Microcomputer-based programmable optical signal processor

A microcomputer-based real-time programmable optical signal processing system utilizing a magneto-optic spatial light modulator (MOSLM) and a liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) is described. This system can perform a myriad of complicated optical operations, such as image correlation, image subtraction, and matrix multiplication. Its important asserts are its programmability and the capability of real-time addressing. These are important for telerobotic vision in space automation applications. Design specifications and suggestions for practical implementation of the system are discussed. Some preliminary experimental demonstrations are conducted to demonstrate applications of the proposed system to image correlation for optical pattern recognition, image subtraction for lC chip inspection, and matrix multiplication for optical computing.

Advances in white-light optical signal processing

A technique that permits signal processing operations which can be carried out by white light source is described. The method performs signal processing that obeys the concept of coherent light rather than incoherent optics. Since the white light source contains all the color wavelengths of the visible light, the technique is very suitable for color signal processing.

Optimum design of antireflection coating for silicon solar cells

Based on classical electromagnetic theory, reflectivity calculations for various single and double optical coating systems for silicon solar cells are presented. From calculations and considerations of solar spectral response of the solar cells, the number and thickness of coating materials needed to obtain efficient solar cells can be predicted. Some experimental results on single layer coated cells are also presented for comparison with calculations, and agreement is good. By means of microwave transmission line analogy, the design of the multilayer coating can be simplified by using Tchebycheff polynomials.
