Measurements of fusion reaction history in inertially confined burning plasmas

Direct evidence of inertially confined fusion ignition appears in the abrupt temperature increase and consequent rapid increase in the thermonuclear burn rate as seen in the reaction history. The Gamma Reaction History (GRH) and Gas Cherenkov Detector (GCD) diagnostics are γ-based Cherenkov detectors that provide high quality measurements of deuterium–tritium fusion γ ray production and are, thus, capable of monitoring the thermonuclear burn rate. Temporal shifts in both peak burn time and burn width have been observed during recent high-yield shots (yields greater than 1017 neutrons) and are essential diagnostic signatures of the ignition process. While the current GRH and GCD detectors are fast enough to sense the changes of reaction history due to alpha heating, they do not have enough dynamic range to capture the onset of alpha heating. The next generation of instrumentation, GRH-15m, is proposed to increase the yield-rate coverage to measure the onset of alpha-heating.

First spectral measurement of deuterium-tritium fusion γ rays in inertial fusion experiments

Here, the R-matrix analysis of A = 5 nuclear systems has been partially validated by applying the technique to the 5 Li system and comparing the predicted γ-ray spectrum with historical data. R-matrix analysis of the similar 5 He system was then used to predict the γ-ray spectral shape for the deuterium-tritium (DT) reaction. The resulting spectra have been used in the analysis of DT implosions on the Omega laser where the γ-ray interaction rate was measured by a gas Cherenkov detector. Comparison of predictions to experiment confirmed the presence of both 16.75 and ≈ 13 MeV γ-ray contributions; analysis, using R-matrix spectra, yielded a ratio of γ-ray emission from a transition to the intermediate excited state to that from a transition to the ground state of (2.1 ± 0.4):1, substantiating the first spectral measurement of the DT fusion γ ray in an inertial fusion environment.

Solid Cherenkov detector for studying nucleosynthesis in inertial confinement fusion

Measuring gamma rays emitted from nuclear reactions gives insight into their nuclear structure. Notably, there are several nuclear reactions that produce gamma rays at ~1 MeV–3 MeV energies such as T( 4 He, γ) 7 Li, 4 He( 3 He, γ) 7 Be, and 12 C(p, γ) 13 N, which may solve questions lingering about big-bang nucleosynthesis and stellar nucleosynthesis. To observe 1 MeV–3 MeV gamma rays in an inertial confinement fusion system, a new style of the Cherenkov detector was developed using aerogel and fused silica as a Cherenkov medium. Utilizing the OMEGA laser facility, both aerogel and fused silica media were compared with the existing gas-medium Cherenkov detector to validate the concept. Furthermore, gamma ray measurements from high yield inertial confinement fusion implosions (deuterium–tritium and deuterium– 3 He) demonstrated that aerogel and fused silica were viable Cherenkov media, paving the way for a potential optimized detector to make these cross section measurements on OMEGA or the National Ignition Facility.
