. Creatinine (CRE), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) levels in serum and Vitamin C levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and the ability to suppress hydroxyl radical (RAFHR) in plasma were measured. The expression of Sirtuin1 (SIRT1), Acetyl-NF-κB (Ace-NF-κB), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), TNF-α, and IL-1β in tissues was analyzed by ELISA or western-blot. In the HS group, the kidney pathological score and CRE, BUN, TNF-α, and IL-1β levels in serum were significantly higher than in the Sham group (P P P P P P 0.05). Additionally, MDA, TNF-α, IL-1β and Acetyl-NF-κB expression levels were decreased in the kidney (P < 0.05), while SOD, SIRT1 and HO-1 levels were notably enhanced. There were no differences between the H + VL and H + VH groups aside from plasma Vitamin C levels. The effect of Vitamin C was decreased after the addition of EX527, which inhibits SIRT1. Intravenous Vitamin C might attenuate HS-related renal injury via the SIRT1 pathway, and it appears that there were no differences in the effects between the high and low doses.
