Satellite Data Product and Data Dissemination Updates for the SPoRT Sea Surface Temperature Composite Product

The SPoRT SST composite is a reliable and robust high-resolution product generated twice per day in near real time. It incorporates highest quality data satellite data from infrared imagers and global analysis from NESDIS and UKMO. Recent updates to the product include the inclusion of VIIRS data to extend the life of the product beyond the MODIS era. It is used by a number of users in their DSS.

IN31A-1734 Development and Evaluation of a Gridded CrIS/ATMS Visualization for Operational Forecasting

A collaborative effort between SPoRT, CIMSS, CIRA, GINA, and NOAA has produced a unique gridded visualization of real-time CrIS/ATMS sounding products. This product uses the NUCAPS retrieval algorithm and polar2grid software to generate plan-view and cross-section visualization for forecast challenges associated with cold air aloft and convective potential. Forecasters at select partner offices have been able to view the Gridded NUCAPS products in AWIPS alongside other operational data products with generally favorable feedback.

Assimilation of SMOS (and SMAP) Retrieved Soil Moisture into the Land Information System

Goal: Accurate, high-resolution (approx.3 km) soil moisture in near-real time. Situational awareness (drought assessment, flood and fire threat). Local modeling applications (to improve sfc-PBL exchanges) Method: Assimilate satellite soil moisture retrievals into a land surface model. Combines high-resolution geophysical model data with latest satellite observations.

Development, Application, and Transition of Aerosol and Trace Gas Products Derived from Next-Generation Satellite Observations to Operations

NASA Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center has a history of successfully transitioning unique observations and research capabilities to the operational weather community to improve short-term forecasts. SPoRTstrives to bridge the gap between research and operations by maintaining interactive partnerships with end users to develop products that match specific forecast challenges, provide training, and assess the products in the operational environment. This presentation focuses on recent product development, application, and transition of aerosol and trace gas products to operations for specific forecasting applications. Recent activities relating to the SPoRT ozone products, aerosol optical depth composite product, sulfur dioxide, and aerosol index products are discussed.
