Single crystal growth and electronic structure of Rh-doped Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7

Ruddlesden-Popper iridate Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 is a spin–orbit coupled Mott insulator. Hole doped Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 provides an ideal platform to study the exotic quantum phenomena that occur near the metal–insulator transition (MIT) region. Rh substitution of Ir is an effective method to induce hole doping into Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 . However, the highest doping level reported in Sr 3 (Ir 1− x Rh x ) 2 O 7 single crystals was only around 3%, which is far from the MIT region. In this paper, we report the successful growth of single crystals of Sr 3 (Ir 1− x Rh x ) 2 O 7 with a doping level of ~ 9%. The samples have been fully characterized, demonstrating the high quality of the single crystals. Transport measurements have been carried out, confirming the tendency of MIT in these samples. The electronic structure has also been examined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. Our results establish a platform to investigate the heavily hole doped Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 compound, which also provide new insights into the MIT with hole doping in this material system.

Domain-wall magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic hexagonal YbFeO 3 films

Electrical modulation of magnetic states in single-phase multiferroic materials, using domain-wall magnetoelectric (ME) coupling, can be enhanced substantially by controlling the population density of the ferroelectric (FE) domain walls during polarization switching. In this work, we investigate the domain-wall ME coupling in multiferroic h-YbFeO 3 thin films, in which the FE domain walls induce clamped antiferromagnetic (AFM) domain walls with reduced magnetization magnitude. Simulation according to the phenomenological theory indicates that the domain-wall ME effect is dramatically enhanced when the separation between the FE domain walls shrinks below the characteristic width of the clamped AFM domain walls during the ferroelectric switching. Experimentally, we show that while the magnetization magnitude remains same for both the positive and the negative saturation polarization states, there is evidence of magnetization reduction at the coercive voltages. These results suggest that the domain-wall ME effect is viable for electrical control of magnetization.

Spontaneous Polarization in an Ultrathin Improper-Ferroelectric/Dielectric Bilayer in a Capacitor Structure at Cryogenic Temperatures

To determine the effect of depolarization and the critical thickness in improper-ferroelectric hexagonal-ferrite thin films, we investigate the polarization switching of a ferroelectric/dielectric bilayer in capacitor structures at 20 K. Experimentally, we show that the spontaneous polarization persists throughout the studied thickness range (3 to 80 unit cell), even with a thick (10-nm) dielectric layer, suggesting no practical thickness limit for applications. By fitting the effect of depolarization using the phenomenological theory, we show that the spontaneous polarization remains finite when the thickness of the ferroelectric layer approaches zero, providing a hint for the absence of critical thickness. We also find that the interfacial effects limit the multidomain formation and govern the polarization switching mechanisms.

Enhanced thermoelectric efficiency in nanocrystalline bismuth telluride nanotubes

We report on the thermal and thermoelectric properties of individual nanocrystalline Bi 2 Te 3 nanotubes synthesized by the solution phase method using 3ω method and a microfabricated testbench. Measurements show that the nanotubes offer improved ZT compared to bulk Bi 2 Te 3 near room temperature due to an enhanced Seebeck coefficient and suppressed thermal conductivity. This improvement in ZT originates from the nanocrystalline nature and low dimensionality of the nanotubes. Domain boundary filtering of low-energy electrons provides an enhanced Seebeck coefficient. The scattering of phonons at the surface of the nanotube leads to suppressed thermal conductivity. These have been theoretically analyzed using the Boltzmann equation based on the relaxation time approximation and Landauer approach. This work clearly demonstrates the possibility of achieving enhancement in thermoelectric efficiency by combining nanocrystalline and low-dimensional systems.

Spin Rectification and Electrically Controlled Spin Transport in Molecular-Ferroelectrics-Based Spin Valves

We report a spin-rectification effect in a spin-valve structure consisting of ferroelectric croconic acid (C 5 H 2 O 5 ) sandwiched between ferromagnetic electrodes La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 and Co, which can be switched between a high-resistance (off ) and a low-resistance (on) state by a poling voltage. In the off state, the magnetoresistance (MR) sign reverses with the measurement voltage with a 0.1-V offset, suggesting a spin-rectification behavior, while in the on state the MR remains negative. These observations can be understood in terms of electrically controlled interfacial energy-band alignment either from the electrostatic effect or from the interfacial redox process. In conclusion, the observed spin-rectification effect suggests thepossibility of diodelike devices for spin-polarized current.
