Multimodal 3D quantification of particle stimulated nucleation in industrially manufactured aluminium AA5182 sheet

Particle stimulated nucleation is a dominant recrystallisation mechanism observed in many industrially relevant aluminium alloys during thermomechanical processing. Here, in this work, we quantify particle stimulated nucleation in 3D in an aluminium AA5182 alloy sheet cold-rolled to 75% thickness reduction. Second phase particles and nuclei are mapped in the same sample volume by conventional laboratory absorption X-ray tomography and synchrotron X-ray Laue micro-diffraction. The large second phase particles are classified as Fe- and Mg-rich phases. It is found that 84% of the nuclei are particle stimulated and 40% of the particles stimulate nucleation. The critical particle diameter is found to be 4 μm. Deviatoric elastic strains are derived from micro-diffraction data and it is found that elastic strains are present in the recrystallised nuclei. The effects of the different particle types, particle clustering, particle size and aspect ratio as well as strain inheritance are discussed. This work provides a full 3D quantification of particle stimulated nucleation behaviour in AA5182 alloy sheet deformed to high strain.

GeoSoilEnviroCARS (Sector 13) at the Advanced Photon Source: a comprehensive synchrotron radiation facility for Earth science research at ambient and extreme conditions

GeoSoilEnviroCARS (GSECARS) is a comprehensive analytical laboratory for Earth and environmental science research using X-ray beams from the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory. State-of-the-art instruments are available for (1) high-pressure/high- or low-temperature diffraction, total scattering, and spectroscopy (Brillouin, Raman, and VIS-IR) using the laser heated diamond anvil cell (DAC); (2) high-pressure/high-temperature diffraction, scattering, and imaging as well as acoustic emission (AE) and ultrasonics using the large-volume press (LVP); (3) powder, single crystal, and surface/interface diffraction; (4) X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy; (5) X-ray fluorescence microprobe analysis; and (6) microtomography. As shown here, experiments are facilitated by senior level staff who collaborate on all aspects of the analytical work including experiment design, sample preparation, data collection, data interpretation, and publication preparation. Both technical and scientific synergies occur as a result of the intimate association of the various techniques and scientists experienced in the applications of synchrotron radiation to Earth, environmental, and planetary science problems. The facility includes state-of-the-art instrumentation designed and built in-house, including custom X-ray optics, online and offline laser-based systems, specialized sample environments and positioning systems, as well as pixel-array and multi-crystal energy dispersive X-ray detectors, which are available to be shared among the experimental stations.

X-33 Liquid Hydrogen Tanks

The liquid hydrogen tank is a multi-lobe graphite/epoxy tank with integrally bonded, woven composite joints. The tanks are broken down into three major subgroups: aft dome/bulkhead, mid barrel section, and the forward dome/bulkhead. The vehicle uses two tanks (a left and right hand tank) as the "aft fuselage" of the vehicle, to react all body bending loads, landing gear loads, canted and vertical fin loads and air loads, as well as being used as the cryogenic fuel cells.

CN radical reactions with hydrogen cyanide and cyanogen - Comparison of theory and experiment

The method of laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence is used to obtain absolute rate constants for CN radical reactions with HCN and C2N2. The rate constants were found to be temperature-dependent in the range 300-740 K and pressure independent in the range 100-600 Torr. Rice-Remsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory for both reactions employing the transition state parameters obtained by the BAC-MP4 method are made. These calculations yielded reasonable results for the CN + HCN reaction, predicting both the temperature dependence and pressure independence. No pressure effect was observed in the pressure range 100-1000 Torr at temperatures below 900 K, confirming the experimental results.

Chemisorption and reactions on clusters of nickel atoms

The nucleation and growth of metallic clusters on a substantially amorphous substrate are discussed with emphasis on the geometrical and electronic structure of the clusters. Several clusters of different symmetry containing five to nine nickel atoms were studied. It was found that the energy range of primary d-like states is not significantly different from the width of the d-band states in nickel metal, as long as the interatomic distance is comparable to that in the bulk metal. The approach of one or more molecules to the cluster is examined using at the hydrogenation of acetylene and the dehydrogenation of ethylene as examples.
