Sea Ice Identification Using Dual-Polarized Ku-Band Scatterometer Data

Maps of sea ice have been based on a combination of observations from aircraft and ships, and infrared and passive microwave data from various spaceborne sensors. Described here is the potential of using dual-polarized scatterometer returns from the polar oceans to identify the edge of the ice cover. This ice edge could be used to compute the ice extent, which may be a useful indicator of climatic changes.

Advanced Techniques for Improving Wind Direction Ambiguity Removal in Scatterometry

Ocean surface winds, which drive the ocean currents and momentum flux exchanges, are critical for atmospheric and oceanographic studies. Ocean surface winds also generate small capillary waves which affect the normalized radar cross section of the ocean surface. A scatterometer is a microwave radar which measures these cross section values. This talk describes related new techniques.

Modeling of Wind Direction Signals in Polarimetric Sea Surface Brightness Temperatures

There is an increasing interest in the applications of polarimetric microwave radiometers for ocean wind remote sensing. Aircraft and spaceborne radiometers have found significant wind direction signals in sea surface brightness temperatures. It is not yet understood what physical scattering mechanisms produce the observed wind direction dependence. Some theories are examined along with the available data.
