Development of the ECLSS Sizing Analysis Tool and ARS Mass Balance Model Using Microsoft Excel

The development of a Microsoft Excel-compatible Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) sizing analysis "tool" for conceptual design of Mars human exploration missions makes it possible for a user to choose a certain technology in the corresponding subsystem. This tool estimates the mass, volume, and power requirements of every technology in a subsystem and the system as a whole. Furthermore, to verify that a design sized by the ECLSS Sizing Tool meets the mission requirements and integrates properly, mass balance models that solve for component throughputs of such ECLSS systems as the Water Recovery System (WRS) and Air Revitalization System (ARS) must be developed. The ARS Mass Balance Model will be discussed in this paper.

Fracture study of windshield glass panes

The major stresses which cause crack propagation in windshield glass panes are induced by bending moments which result from the pressure differentials across the panes. Hence the stress intensity factors for the finite plate with the semi-elliptical surface flaw and edge crack under the bending moments are examined. The results show that the crack growth will be upperbound if it is computed by using the stress intensity factor for the finite plate with the edge crack subjected to pure bending moments. Furthermore, if the ratio of crack depth to plate thickness, a/t, is within 0.3, the stress intensity factor can be conservatively assumed to be constant at the value of a/t equal to zero. A simplified equation to predict the structural life of glass panes is derived based on constant stress intensity factor. The accuracy of structural life is mainly dependent on how close the empirical parameter, m, can be estimated.

Reliability analysis of redundant systems

A method is proposed to compute the transition probability (the probability of partial or total failure) of parallel redundant system. The effect of geometry of the system, the direction of load, and the degree of redundancy on the probability of complete survival of parachute-like system are also studied. The results show that the probability of complete survival of three-member parachute-like system is very sensitive to the variation of horizontal angle of the load. However, it becomes very insignificant as the degree of redundancy increases.

Undergraduate research report

Studies are reported of the probability distribution of yield strength for mild steel, and the application of numerical techniques to solve mechanical vibration problems. Tensile experiments were conducted for 50 cold rolled and 38 hot rolled mild steel rods. Chi-square, Kolmogro-Smirnov and goodness-of-fit methods are used to test the normality or lognormality of the experimental results. As an example of the application of numerical techniques, a nonlinear dash-pot-speing system subjected to seismic excitation is analyzed by using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta integrated method.

The effect of yield strength and ductility to fatigue damage

The cumulative damage of aluminium alloys with different yield strength and various ductility due to seismic loads was studied. The responses of an idealized beam with a centered mass at one end and fixed at the other end to El Centro's and Taft's earthquakes are computed by assuming that the alloys are perfectly elastoplastic materials and by using numerical technique. Consequently, the corresponding residual plastic strain can be obtained from the stress-strain relationship. The revised Palmgren-Miner cumulative damage theorem is utilized to calculate the fatigue damage. The numerical results show that in certain cases, the high ductility materials are more resistant to seismic loads than the high yield strength materials. The results also show that if a structure collapse during the earthquake, the collapse always occurs in the very early stage.
