Thermal Property Modeling and Assessment of the Physical Properties of FLiNaK

Here, the thermodynamic properties of the LiF–NaF–KF system and its subsystems were re-evaluated using the CALPHAD method, focusing on the deviations from ideality in the heat capacity [C p (T)] of mixtures, temperature-dependence of mixing enthalpies (Δ mix H), vapor pressures of mixtures, and enthalpies of fusion (ΔH fus ) using reported values and measurements. The results of this work confirmed a pseudoternary eutectic at 732.9 K and 46.5LiF–11.5NaF–42KF mol % (FLiNaK) with determined Cp(T) = 69.822 + 0.000679T + 2,137,152T –2 J mol –1 K –1 (732.9 < T < 1200 K) and ΔH fus = 18,051 J mol –1 in good agreement to the experimental values. The resulting accurate thermodynamic representation can be used to find relevant excess thermochemical properties in the whole pseudoternary space and provide insights into their composition and temperature dependence. A detailed evaluation of select thermophysical properties was also conducted to determine recommended density, thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, vapor pressures, and boiling point with calculated uncertainties over the temperature range of interest for FLiNaK–salt energy applications.

Applications of Thermochemical Modeling in Molten Salt Reactors

The extensively evaluated and consistent thermodynamic database, the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database—Thermochemical (MSTDB-TC), was used along with additional thermodynamic values from other sources as examples of ways to examine molten salt reactor (MSR) fuel behavior. Relative stability with respect to halide potential and temperature for likely fuel and fission product components were mapped in Ellingham diagrams for the chloride and fluoride systems. The Ellingham diagrams provide a rich, visual means for identifying halide-forming components in proposed fuel/solvent salt systems. Thermochemical models and values from MSTDB-TC and ancillary sources were used in global equilibrium calculations to provide compositions for a close analysis of the behavior of a possible Molten Chloride Salt Fast Reactor and a Molten Salt Reactor Experiment-type system at high burnup (100 GWd/t). The results illustrated the oxidative nature of burnup in MSRs and provided information about redox behavior and possible control.

Thermodynamic assessment of lithium halide reciprocal salt systems for energy applications

Lithium halides are of interest because of their unique applications as fuel or coolants in molten salt reactors (MSRs) and electrolytes in thermally activated batteries. Because iodine is an important fission product for MSRs, the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database-Thermochemical (MSTDB-TC) is being expanded to include relevant iodide reciprocal salt systems. In this work, we assess the thermochemical properties of lithium halide pseudobinary systems based on reported experimental phase diagrams, eutectic temperatures, and enthalpies of mixing. Within the framework of the modified quasi-chemical model in the quadruplet approximation (MQMQA), extrapolations to the related pseudoternary and pseudoquaternary systems have been performed. The pseudoquaternary representations of phase equilibria, enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity are represented in the resultant models. Of interest for generating source terms for accident analysis is the ability to compute the vapor pressures of the dominant iodide species for the systems at any composition. Here, an example of such calculations is provided for the LiF-LiI system at x LiI = 0.01 and x LiI = 0.70, in this case indicating that the LiI vapor species are predominant.

FY21 Status Report on the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database (MSTDB) Development

This report describes the thermodynamic assessments for the ZrF 4 -BeF 2 , AlCl 3 -NaCl, AlCl3-KCl and the PuCl 3 -CsCl pseudo-binary subsystems. Calculation results are compared to the inputs used to optimize the adjustable model parameters. The data came from experimental studies reported in the open literature, from the MSR research community, and/or computational results generated within the NEAMS program and from collaborators. The models from the thermodynamic assessment of these salt systems are integrated into the MSTDB-TC (Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database-Thermochemical). A brief description of the companion MSTDB-TP (Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database-Thermophysical) is given along with an overview of the approach for predicting both thermodynamic and thermophysical property behavior of multicomponent systems.
