Single-step synthesis of chemisorption fiber sorbents (CHEFS) for the capture of CO2 and removal of water contaminants

One or more embodiments relates to method for generating CHEFS having the steps of generating the CHEFS from a dope. One or more embodiments relates to a method for generating CHEFS having amine functional groups having the steps of generating a dope containing a BIAS with amine groups, at least one polymer, and at least one solvent; and forming CHEFS from the dope, wherein the generated CHEFS have no more than 30% amine loss compared to the BIAS.

Directly Spun Epoxy-Crosslinked Polyethylenimine Fiber Sorbents for Direct Air Capture and Postcombustion Capture of CO 2

A novel, directly injected solid fiber sorbent is synthesized from a solvent-stable, epoxy-crosslinked basic immobilized amine sorbent (BIAS) for CO 2 capture. Leach resistance of the BIAS organics toward 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone/H 2 O (90/10, fiber solvent) reaches near 100% at the expense of CO 2 capture and is achieved by increasing the extent of crosslinking. The optimized fiber sorbent, prepared with an N,N-diglycidyl-4-glycidyloxyaniline/polyethylenimine (PEI)-0.35/1 wt. ratio, retains 79.2% of PEI and captures 0.37 (direct air capture [DAC]) and 0.67 (postcombustion) mmol CO 2 g-fiber -1 . A nonoptimized prototype hollow fiber exhibits a stable 0.2 mmol CO 2 g-fiber -1 during DAC cycling and is assembled into a ten-fiber module. In conclusion, these results demonstrate a large step toward practical application of this material.

State-of-the-Art Organic- and Inorganic-Based Hollow Fiber Membranes in Liquid and Gas Applications: Looking Back and Beyond

The aggravation of environmental problems such as water scarcity and air pollution has called upon the need for a sustainable solution globally. Membrane technology, owing to its simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, has emerged as one of the favorable technologies for water and air purification. Among all of the membrane configurations, hollow fiber membranes hold promise due to their outstanding packing density and ease of module assembly. Herein, this review systematically outlines the fundamentals of hollow fiber membranes, which comprise the structural analyses and phase inversion mechanism. Furthermore, illustrations of the latest advances in the fabrication of organic, inorganic, and composite hollow fiber membranes are presented. Key findings on the utilization of hollow fiber membranes in microfiltration (MF), nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), pervaporation, gas and vapor separation, membrane distillation, and membrane contactor are also reported. Moreover, the applications in nuclear waste treatment and biomedical fields such as hemodialysis and drug delivery are emphasized. Subsequently, the emerging R&D areas, precisely on green fabrication and modification techniques as well as sustainable materials for hollow fiber membranes, are highlighted. Last but not least, this review offers invigorating perspectives on the future directions for the design of next-generation hollow fiber membranes for various applications. As such, the comprehensive and critical insights gained in this review are anticipated to provide a new research doorway to stimulate the future development and optimization of hollow fiber membranes.

Molecular design and fabrication of PIM-1/polyphosphazene blend membranes with high performance for CO 2 /N 2 separation

New polymeric blend membranes for CO 2 separation were synthesized based on insights from molecular dynamics simulation. A molecular-level structure-property relationship in polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) based blend membranes, was investigated in detail computationally. Calculated local density profiles and energy of interaction of the blend membranes, composed of PIM-1 and various polyphosphazenes, showed that using the polyphosphazene with a higher concentration of ether side chains can improve the compatibility with PIM-1. Furthermore, based on the findings of computational studies, blend membranes were experimentally fabricated from PIM-1 and polyphosphazenes with various polyether side chain concentrations. Polyether concentration in polyphosphazenes was correlated with the film properties and gas transport performance of the blend membranes. Blend membranes showed very high CO 2 permeability (3100-5300 barrer) and improved CO 2 /N 2 selectivity (24-28), outperforming all other PIM-based blend membranes reported to date. Moreover, the CO 2 permeability performance of the blend membranes was tested 566 hours under real post-combustion flue gas from a coal-fired power plant, including CO 2 , N 2 , H 2 O, O 2 , SO x and NO x .
