Quantifying the resonant photoemission of radiation damaged Pu

Here, the resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (ResPes) of new and aged δ-Pu(Ga) is reassessed by using the small oxygen contaminant peaks as an independent and quantitative check upon conventional cross-photon-energy normalization. Good agreement is found between the measured oxygen intensities and the atomic cross section calculations. Consistent with earlier analyses, the radiation induced damage in the aged samples is found to compress and sharpen the 5f peaks. This is associated with increased localization of the 5f bands, corresponding to the 5f density of states calculations that show a narrowing of 5f bandwidth with cluster size diminishment.

FEFF analysis of americium oxides

The Am N 4,5 (4d 3/2 and 4d 5/2 ) and Am O 4,5 (5d 3/2 and 5d 5/2 ) x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of americium sesquioxide (Am 2 O 3 ) and americium dioxide (AmO 2 ) has been evaluated with FEFF, a Green's function–based, multiple scattering code. Taking guidance from the intermediate coupling model (ICM), applicable to local and nonmagnetized samples, it is possible to completely reconstruct the experimental results for the N 4,5 spectra, including the observed differences between the Am 2 O 3 and the AmO 2 cases. Although complicated by a more asymmetric line shape and difficult background variations, the FEFF analysis confirms the absence of core hole angular momentum coupling in Am O 4,5 spectroscopy.

Multielectronic and multiatomic effects in the U O 4,5 x-ray absorption spectroscopy of uranium dioxide

In order to explain all of the spectral features observed in the U O 4,5 x-ray absorption spectrum of uranium dioxide (UO 2 ), it is necessary to include both multielectron effects and multiatomic effects. The 5d (core hole)-5f (electron) angular momentum coupling that gives rise to the giant resonance has been treated within ligand field density functional theory, and the electron scattering that generates the extended x-ray absorption fine structure has been included via the spectral simulation program FEFF: both within a UO 8 fluorite cluster picture. An atomic model is insufficient to explain all of the observed spectral features.

Comment on “Investigations on ion irradiation induced modifications in Th 5f occupancy in thoria,” by P. Jegadeesan, S. Amirthapandian, Gurpreet Kaur, D. Sanjay Kumar, Arindam Das, D.K. Avasthi, K. Ananthasivan, B.K. Panigrahi

The primary purpose of this letter is to address some issues raised in the paper by Jegadeesan et al. There are three salient points. (1) The Branching Ratio (BR) analysis of thorium dioxide is complicated by peaks from Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). (2) Uranium metal is not an LS coupling but rather a delocalized 5f case. (3) Radiation damage effects in the BR measurements are small but strong effects can be seen in Resonant Photoemission.

Pu 5f Occupation in Plutonium Dioxide

Herein an actinide N 4,5 branching ratio analysis of PuO 2 and UO 2 has been performed, including measurements with a scanning transmission electron microscope at the Advanced Light Source. It is shown that the 5f occupation of the Pu in plutonium dioxide is n = 5. This is contrary to recent results from another technique.
