Unveiling the role of structural vacancies in Mn-based Prussian blue analogues for energy storage applications

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are promising cathode materials for monovalent- and multivalent-ion batteries due to their large framework structures. Nevertheless, the influence of lattice vacancies on their electrochemical performance has not been thoroughly clarified, hindering the further development of PBAs. Here we identify two types of functional vacancies, i.e., structural vacancies (SVs) and incidental vacancies (IVs), in manganese hexacyanoferrate (MnHCF) through synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Unlike structurally disordered IVs, the introduction of structurally ordered SVs promotes ion transport and reduces the interaction between host ions and the framework, enabling improved cycling and rate performance. The controllable adjustment of SVs in K-rich MnHCF is achieved through a co-reactant method. Furthermore, the partial introduction of SVs in K-rich MnHCF is demonstrated to favor both a milder structural evolution by alleviating the Jahn–Teller distortion of Mn 3+ and a stable dynamic process of interface reaction. As a result, this study unveils the potential importance of incorporating structural vacancies into MnHCF for advanced energy storage applications.

Chemical Long-Range Disorder in Prussian Blue Analogues for Potassium Storage

Ordered Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are vital cathode materials for ion storage, but strong interactions between the framework and host ions, especially large ions like K + , hinder ion migration, leading to poor diffusion kinetics and reduced reaction activity. Here, in this study, we present an approach to overcome this challenge by constructing chemical long-range disorder (LRD) in PBAs, involving maintaining inherent local coordination while introducing disorder over long-range spatial dimensions. Order control is achieved by introducing a large-sized lattice to disrupt the original lattice growth during synthesis. Unlike traditional monocrystalline particles, the abundant grain boundaries in the obtained LRD structure create significant potential fluctuations, generating additional electric fields that enhance ion transport. Furthermore, the short lattice coherence length reduces interaction between the framework and K + . These factors collectively contribute to the improved electrochemical activity of LRD PBAs during K + storage. This finding opens new avenues for designing PBA structures and offers insights into their structure-electrochemical performance relationship.

2023 roadmap for potassium-ion batteries

Abstract The heavy reliance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has caused rising concerns on the sustainability of lithium and transition metal and the ethic issue around mining practice. Developing alternative energy storage technologies beyond lithium has become a prominent slice of global energy research portfolio. The alternative technologies play a vital role in shaping the future landscape of energy storage, from electrified mobility to the efficient utilization of renewable energies and further to large-scale stationary energy storage. Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are a promising alternative given its chemical and economic benefits, making a strong competitor to LIBs and sodium-ion batteries for different applications. However, many are unknown regarding potassium storage processes in materials and how it differs from lithium and sodium and understanding of solid–liquid interfacial chemistry is massively insufficient in PIBs. Therefore, there remain outstanding issues to advance the commercial prospects of the PIB technology. This Roadmap highlights the up-to-date scientific and technological advances and the insights into solving challenging issues to accelerate the development of PIBs. We hope this Roadmap aids the wider PIB research community and provides a cross-referencing to other beyond lithium energy storage technologies in the fast-pacing research landscape.

Pursuing graphite-based K-ion O 2 batteries: a lesson from Li-ion batteries

The replacement of lithium metal by lithium intercalated graphite was crucial for developing safe lithium-ion batteries. Superoxide-based potassium–oxygen batteries represent an exciting metal–oxygen battery with the highest energy efficiencies. However, using potassium metal is a more serious safety threat than lithium. Herein, we explore the possibility of graphite-intercalation anodes for potassium-ion oxygen batteries (PIOBs) with enhanced safety. This work demonstrates for the first time that establishing an artificial potassium salt-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) enables a reversible graphite-intercalation anode (249.6 mA h g -1 after 600 cycles) in a potassium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (KTFSI)-based localized high-concentration electrolyte. Such an electrolyte is stable with the superoxide cathode. The PIOB delivers energy efficiencies above 90% at a depth of discharge (DOD) of 25% for 80 cycles. A three-electrode measurement shows that its overpotential mainly comes from the anode. The lifespan is limited to the gradual degradation of the artificial SEI caused by oxygen crossover. This work represents a step towards achieving holistic anode–electrolyte–cathode compatibility in a PIOB and its realistic evaluation under a controlled DOD.
