Millimeter/Submillimeter Wave Communications Via Ceramic Ribbon

Finding very low loss waveguides in the millimeter/submillimeter wave range has been a problem of considerabel interest for many years. Starting from fundamentals, we have found a new way to design a waveguide structure which is capable of providing an attenuation coefficient of less than 10dB/km for the guided dominant mode.

Power Loss For Multimode Waveguides and its Application to Beam-Waveguide Systems

The conventional way of expressing poer loss in dB/meter for a multimode waveguiding system with finite wall condcutivity (such as a beam-waveguide system with protective shroud) can be incorrect and misleading. The power loss (indB) for a multimode waveguiding system is, in general, not linearly proportional to the length of the waveguide.

Enhanced Pulse Compression in Nonlinear Fiber by a WDM Optical Pulse

A new way to compress an optical pulse in a single-mode fiber is presented in this paper. By the use of the cross phase modulation (CPM) effect caused by the nonlinearity of the optical fiber, a shepherd pulse propagating on a different wavelength beam in a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) single-mode fiber system can be used to enhance the pulse compression of a co-propagating primary pulse.

WDM Component Requirements for Bit-Parallel Fiber Optic Computer Networks

The device specifications for an all optical bit-parallel WDM single fiber link for the cluster computer network community are intended for dissemination to the opto-electronic device research community to stimulate synergy between the two, ultimately leading to early availability of new devices to the computer network researchers.

Experimental Verification of the Pulse Shepherding Concept in Dispersion-Shifted Single-Mode Fiber for Bit-Parallel Wavelength Links

A new way to dynamically control in-flight pulses by a co-propagating shepherd pulse in a wavelength divsion multiplexed (WDM) single-mode fiber system was proposed at the MPPOI '96 Conference. That system functionally resembles an optical fiber ribbon cable, except that all the bits pass on one fiber optic waveguide.

Pulse Shepherding in Nonlinear Fiber Optics

In a wavelength division multiplexed fiber system, where pulses on different wavelength beams may co-propagate in a single mode fiber, the cross-phase-modulation (CPM) effects caused by the nonlinearity of the optical fiber are unavoidable. In other words, pulses on different wavelength beams can interact with and affect each other through the intensity dependence of the refractive index of the fiber. Although CPM will not cause energy to be exchanged among the beams, the pulse shapes and locations on these beams can be altered significantly. This phenomenon makes possible the manipulation and control of pulses co-propagating on different wavelength beams through the introduction of a shepherd pulse at a separate wavelength. How this can be accomplished is demonstrated in this paper.

Thin-ribbon tapered coupler for dielectric waveguides

A recent discovery shows that a high-dielectric constant, low-loss, solid material can be made into a ribbon-like waveguide structure to yield an attenuation constant of less than 0.02 dB/m for single-mode guidance of millimeter/submillimeter waves. One of the crucial components that must be invented in order to guarantee the low-loss utilization of this dielectric-waveguide guiding system is the excitation coupler. The traditional tapered-to-a-point coupler for a dielectric rod waveguide fails when the dielectric constant of the dielectric waveguide is large. This article presents a new way to design a low-loss coupler for a high- or low-dielectric constant dielectric waveguide for millimeter or submillimeter waves.
