Integrated rocksalt–polyanion cathodes with excess lithium and stabilized cycling

Co- and Ni-free disordered rocksalt cathodes utilize oxygen redox to increase the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, but it is challenging to achieve good cycle life at high voltages >4.5 V (versus Li/Li + ). Here, in this study, we report a family of Li-excess Mn-rich cathodes that integrates rocksalt- and polyanion-type structures. Following design rules for cation filling and ordering, we demonstrate the bulk incorporation of polyanion groups into the rocksalt lattice. This integration bridges the two primary families of lithium-ion battery cathodes—layered/spinel and phosphate oxides—dramatically enhancing the cycling stability of disordered rocksalt cathodes with 4.8 V upper cut-off voltage. The cathode exhibits high gravimetric energy densities above 1,100 Wh kg -1 and >70% retention over 100 cycles. This study opens up a broad compositional space for developing battery cathodes using earth-abundant elements such as Mn and Fe.

Regulating the Electron Distribution of Metal-Oxygen for Enhanced Oxygen Stability in Li-rich Layered Cathodes

Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides (LLO) hold great promise as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their unique oxygen redox (OR) chemistry, which enables additional capacity. However, the LLOs face challenges related to the instability of their OR process due to the weak transition metal (TM)-oxygen bond, leading to oxygen loss and irreversible phase transition that results in severe capacity and voltage decay. Herein, a synergistic electronic regulation strategy of surface and interior structures to enhance oxygen stability is proposed. In the interior of the materials, the local electrons around TM and O atoms may be delocalized by surrounding Mo atoms, facilitating the formation of stronger TM—O bonds at high voltages. Besides, on the surface, the highly reactive O atoms with lone pairs of electrons are passivated by additional TM atoms, which provides a more stable TM—O framework. Hence, this strategy stabilizes the oxygen and hinders TM migration, which enhances the reversibility in structural evolution, leading to increased capacity and voltage retention. This work presents an efficient approach to enhance the performance of LLOs through surface-to-interior electronic structure modulation, while also contributing to a deeper understanding of their redox reaction.

Sustainable layered cathode with suppressed phase transition for long-life sodium-ion batteries

Sodium-ion batteries are among the most promising alternatives to lithium-based technologies for grid and other energy storage applications due to their cost benefits and sustainable resource supply. For the cathode—the component that largely determines the energy density of a sodium-ion battery cell—one major category of materials is P2-type layered oxides. Unfortunately, at high state-of-charge, such materials tend to undergo a phase transition with a very large volume change and consequent structural degradation during long-term cycling. Here we address this issue by introducing vacancies into the transition metal layer of P2-Na$_{0.7}$Fe$_{0.1}$Mn$_{0.75\square}$$_{0.15}$O2 (‘$_{\square}$’ represents a vacancy). The transition metal vacancy serves to suppress migration of neighbouring Na ions and therefore maintain structural and thermal stability in Na-depleted states. Moreover, the specific Na-O-$_{\square}$ configuration triggers a reversible anionic redox reaction and boosts the energy density. As a result, the cathode design here enables pouch cells with energy densities of 170 Wh kg -1 and 120 Wh kg -1 that can operate for over 600 and 1,000 cycles, respectively. In conclusion, our work not only suggests a feasible strategy for cathode design but also confirms the possibility of developing a battery chemistry that features a reduced need for critical raw materials.

Inhibit the strain accumulation for 5V spinel cathode by mitigating the phase separation during high voltage stage

LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) spinel cathode is a potential cathode material for high-power, low-cost lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its low raw material cost, high operating voltage and efficient lithium-ion transport channel. However, LNMO suffers from structural stability due to the two-phase-transformation during charge/discharge process, leading to poor cycling performance. Here, to address the issues, we have constructed a homogeneous aggregated LNMO cathode with a multifaceted primary particle, namely the LNMO with single-crystal secondary particles (SSP LNMO). Ex situ and in situ characterizations including the synchrotron X-ray diffraction, the neutron diffraction and full pouch cell validated that the SSP LNMO exhibit a single solid-solution reactions with a restrained lattice evolution during the delithiation/lithiation process. This is in contrast to the normal LNMO cathode, which demonstrates a significant two-phase transition from spinel Li 1-x Ni 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 to rock-salt MnO 2 at high voltage. Therefore, the SSP LNMO has greatly improved cycle life compared to the normal LNMO cathode. Overall, this study demonstrates the possibility of constructing LNMO based on primary-grain morphology modulation to improve the intrinsic stability of LIBs.

Implanting Transition Metal into Li 2 O-Based Cathode Prelithiation Agent for High-Energy-Density and Long-Life Li-Ion Batteries

Compensating the irreversible loss of limited active lithium (Li) is essentially important for improving the energy-density and cycle-life of practical Li-ion battery full-cell, especially after employing high-capacity but low initial coulombic efficiency anode candidates. Introducing prelithiation agent can provide additional Li source for such compensation. Herein, we precisely implant trace Co (extracted from transition metal oxide) into the Li site of Li 2 O, obtaining (Li 0.66 Co 0.11$\square$0.23 ) 2 O (CLO) cathode prelithiation agent. Further, the synergistic formation of Li vacancies and Co-derived catalysis efficiently enhance the inherent conductivity and weaken the Li-O interaction of Li 2 O, which facilitates its anionic oxidation to peroxo/superoxo species and gaseous O 2 , achieving 1642.7 mAh/g ~Li2O prelithiation capacity (≈980 mAh/g for prelithiation agent). Coupled 6.5 wt % CLO-based prelithiation agent with LiCoO 2 cathode, substantial additional Li source stored within CLO is efficiently released to compensate the Li consumption on the SiO/C anode, achieving 270 Wh/kg pouch-type full-cell with 92 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles.

Precise Tailoring of Lithium-Ion Transport for Ultralong-Cycling Dendrite-Free All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries can address crucial challenges regarding insufficient battery cycling life and energy density. The demonstration of long-cycling dendrite-free all-solid-state lithium metal batteries requires precise tailoring of lithium-ion transport of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs). Here, in this work, a proof of concept is reported for precise tailoring of lithium-ion transport of a halide SSE, Li 3 InCl 6 , including intragranular (within grains) but also intergranular (between grains) lithium-ion transport. Lithium-ion migration tailoring mechanism in crystals is developed by unexpected enhanced Li, In, and Cl vacancy populations and lower energy barrier for hopping. The lithium-ion transport tailoring mechanism between the grains is determined by the elimination of voids between grains and the formation of unexpected supersonic conducting grain boundaries, boosting the lithium dendrite suppression ability of SSE. Due to boosted lithium-ion conduction and dendrite-suppression ability, the all-solid-state lithium metal batteries coupled with Ni-rich LiNi 0.83 Co 0.12 Mn 0.05 O 2 cathodes and lithium metal anodes demonstrate breakthroughs in electrochemical performance by achieving extremely long cycling life at a high current density of 0.5 C (2000 cycles, 93.7% capacity retention). This concept of precise tailoring of lithium-ion transport provides a cost, time, and energy efficient solution to conquer the remaining challenges in all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries for fast developing electric vehicle markets.
