Semiconducting pnictides with a ThCr 2 Si 2 type structure were realized via mixing Cu and group 13 elements (Al, Ga, and In) in the metal site.
The type I clathrate, Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 , is reinvestigated and found to have a low-temperature polymorph mP 108-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 with ordered Cu and As sites. In situ temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction experiments guided synthetic efforts toward the synthesis of the ordered monoclinic ( mP 108) and disordered cubic ( cP 54) polymorphs with high phase purity. While a transition from mP 108-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 to cP 54-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 is not directly observed, cP 54-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 is stabilized through quenching from high temperatures and is confirmed through high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. Further, combined theoretical predictions and experimental observations of the thermoelectric properties of both polymorphs reveal that the ordering of Cu and As atoms in the clathrate framework simultaneously enhances the Seebeck coefficient and electronic conductivity by increasing the hole effective mass and reducing the electronic scattering events. Consequently, the zT of mP 108-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 reaches a maximum of 0.2 at 575 K, an order of magnitude higher than that of cP 54-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 .
The low-temperature modification of β-Ag 2 Se has proven to be useful as a near-room-temperature thermoelectric material. Over the past years, research has been devoted to interstitial, vacancy, and substitutional doping into the parent β-Ag 2 Se structure, aiming at tuning the material’s charge and heat transport properties to enhance thermoelectric performance. The transformation of β-Ag 2 Se into α-Ag 2 Se at ~134 °C and the low solubility of dopants are the main obstacles for the doping approach. Herein, we report a facile, safe, scalable, and cost-effective benchtop approach to successfully produce metal-doped β-Ag 2 Se. The doped materials display a remarkable enhancement of thermoelectric performance with a record-high peak zT of 1.30 at 120 °C and an average zT of ~1.15 in the 25–120 °C range for 0.2 at. % Zn-doped Ag 2 Se. The enhancement in zT is attributed to point defects created by Zn doping into Ag vacancies/interstitials, which enhances the scattering of phonons and tunes the charge carrier properties, leading to the significant suppression of thermal conductivity. In conclusion, the simplicity of the synthetic method developed herein and the high performance of the final products provide an avenue to produce high-quality Ag 2 Se-based thermoelectric materials.
[Fe(en)(tren)][FeSe 2 ] 2 (en = ethylenediamine, C 2 H 8 N 2 , tren = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, C 6 H 18 N 4 ) has been synthesized by a mixed-ligand solvothermal method. Its crystal structure contains heteroleptic [Fe(en)(tren)] 2+ complexes with distorted octahedral coordination, incorporated between 1D-FeSe 2 chains composed of edge–sharing FeSe 4 tetrahedra. The twisted octahedral coordination environment of the Fe–amine complex leads to partial dimerization of Fe–Fe distances in the FeSe 2 chains so that the FeSe 4 polyhedra deviate strongly from the regular tetrahedral geometry. 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy reveals oxidation states of +3 for the Fe chain atoms and +2 for the Fe complex atoms. The close proximity of Fe atoms in the chains promotes ferromagnetic nearest neighbor interactions, as indicated by a positive Weiss constant, θ = +53.8(6) K, derived from the Curie–Weiss fitting. Magnetometry and heat capacity reveal two consecutive magnetic transitions below 10 K. DFT calculations suggest that the ordering observed at 4 K is due to antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions in the 1D-FeSe 2 chains. The combination of two different ligands creates an asymmetric coordination environment that induces changes in the structure of the Fe–Se fragments. Finally, this synthetic strategy opens new ways to explore the effects of ligand field strength on the structure of both Fe-amine complexes and surrounding Fe–Se chains.
Non-centrosymmetric semiconductors may exhibit non-linear optical (NLO) properties.
The inertness of elemental selenium is a significant obstacle in the synthesis of selenium-containing materials at low reaction temperatures. Over the years, several recipes have been developed to overcome this hurdle; however, most of the methods are associated with the use of highly toxic, expensive, and environmentally harmful reagents. As such, there is an increasing demand for the design of cheap, stable, and nontoxic reactive selenium precursors usable in the low-temperature synthesis of transition metal selenides with vast applications in nanotechnology, thermoelectrics, and superconductors. Herein, a novel synthetic route has been developed for activating elemental selenium by using a solvothermal approach. By comprehensive 77 Se NMR, Raman, and infrared spectroscopies and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, we show that the activated Se solution contained HSe – , [Se–Se] 2– , and Se 2– ions, as well as dialkyl selenide (R 2 Se) and dialkyl diselenide (R–Se–Se–R) species in dynamic equilibrium. This also corresponded to the first observation of naked Se 2 2– in solution. The versatility of the developed Se precursor was demonstrated by the successful synthesis of (i) the polycrystalline room-temperature modification of the β-Ag 2 Se thermoelectric material; (ii) large single crystals of superconducting β-FeSe; (iii) CdSe nanocrystals with different particle sizes (3–10 nm); (iv) nanosheets of PtSe 2 ; and (v) mono- and dibenzyl selenides and diselenides at room temperature. In conclusion, The simplicity and diversity of the developed Se activation method holds promise for applied and fundamental research.
Here, a series of Yb-substituted Zintl phases in the Ca 3–x Yb x AlSb 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.81(1)) system has been synthesized by initial arc melting and post-heat treatment, and their isotypic crystal structures were characterized by both powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All four title compounds adopted the Ca 3 AlAs 3 -type structure (space group Pnma, Pearson code oP28, Z = 4). The overall structure can be described as a combination of the 1-dimensional (1D) infinite chain of ∞ 1 [Al(Sb 2 Sb 2/2 )] formed by two vertices sharing [AlSb 4 ] tetrahedral moieties and three Ca 2+ /Yb 2+ mixed sites located in between these 1D chains. The charge balance and the resultant independency of the 1D chains in the title system were explained by the Zintl-Klemm formalism [Ca 2+ /Yb 2+ ] 3 [(4b-Al 1– )(1b-Sb 2– ) 2 (2b-Sb 1– ) 2/2 ]. A series of DFT calculations proved that (1) the band overlap between the d-orbital states from two types of cations and the p-orbital states from Sb at the high symmetry Γ point implied a heavily doped degenerate semiconducting behavior of the quaternary Ca 2 YbAlSb 3 model and (2) the site preference of Yb for the M1 site was due to the electronic-factor criterion based on the Q values of each atomic site. The electron localization function calculations also proved that the two different shapes of lone pairs of the Sb atoms—the “umbrella-shape” and the “C-shape”—are determined by local geometry and the coordination environment on the anionic frameworks. Thermoelectric measurements of the quaternary title compound Ca 2.19(1) Yb 0.81 AlSb 3 showed an approximately two times larger ZT value than that of ternary Ca 3 AlSb 3 at 623 K due to increased electrical conductivity and ultralow thermal conductivity originated from Yb substitution for Ca.
Five novel Zintl phase solid solutions in the Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.13(1); 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.32(2)) system were successfully synthesized by the molten Pb metal-flux method, and the powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses proved that all five title compounds adopted the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase having the orthorhombic Pnma space group (Z = 4, Pearson code oP20) with five crystallographically independent atomic sites. The previously studied BaCu 2 S 2 -type antimonides demonstrated a limited tolerance for doping in contrast to the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type antimonides. To understand the relatively narrower phase width and limited dopability of the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase than the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase in the overall Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system, the radius ratio of cations and anionic elements r + /r – for two structure types were thoroughly investigated. For the first time, the r + /r – ratio was identified as a critical factor for the phase selectivity: (1) r + /r – > 1 favored the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase, and (2) r + /r – < 1 favored the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase. Further, we also revealed the structural transformation mechanism from the more widely observed CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase to the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase as the relatively larger cationic elements were introduced to the system. A series of DFT calculations using the three hypothetical models indicated that a resonance peak near EF in the density of states curves was descended from the relatively flat band structure at several special symmetry points rationalizing the enhanced Seebeck coefficients of Ba 0.94(1) Sr 0.06 Zn 1.86(3) Cd 0.14 Sb 2 and Ba 0.96(1) Sr 0.04 Zn 1.68(2) Cd 0.32 Sb 2 . Electron localization function analysis rationalized the correlation between the polarity change of anionic Zn/Cd–Sb bonds and the charge carrier mobility on the anionic frameworks. Temperature-dependent thermoelectric properties were studied for the four title compounds, and the results proved that the Sr and Cd doping in the title Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system successfully enhanced the ZT values through the increased Seebeck coefficients and the reduced total thermal conductivities.
The zinc–antimony phase space has been heavily investigated due to the structural complexity and abundance of high-performing thermoelectric materials. Consequentially, the desire to use zinc and antimony as framework elements to encage rattling cations and achieve phonon-glass-electron-crystal-type properties has remained an enticing goal with only two alkali metal clathrates to date, Cs 8 Zn 18 Sb 28 and K 58 Zn 122 Sb 207 . Guided by Zintl electron-counting predictions, here we explored the Ba–Zn–Pn (Pn = As, Sb) phase space proximal to the expected composition of the type-I clathrate. In situ powder X-ray diffraction studies revealed two “hidden” compounds which can only be synthesized in a narrow temperature range. The ex situ synthesis and crystal growth unveiled that instead of type-I clathrates, compositionally close but structurally different new clathrate-like compounds formed, Ba 2 Zn 5 As 6 and Ba 2 Zn 5 Sb 6 . These materials crystallize in a unique structure, in the orthorhombic space group Pmna with the Wyckoff sequence i 2 h 6 gfe. Single-phase synthesis enabled the exploration of their transport properties. Rattling of the Ba cations in oversized cages manifested low thermal conductivity, which, coupled with the high Seebeck coefficients observed, are prerequisites for a promising thermoelectric material. Potential for further optimization of the thermoelectric performance by aliovalent doping was computationally analyzed.
The synthesis, formation mechanism, crystal structure, and transport properties of the bismuth chalcohalide Bi 13 S 17 Br 3 are reported.
A series of Eu-doped Zintl compounds belonging to theCa 5-x-y Yb x Eu y Al 2 Sb 6 (x = 0, 1.12; 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.63(2)) system have been successfully synthesized by both the arc-melting and the molten Pb-flux methods. All of the five title compounds initially crystallized in the Ca 5 Ga 2 As 6 -type phase (space group Pbam, Z = 2, Pearson code oP26) and maintained their original structure even after the post-heat treatment, unlike the recently reported n-type Zintl analogues in the Ca 5-x-y Yb x RE y Al 2 Sb 6 (RE = Pr, Nd, Sm) systems, which underwent a phase transition from the Ca 5 Ga 2 As 6 -type to the Ca 5 Al 2 Bi 6 -type phase after annealing. This research aimed to understand the origin of the structural preference of the title Ca 5-x-y Yb x Eu y Al 2 Sb 6 system, whether it was affected by the valence electron count or the cationic size. Electrical transport property measurements showed an increase in electrical conductivities and a decrease of Seebeck coefficients for Ca 4.89(1) Eu 0.11 Al 2 Sb 6 , Ca 4.82(1) Eu 0.18 Al 2 Sb 6 , and Ca 4.62(1) Eu 0.38 Al 2 Sb 6 , compared to the parental compound Ca 5 Al 2 Sb 6 . Hole effect measurements proved that these changes should be attributed to the reduced carrier concentration and enhanced carrier mobility. The comprehensive density functional theory calculations including electron density map analysis for the hypothetical model Ca 4.5 Eu 0.5 Al 2 Sb 6 revealed that the polarity between Al and Sb forming the anionic frameworks decreased as the Eu-dopants were introduced, which eventually affected the carrier mobility in the anionic frameworks. Thermal conductivity measurements proved that the Eu-doping successfully lowered the lattice thermal conductivity because of the enhanced atomic disordering. In conclusion, the magnetization measurements for Ca 4.37(2) Eu 0.63 Al 2 Sb 6 showed a typical Curie–Weiss behavior with weak antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions with θ p = -5.07 K.
Alkali pnictogen dichalcogenides–I–V–VI 2 or APnCh 2 –have been identified as promising semiconducting materials for energy conversion devices. However, the controlled nanoscale synthesis and our understanding of the effects of cation ordering and stereochemically active lone pairs on the structures of these ternary compounds remain underdeveloped. Here, we use solution-phase chemistry to synthesize a family of APnCh 2 materials, including LiSbSe 2 , NaSbS 2 , NaSbSe 2 , NaBiS 2 , and NaBiSe 2 . Our approach utilizes alkali metal hydrides (AH) or carboxylates, A(O 2 CR), PnPh 3 , and elemental chalcogens as synthetic precursors and oleylamine or 1-octadecene as solvents. Synthetic manipulation via fine-tuning of reaction temperature enables control over the degree of ordering caused by the Sb 5s 2 lone pair-induced distortions in NaSbS 2 . Pair distribution function analysis demonstrates that the structure of the Sb-containing phases deviates much more from a disordered rock salt structure than that of the Bi-containing phases. This local distortion, induced by the Sb lone pair, leads to a previously unreported noncentrosymmetric NaSbS 2 crystal structure, which is additionally supported by second-harmonic generation measurements. Infrared and multinuclear solid-state NMR spectroscopies show that oleylamine or chelating carboxylates and, in some cases, unreacted precursors (LiH and PnPh 3 ) remain bound to the nanocrystalline surfaces. Further, a deeper understanding of the local atomic environment, long-range ordering, surface chemistry, and optoelectronic properties of these materials may speed up their fundamental study and application.
Silicon phosphides with a new structure have been synthesized. These salt inclusion materials contain exotic polycations such as [Ba 6 Cl] 11+ . The structure and properties are investigated.
A novel mixed-valent hybrid chiral and polar compound, Fe 7 As 3 Se 12 (en) 6 (H 2 O), has been synthesized by a single-step solvothermal method. The crystal structure consists of 1D [Fe 5 Se 9 ] chains connected via [As 3 Se 2 ]–Se pentagonal linkers and charge-balancing interstitial [Fe(en) 3 ] 2+ complexes (en = ethylenediamine). Neutron powder diffraction verified that interstitial water molecules participate in the crystal packing. Magnetic polarizability of the produced compound was confirmed by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy showed the presence of mixed-valent Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ in the Fe–Se chains. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal strong antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor interactions within the chains with no apparent magnetic ordering down to 2 K. Hidden short-range magnetic ordering below 70 K was found by 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, showing that a fraction of the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ in the chains are magnetically ordered. Nevertheless, complete magnetic ordering is not achieved even at 6 K. Analysis of XAS spectra demonstrates that the fraction of Fe 3+ in the chain increases with decreasing temperature. Computational analysis points out several competing ferrimagnetic ordered models within a single chain. Here, this competition, together with variation in the Fe oxidation state and additional weak intrachain interactions, is hypothesized to prevent long-range magnetic ordering.
Two type-I clathrates were synthesized by introducing Ga into the framework of the Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 type-I clathrate. The introduction of minute amounts of Ga, 1.9% Ga/M total (where M total = Cu + Ga), resulted in the disturbance of the completely ordered Pbcn superstructure of Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 . Ba 8 Cu 15.43(2) Ga 0.3 P 30.26(3) crystallizes in a partially ordered orthorhombic Pmna clathrate-I superstructure with five out of 15 framework sites being jointly occupied by metal+phosphorus. Increasing the Ga content resulted in all framework sites being occupied by metal + phosphorus in the archetype cubic Pm n clathrate-I crystal structure of Ba 8 Cu 14.5(3) Ga 1.3 P 30.2(4) with 8.2% Ga/M total . A combination of energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, and single crystal x-ray diffraction was used to determine the structures alongside the compositions. The positional disorder was verified by 31 P solid state NMR spectroscopy. Characterization of the transport properties indicated that the Ga-substituted samples exhibit higher Seebeck coefficients and electrical resistivities compared to its pristine counterpart, in line with the expected reduction of the hole concentration due to Ga/Cu substitution. Moderate improvements in the thermoelectric power factor and overall figure-of-merit were observed for samples with 6.9% and 3.8% Ga/M total as compared to those for the pristine Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 clathrate. Finally, band structure calculations shed light on how Ga substitution affects the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of studied clathrates.
