ATD-2 Field Evaluation of Pre-Departure Trajectory Option Set Reroutes in North Texas Metroplex

The NASA Airspace Technology Demonstration-2 Phase 3 capabilities extend Integrated Arrival, Departure and Surface scheduling to a Metroplex environment where multiple airports are interacting and sharing resources along the terminal boundary. The Phase 3 coordinated scheduling provides pre-departure reroute recommendations to flight operators which reduce delay caused by terminal restrictions. This paper reports results of the Phase 3 Stormy 2021 Field Evaluation conducted between November 2020 and September 2021 in the North Texas Metroplex. During the field evaluation NASA partnered with the FAA, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Envoy Airlines to evaluate Phase 3 capabilities in an operational environment. The benefits results are provided as delay savings metrics measured in time and converted to fuel and emissions savings using detailed fuel flow models provided by flight operators.

Predicting Arrival and Departure Runway Assignments with Machine Learning

Runway assignments at major airports are made by air traffic controllers subject to various constraints, and to achieve various objectives. In this research, we describe our efforts training machine learning (ML) models to predict both departure and arrival runway assignments using an entirely data-driven approach. This approach is compared to existing rule-based approaches developed in previous research using input from Subject Matter Experts. The models have features derived from various FAA data feeds, and leverage multiple machine learning algorithms. Results for models trained for nine major U.S. airports are described and compared to one another across various important dimensions. Particular attention was paid to developing a repeatable framework for training these models so the approach could be scaled to other airports, and to developing models that are useful in a real-time environment. In addition, the models were designed to be functional in a real-time environment to support NASA’s ATD-2 project, as part of an ML-powered shadow system to compare against the performance of the fielded system.

ATD-2 Phase 3 Scheduling in a Metroplex Environment Incorporating Trajectory Option Sets

The NASA Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 Phase 1 and 2 Field Evaluations have successfully demonstrated new technologies developed to manage the Integrated Arrival, Departure, and Surface traffic flows at a single airport. The Phase 3 Field Evaluation extends the capabilities to a Metroplex environment where multiple airports are interacting and sharing resources along the terminal boundary. This paper describes the scheduling algorithm enabling the coordinated scheduling and describes the interaction between airports within the Metroplex and the terminal boundary. We describe the metrics developed to inform flight operators about reroute opportunities and discuss the potential benefits to the rerouted flight and the system-wide aggregate benefits of a single reroute. We believe that the capabilities developed and the lessons learned during the Phase 3 Field Evaluation will set up the National Airspace System for future success.

Performance Evaluation of SARDA: An Individual Aircraft-Based Advisory Concept for Surface Management

Surface operations at airports in the US are based on tactical operations, where departure aircraft primarily queue up and wait at the departure runways. NASAs Spot And Runway Departure Advisor (SARDA) tool was developed to address these inefficiencies through Air Traffic Control Tower advisories. The SARDA system is being updated to include collaborative gate hold, either tactically or strategically. This paper presents the results of the human-in-the-loop evaluation of the tactical gate hold version of SARDA in a 360 degree simulated tower setting. The simulations were conducted for the east side of the Dallas-Fort Worth airport. The new system provides gate hold, ground controller and local controller advisories based on a single scheduler. Simulations were conducted with SARDA on and off, the off case reflecting current day operations with no gate hold. Scenarios based on medium (1.2x current levels) and heavy (1.5x current levels) traffic were explored. Data collected from the simulation was analyzed for runway usage, delay for departures and arrivals, and fuel consumption. Further, Traffic Management Initiatives were introduced for a subset of the aircraft. Results indicated that runway usage did not change with the use of SARDA, i.e., there was no loss in runway throughput as compared to baseline. Taxiing delay was significantly reduced with the use of advisory by 45 in medium scenarios and 60 in heavy. Arrival delay was unaffected by the use of advisory. Total fuel consumption was also reduced by 23 in medium traffic and 33 in heavy. TMI compliance appeared unaffected by the advisory.

Impact of General Aviation Operations on Airport Performance Through Fast-Time Simulations at Charlotte Douglas International Airport

NASA, in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration and commercial airlines, deployed the Integrated Arrival, Departure, and Surface (IADS) traffic management system at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in 2017 for field evaluation. The system features new capabilities of data exchange and integration, collaborative surface metering and scheduling, which has demonstrated operational benefits of reducing delay time and fuel consumption. General Aviation flights, however, are not currently included in the surface metering programs because of their different operational procedures and lack of reliable predictability in departure time. Thus, their impact on the system performance is not well understood. This paper presents a study of the impact of General Aviation traffic at CLT using fast-time simulations.

Shadow Evaluation of the ATD-2 Phase 3Trajectory Option Set Reroute Capability in the North Texas Metroplex

This paper presents results of NASA’s Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 Phase 3 Trajectory Option Set reroute capability designed to resolve a demand capacity imbalance along the terminal airspace boundary. We focus on Candidate flights generated during the Stormy 2020 Shadow Evaluation which was the result of using the system to passively collect predictions for each flight at the OUT event. Benefit metrics associated with the predictions are defined for the individual rerouted flight and also the system-wide savings. Candidate flights are grouped into three distinct use cases and the benefit mechanism is explained for each use case along with illustrative data. Analysis of the different use cases shed light on the underlying causes of the reroute opportunities. Lessons learned from the Stormy 2020 Shadow Evaluation including the importance of reroutes during recovery from Severe Weather Avoidance Programs and also reroutes in the absence of terminal airspace constraints will be incorporated into the Phase 3 Field Evaluation in 2021 to maximize reroute opportunities.
