Attaching Metal Fasteners to Silica Tiles

Stress distributed so high load borne. Fastener bonded in densified hole or captured in plug of similar refractory material, which in turn bonded in hole in parent tile. Plug or bonding distributes mechanical load from fastener to broad region surrounding fastener, reducing local stress concentration and likelihood of breakage. Bonded-plug method has been successful in attaching mechanical fasteners to porous silica refractory tiles used on outer surface of Space Shuttle orbiter.

Fitting Flexible Coverings to Contoured Surfaces

Method using two transparent plastic sheets and polyethylene foam spacer produces flat templates from contoured surfaces. Once prepared, templates laid flat, and insulation inserted between two templates cut to shape to fit contoured surface. Sections of insulation prepared by contour-transferring technique fit contoured surfaces precisely. Procedure used for tailoring protective covers or for installation of vibrationabsorbing material over contoured surfaces.

Safe bending of boron/aluminum sheets

Low cost procedure utilizing aluminum backing sheets protects boron/aluminum sheet from cracking during bending. Process utilizes inexpensive universal-brake bending dies rather than special hydroforming dies.

A new vibration dampening adhesive

Formulation of polymers has been devised that, when vibrated, adhesive becomes more fluid (thixotropic) to better absorb shock and, when warmed, will actually hold its shape better (thermosetting) rather than deform.

Flame-resistant thin panels of glass fabric-polyimide resin laminates

With a cured polyimide resin content of less than about 20 percent by weight of the finished part, glass fabric laminates which have good structural properties and are self-extinguishing in a pure oxygen atmosphere can be prepared in the thickness range of 0.035 to 0.08 inch.
