Fluorescent conjugated polymers containing semi-ladder units for light-emitting field-effect transistors

Materials are provided for use as active emissive layers in organic electronic devices such as light-emitting filed effect transistors. Light-emitting transistors (LET) are an alternative to light-emitting diodes and have several important benefits, however, materials developed specifically for LET are quite scarce. Herein a new family of materials is disclosed that has been developed specifically for LET.

Double Doping of Semiconducting Polymers Using Ion-Exchange with a Dianion

The interactions between counterions and electronic carriers in electrically doped semiconducting polymers are important for delocalization of charge carriers, electronic conductivity, and thermal stability. The introduction of a dianions in semiconducting polymers leads to double doping where there is one counterion for two charge carriers. Double doping minimizes structural distortions, but changes the electrostatic interactions between the carriers and counterions. Polymeric ionic liquids (PIL) with croconate dianions are helpful to investigate the role of the counterion in p-type semiconducting polymers. PILs prevent diffusion of the cation into the semiconducting polymers during ion exchange. The redox-active croconate dianions undergo ion exchange with doped semiconducting polymers depending on their ionization energy. Croconate dianions are found to reduce doped films of poly(3-hexyl thiophene), but undergo ion exchange with a polythiophene with tetraethylene glycol side chains, P(g 4 2T-T), that has a lower ionization energy. The croconate dianion maintains crystalline order in P(g 4 2T-T) and leads to a lower activation energy for the electrical conductivity than PF 6 – counterions. The control of the doping level with croconate allows optimization of the thermoelectric performance of the semiconducting polymer. Finally, the thermal stability of the doped films of P(g 4 2T-T) is found to depend strongly on the nature of the counterion.

Unraveling two distinct polymorph transition mechanisms in one n-type single crystal for dynamic electronics

Cooperativity is used by living systems to circumvent energetic and entropic barriers to yield highly efficient molecular processes. Cooperative structural transitions involve the concerted displacement of molecules in a crystalline material, as opposed to typical molecule-by-molecule nucleation and growth mechanisms which often break single crystallinity. Cooperative transitions have acquired much attention for low transition barriers, ultrafast kinetics, and structural reversibility. However, cooperative transitions are rare in molecular crystals and their origin is poorly understood. Crystals of 2-dimensional quinoidal terthiophene (2DQTT-o-B), a high-performance n-type organic semiconductor, demonstrate two distinct thermally activated phase transitions following these mechanisms. Here we show reorientation of the alkyl side chains triggers cooperative behavior, tilting the molecules like dominos. Whereas, nucleation and growth transition is coincident with increasing alkyl chain disorder and driven by forming a biradical state. We establish alkyl chain engineering as integral to rationally controlling these polymorphic behaviors for novel electronic applications.

Donor–Acceptor Conjugated Copolymers Containing Transition-Metal Complex: Intrachain Magnetic Exchange Interactions and Magneto-Optical Activity

A donor-acceptor conjugated copolymer containing thienothiophene (TT) (Donor) units and Co(II) complexes (Acceptor) has been synthesized and characterized. The studies of magnetic properties of the polymers by SQUID and EPR measurements showed antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between neighboring spin centers along with the polymer backbone through intrachain in-teractions. It is the first time that D-A conjugated polymer backbone serving as bridging ligands for magnetic couplings, making this type of polymers promising as magnetic materials. Moreover, the magneto-optical activity (MOA) of polymer LCP1 was char-acterized using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy. It was found that the material exhibits a large magneto-optic rotation with a peak Verdet constant of 2980 deg*T -1 *m -1 at 590 nm.

Synergy between Photoluminescence and Charge Transport Achieved by Finely Tuning Polymeric Backbones for Efficient Light-Emitting Transistor

The lack of design principle for developing high-performance polymer materials displaying strong fluorescence and high ambipolar charge mobilities limited their performance in organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs), electrically pumped organic laser, and other advanced electronic devices. Here, a series of semiladder polymers by copolymerization of weak acceptors (TPTQ or TPTI) and weak donors (fluorene (F) or carbazole (C)) have been developed for luminescent and charge transporting properties. It was found that enhanced planarity, high crystallinity, and a delicate balance in interchain aggregation obtained in the new copolymer, TPTQ-F, contributed to high ambipolar charge mobilities and photoluminescent quantum yield. TPTQ-F showed excellent performance in solution-processed multilayered OLET devices with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.3%.

Radically Tunable n-Type Organic Semiconductor via Polymorph Control

Polymorphism has emerged as an important design consideration in organic semiconductors (OSCs). Previously, in many OSCs, even small changes in molecular stacking can cause drastic changes to the optical and electronic properties. However, investigation into n-type semiconductors has significantly lagged behind their p-type counterparts. In this work, we present the prolific polymorphism of 2-dimensional quinoidal terthiophene (2DQTT-o-B) and systematically investigate each of 5 polymorphs, 3 of which have been previously unreported. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction provided a key method to understanding the structure of each polymorph. Via the polymorphic transitions mapped, we tuned the electron mobility by 5 orders of magnitude, from 5.63 × 10 –5 to 0.22 cm 2 V –1 s –1 . These were accompanied by modifications to the optical properties, namely we observed substantial differences in the refractive index noted by intensity differences under polarized optical microscopy and a large shift in optical band gap from 1.18 eV up to 1.40 eV. Lastly, we suggest that changes to these properties may be related to the unique quinoidal to aromatic transition observed in quinoidal molecules.

Foldable semi-ladder polymers: novel aggregation behavior and high-performance solution-processed organic light-emitting transistors

A critical issue in developing high-performance organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs) is to balance the trade-off between charge transport and light emission in a semiconducting material. Although traditional materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) or organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have shown modest performance in OLET devices, design strategies towards high-performance OLET materials and the crucial structure–performance relationship remain unclear. Our research effort in developing cross-conjugated weak acceptor-weak donor copolymers for luminescent properties lead us to an unintentional discovery that these copolymers form coiled foldamers with intramolecular H-aggregation, leading to their exceptional OLET properties. An impressive external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6.9% in solution-processed multi-layer OLET devices was achieved.
