Anisotropic spin-wave excitations in multiferroic BiFeO 3

Polarized inelastic neutron-scattering experiments have been performed to elucidate the anisotropic behavior of the low-energy spin-wave excitations in a multiferroic BiFeO 3 , which shows a cycloidal spin structure below 640 K. Using neutron polarization analysis for single magnetic domain crystals, magnetic excitation modes in and out of the cycloidal plane below 6 meV were separated successfully. The magnetic excitation spectra were analyzed using linear spin-wave theory. The low-energy magnon density of states consist of several magnon modes, including the two anisotropic modes, Φ and Ψ modes, distributed in and out of the cycloidal plane, respectively, which were previously observed using optical spectroscopies. Furthermore, there are other magnon modes that are not active in optical measurements. Additionally, a model spin Hamiltonian, which reproduces the spin-wave frequencies observed using optical spectroscopies, explains the overall spectra reasonably well.

Memory effect and phase transition in a hierarchical trap model for spin glasses

Here, we introduce an efficient dynamical tree method that enables us to explicitly demonstrate the thermoremanent magnetization memory effect in a hierarchical energy landscape. Our simulation nicely reproduces the nontrivial waiting-time and waiting-temperature dependences in this nonequilibrium phenomenon. We further investigate the condensation effect, in which a small set of microstates dominates the thermodynamic behavior in the multilayer trap model. Importantly, a structural phase transition of the multilayer tree model is shown to coincide with the onset of the condensation phenomenon. Our results underscore the importance of hierarchical structure and demonstrate the intimate relation between the glassy behavior and structure of barrier trees.

Noncollinear spin structure with weak ferromagnetism in NbMnP

NbMnP is a metallic material, which consists of the zigzag chains of Mn moments along the b axis. The magnetic susceptibility as well as the resistivity shows an anomaly at 233 K, which indicates an antiferromagnetic phase transition. Our neutron powder diffraction experiment reveals that the magnetic structure is a Q=0 structure and noncollinear with an easy plane anisotropy perpendicular to the b axis, and the a- and c-axis magnetic components align antiferromagnetically and ferromagnetically along the zigzag chain direction, respectively. The ordered moment is 1.2μ B , which is reduced probably due to the itineracy of the Mn moments. A localized picture model suggests that the Q=0 magnetic structure is formed by the frustration among several exchange couplings. A weak ferromagnetic component is also present in the antiferromagnetic phase, which is considered to be caused by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Freezing of a Disorder Induced Spin Liquid with Strong Quantum Fluctuations

We report Sr2CuTe 0.5 W 0.5 O 6 is a square-lattice magnet with superexchange between S =$\frac{1}{2}$Cu 2+ spins mediated by randomly distributed Te and W ions. Here, using sub-K temperature and 20 μeV energy resolution neutron scattering experiments we show that this system transits from a gapless disorder-induced spin liquid to a new quantum state below T f =1.7(1) K, exhibiting a weak frozen moment of $\langle$S$\rangle$/S~0.1 and low energy dynamic susceptibility, χ"(ℏω), linear in energy which is surprising for such a weak freezing in this highly fluctuating quantum regime.

Spin dynamics of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a kagome bilayer

We research the spin dynamics of a classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor interactions on a quasi-two-dimensional kagome bilayer. This geometrically frustrated lattice consists of two kagome layers connected by a triangular-lattice linking layer. By combining Monte Carlo with precessional spin dynamics simulations, we compute the dynamical structure factor of the classical spin liquid in the kagome bilayer and investigate the thermal and dilution effects. While the low-frequency and long-wavelength dynamics of the cooperative paramagnetic phase is dominated by spin diffusion, weak magnon excitations persist at higher energies, giving rise to the half-moon pattern in the dynamical structure factor. In the presence of spin vacancies, the dynamical properties of the diluted system can be understood within the two-population picture. The spin diffusion of the “correlated” spin clusters is mainly driven by the zero-energy weather-vane modes, giving rise to an autocorrelation function that decays exponentially with time. On the other hand, the diffusive dynamics of the quasifree “orphan” spins leads to a distinctive longer-time power-law tail in the autocorrelation function. We discuss the implications of our work for the glassy behaviors observed in the archetypal frustrated magnet SrCr 9p Ga 12-9 pO 19 (SCGO).

Temporally decoherent and spatially coherent vibrations in metal halide perovskites

The long carrier lifetime and defect tolerance in metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are major contributors to the superb performance of MHP optoelectronic devices. Large polarons were reported to be responsible for the long carrier lifetime. Yet microscopic mechanisms of the large polaron formation, including the so-called phonon melting, are still under debate. In this study, time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering experiments and first-principles density-functional theory calculations were employed to investigate the lattice vibrations (or phonon dynamics) in methylammonium lead iodide, a prototypical example of MHPs. Our findings are that optical phonons lose temporal coherence gradually with increasing temperature which vanishes at the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal structural phase transition. Surprisingly, however, we found that the spatial coherence is still retained throughout the decoherence process. We argue that the temporally decoherent and spatially coherent vibrations contribute to the formation of large polarons in this metal halide perovskite.

Stabilized Charge, Spin, and Orbital Ordering by the 6s 2 Lone Pair in Bi 0.5 Pb 0.5 MnO 3

Bi and Pb ions with charge degree of freedom depending on 6s 2 and 6s 0 electronic configurations were combined with the Mn ion in a perovskite oxide. Comprehensive theoretical and experimental investigations revealed the Bi 3+ 0.5 Pb 2+ 0.5 Mn 3+ 0.5 Mn 4+ 0.5 O 3 charge ordered state with CE-type spin and dz 2 orbital orderings as observed in La 0.5 Ca 0.5 MnO 3 , Nd 0.5 Sr 0.5 MnO 3 , and Bi 0.5 Sr 0.5 MnO 3 . Finally, the charge and orbital orderings were preserved above 500 K owing to the stereochemical activity of Bi 3+ and Pb 2+ ions which stabilized the structural distortion.
