The elite haplotype OsGATA8 -H coordinates nitrogen uptake and productive tiller formation in rice

Excessive nitrogen promotes the formation of nonproductive tillers in rice, which decreases nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Developing high-NUE rice cultivars through balancing nitrogen uptake and the formation of productive tillers remains a long-standing challenge, yet how these two processes are coordinated in rice remains elusive. Here we identify the transcription factor OsGATA8 as a key coordinator of nitrogen uptake and tiller formation in rice. OsGATA8 negatively regulates nitrogen uptake by repressing transcription of the ammonium transporter gene OsAMT3.2. Meanwhile, it promotes tiller formation by repressing the transcription of OsTCP19, a negative modulator of tillering. We identify OsGATA8-H as a high-NUE haplotype with enhanced nitrogen uptake and a higher proportion of productive tillers. The geographical distribution of OsGATA8-H and its frequency change in historical accessions suggest its adaption to the fertile soil. Overall, this study provides molecular and evolutionary insights into the regulation of NUE and facilitates the breeding of rice cultivars with higher NUE.

MOF-Transformed In 2 O 3-x @C Nanocorn Electrocatalyst for Efficient CO 2 Reduction to HCOOH

For electrochemical CO 2 reduction to HCOOH, an ongoing challenge is to design energy efficient electrocatalysts that can deliver a high HCOOH current density (J HCOOH ) at a low overpotential. Indium oxide is good HCOOH production catalyst but with low conductivity. In this work, we report a unique corn design of In 2 O 3-x @C nanocatalyst, wherein In 2 O 3-x nanocube as the fine grains dispersed uniformly on the carbon nanorod cob, resulting in the enhanced conductivity. Excellent performance is achieved with 84% Faradaic efficiency (FE) and 11 mA cm –2 J HCOOH at a low potential of – 0.4 V versus RHE. At the current density of 100 mA cm –2 , the applied potential remained stable for more than 120 h with the FE above 90%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the abundant oxygen vacancy in In 2 O 3-x has exposed more In 3+ sites with activated electroactivity, which facilitates the formation of HCOO* intermediate. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy also confirms In 3+ as the active site and the key intermediate of HCOO* during the process of CO 2 reduction to HCOOH.

Alternative splicing of OsGS1;1 affects nitrogen‐use efficiency, grain development, and amylose content in rice

SUMMARY Excessive nitrogen fertilizer application is harmful to the environment and reduces the quality of cereal crops. Maintaining crop yields under low nitrogen (LN) conditions and improving quality are important goals for cereal crop breeding. Although the effects of nitrogen assimilation on crop nitrogen‐use efficiency (NUE) have been intensively studied, natural variations of the key assimilation genes underlying grain development and quality are largely unclear. Here, we identified an NUE‐associated gene, OsGS1;1 , encoding glutamine synthase, through genome‐wide association analysis, followed by validation experiments and functional analysis. Fifteen single‐nucleotide polymorphisms in the OsGS1;1 region led to alternative splicing that generated two functional transcripts: OsGS1;1a and OsGS1;1b . The elite haplotype of OsGS1;1 showed high OsGS1;1b activity, which improved NUE, affected grain development, and reduced amylose content. The results show that OsGS1;1 , which is induced under LN conditions, affects grain formation by regulating sugar metabolism and may provide a new avenue for the breeding of high‐yield and high‐quality rice ( Oryza sativa ).

CONGO²: Scalable Online Anomaly Detection and Localization in Power Electronics Networks

Rapid and accurate detection and localization of electronic disturbances simultaneously are important for preventing its potential damages and determining potential remedies. Existing anomaly detection methods are severely limited by the low accuracy, the expensive computational cost and the need for highly trained personnel. There is an urgent need for a scalable online algorithm for in-field analysis of large-scale power electronics networks. Here in this paper, we propose a fast and accurate algorithm for anomaly detection and localization of power electronics networks: stratified colored-node graph (CONGO2). This algorithm hierarchically models the change of correlated waveforms and then correlated sensors using the colored-node graph. By aggregating the change of each sensor with its neighbors’ inputs, we can spontaneously identify and localize the anomaly that cannot be detected by data collected from a single sensor. As our proposed method only focuses on the changes within a short time frame, it is highly computational efficient and only needs small data storage. Thus, our method is ideal for online and reliable anomaly detection and localization of large-scale power electronic networks. Compared to existing anomaly detection methods, our method is entirely data-driven without training data, highly accurate and reliable for wide-spectrum anomalies detection, and more importantly, capable of both detection and localization. Thus, it is ideal for infield deployment for large-scale power electronic networks. As illustrated by a distributed energy resources (DERs) power grid with 37-node, our method can effectively detect and localize various cyber and physical attacks.

A mechanistic study of cellulase adsorption onto lignin

To explore the effect of lignin composition on cellulase adsorption, here dehydrogenation polymers (DHPs) were prepared from p-glucocoumaryl alcohol/coniferin/syringin, giving rise to H-DHP, G-DHP, and S-DHP, respectively. The structures of DHPs were thoroughly characterized and compared by GPC and NMR techniques, and the Langmuir isotherm protocol was applied to determine the cellulase adsorption behaviors of these different types of DHPs. The adsorption study indicated that the binding strength between the DHPs and cellulase varied in the following order: G-DHP > H-DHP > S-DHP. The inhibition of different types of DHPs on enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose was in the same order as the cellulase adsorption, indicating that non-productive adsorption was the main way to influence cellulase. The correlation analysis results showed a positive association between the phenolic hydroxyl group content in DHPs and their maximum adsorption capacity toward enzymes. A negative correlation between the PDI and binding strength was also observed. It was also found that the adsorbed cellulase could be desorbed and retained normal enzyme activity, and so it was presumed that DHPs and cellulase were mainly linked by physisorption such as hydrogen bonding. This study clearly showed that the composition of lignin had a great impact on cellulase, and that G-type lignin exhibited the most detrimental effect. The results could provide useful information on the mechanism of cellulase adsorption onto lignin using DHPs as lignin model compounds.

Correlations of the physicochemical properties of organosolv lignins from Broussonetia papyrifera with their antioxidant activities

To understand the influence of lignin characteristics on their antioxidant activities, lignins were isolated from Broussonetia papyrifera by organosolv pretreatment at different temperatures. The physicochemical features of the lignins were investigated by GPC, 31 P NMR and 2D HSQC NMR analyses. An increase of organosolv pretreatment temperature resulted in a decrease of M w and an increase of the phenolic hydroxyl group content in the isolated lignin. The lignins extracted at higher organosolv pretreatment temperature showed higher antioxidant activity according to the IC 50 determined using DPPH and ABTS. The correlations between the physicochemical properties of organosolv lignins and their antioxidant activities were studied. The contents of phenolic hydroxyl groups, especially syringyl and guaiacyl, and double bonds in the C α position had positive effects on the antioxidant activity of the lignins. Finally, on the other hand, M w and aliphatic hydroxyl groups of the lignins exhibited negative correlations with the antioxidant activity.

Sea ice parameters in the north and south polar regions are important components of the global climate system. Current air-sea-ice models do not take into account oscillatory behavior in the ice covers other than for the seasonal cycle, since the relative importance of such oscillations is not known. An analysis of oscillatory behavior then becomes important from the standpoints of determining the significance of the various oscillatory components and perhaps discovery of some new aspects of the air-sea-ice interaction processes. One of these components, the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is known to be associated with weather changes on a global scale. Indeed, its spectral components have also been observed in the sea ice distribution in both hemispheres.
