Double Paddle‐Wheel Enhanced Sodium Ion Conduction in an Antiperovskite Solid Electrolyte

Abstract Antiperovskite structure compounds (X 3 AB, where X is an alkali cation and A and B are anions) have the potential for highly correlated motion between the cation and a cluster anion on the A or B site. This so‐called “paddle‐wheel” mechanism may be the basis for enhanced cation mobility in solid electrolytes. Through combined experiments and modeling, the first instance of a double paddle‐wheel mechanism, leading to fast sodium ion conduction in the antiperovskite Na 3− x O 1− x (NH 2 ) x (BH 4 ), is shown. As the concentration of amide (NH 2 − ) cluster anions is increased, large positive deviations in ionic conductivity above that predicted from a vacancy diffusion model are observed. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, powder X‐ray diffraction, synchrotron X‐ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, and NMR, the cluster anion rotational dynamics are characterized and it is found that cation mobility is influenced by the rotation of both NH 2 − and BH 4 − species, resulting in sodium ion conductivity a factor of 10 2 higher at x = 1 than expected for the vacancy mechanism alone. Generalization of this phenomenon to other compounds could accelerate fast ion conductor exploration and design.

Spontaneous and field-induced crystallographic reorientation of metal electrodeposits at battery anodes

The propensity of metal anodes of contemporary interest (e.g., Li, Al, Na, and Zn) to form non-planar, dendritic morphologies during battery charging is a fundamental barrier to achievement of full reversibility. We experimentally investigate the origins of dendritic electrodeposition of Zn, Cu, and Li in a three-electrode electrochemical cell bounded at one end by a rotating disc electrode. We find that the classical picture of ion depletion–induced growth of dendrites is valid in dilute electrolytes but is essentially irrelevant in the concentrated (≥1 M) electrolytes typically used in rechargeable batteries. Using Zn as an example, we find that ion depletion at the mass transport limit may be overcome by spontaneous reorientation of Zn crystallites from orientations parallel to the electrode surface to dominantly homeotropic orientations, which appear to facilitate contact with cations outside the depletion layer. This chemotaxis-like process causes obvious texturing and increases the porosity of metal electrodeposits.

Electrodeposition of Zinc in Aqueous Electrolytes Containing High Molecular Weight Polymers

Strong polarization of the ion distribution in liquid electrolytes subjected to potential differences exceeding the thermal voltage, V T = kT/e, produces a hydrodynamic instability termed electroconvection at ion-selective interfaces. Electroconvection is desirable in some situations (e.g., electrodialysis) because it promotes mixing in a stagnant electrolyte layer, enhancing the ion flux at a fixed potential difference. It is undesirable in others (e.g., electrodeposition of metals) where early experiments show that convective fluid rolls associated with hydrodynamic instability in bounded electrolytes produce preferential metal deposition at localized regions on an electrode. Such localized deposition drives the family of morphological instabilities loosely termed dendritic electrodeposition. We experimentally investigate the effect of ultrahigh molecular weight polymer additives on the onset conditions and physical characteristics of both instabilities. Direct observations of electrodeposit morphology and tracer particle motions used in tandem with indirect electrokinetic measurements reveal that even at moderate concentrations, the polymer additives have a large beneficial effect in extending the range of electric potentials where stable electrodeposition is observed. Additionally, we report that at polymer concentrations above the entanglement threshold, high molecular weight polymers impart elasticity to liquid electrolytes which dampen electroconvective flow at a cation-selective interface but have at most a minimal effect on the bulk ionic conductivity of the liquid.
