Mechanochromic Palettes Based on Optical Rotation in Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomers for Visual Signalling

Mechanochromic photonic materials present promising prospects for enhancing diverse facets of human life. Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) present immediate mechanochromic properties, allowing their utility in various fields, including camouflages, textiles, and anticounterfeiting. Nonetheless, it is essential to provide differentiated color information corresponding to diverse types and degrees of deformation for practical use in real life. Herein, the mechanochromic responses of CLCEs are investigated using their optical rotation under compression and uniaxial stretching. The CLCEs exhibit the same reflection colors indistinguishable for compression and uniaxial stretching due to their contracted pitches. In contrast, the linearly polarized light passing through deformed CLCEs can be modulated by optical rotation, resulting in distinct transmission colors that can be discerned through mechanical deformations. A visual signaling system with color information derived from optical rotation is demonstrated. By comprehending and manipulating the mechanoresponsive behavior of CLCEs, these materials can be advanced into innovative solutions with enhanced functionality and performance, thereby broadening their applications for human life enhancement.

Terahertz-polarizing effect based on geometric anisotropy of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have garnered considerable attention due to their unique properties, such as thinness and excellent electronic properties. The inherent anisotropy of 2D nanomaterials, which is characterized by their high aspect ratio, can maximize the directional functionality to enhance the conductivity and utilization of edges. Here, we demonstrate how to utilize the edges of titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) MXene nanosheet to control the linear polarization in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. By a simple and unique vertical alignment exploiting the high surface charge and excellent colloidal dispersibility of MXene nanosheets, MXene nanosheets are vertically oriented along an applied AC electric field. The well-aligned edges justify the THz polarizing effect, revealing outstanding performances such as the broadband coverage in 0.2–1.5 THz and an exceptional extinction ratio reaching 20 dB. Furthermore, we vary the local orientation of the vertical MXene nanosheets by tailoring the applied electric field, enabling spatially controllable polarization capabilities. Our results can provide a generic tool for the utilization of 2D nanomaterials in diverse potential applications in optics and electronics.

On-Demand Aligned DNA Hydrogel Via Light Scanning

DNA is an anisotropic, water-attracting, and biocompatible material, an ideal building block for hydrogel. The alignment of the anisotropic DNA chains is essential to maximize hydrogel properties, which has been little explored. Here, we present a method to fabricate the anisotropic DNA hydrogel that allows precise control for the polymerization process of photoreactive cationic monomers. Scanning ultraviolet light enables the uniaxial alignment of DNA chains through the polymerization-induced diffusive mass flow using a concentration gradient. In conclusion, while studying anisotropic mechanical properties and orientation recovery according to the DNA chain alignment direction, we demonstrate the potential of directionally controlled DNA hydrogels as smart materials.

Fabrication of Arrays of Topological Solitons in Patterned Chiral Liquid Crystals for Real-Time Observation of Morphogenesis

Topological solitons have knotted continuous field configurations embedded in a uniform background, and occur in cosmology, biology, and electromagnetism. However, real-time observation of their morphogenesis and dynamics is still challenging because their size and timescale are enormously large or tiny. Liquid crystal (LC) structures are promising candidates for a model-system to study the morphogenesis of topological solitons, enabling direct visualization due to the proper size and timescale. We report a new way is found to rationalize the real-time observation of the generation and transformation of topological solitons using cholesteric LCs confined in patterned substrates. The experimental demonstration shows the topologically protected structures arise via the transformation of topological defects. Numerical modeling based on minimization of free energy closely reconstructs the experimental findings. The fundamental insights obtained from the direct observations pose new theoretical challenges in understanding the morphogenesis of different types of topological solitons within a broad range of scales.
