Tuning colour centres at a twisted hexagonal boron nitride interface

The colour centre platform holds promise for quantum technologies, and hexagonal boron nitride has attracted attention due to the high brightness and stability, optically addressable spin states and wide wavelength coverage discovered in its emitters. However, its application is hindered by the typically random defect distribution and complex mesoscopic environment. In this study, employing cathodoluminescence, we demonstrate on-demand activation and control of colour centre emission at the twisted interface of two hexagonal boron nitride flakes. Further, we show that colour centre emission brightness can be enhanced by two orders of magnitude by tuning the twist angle. Additionally, by applying an external voltage, nearly 100% brightness modulation is achieved. Our ab initio GW and GW plus Bethe–Salpeter equation calculations suggest that the emission is correlated to nitrogen vacancies and that a twist-induced moiré potential facilitates electron–hole recombination. This mechanism is further exploited to draw nanoscale colour centre patterns using electron beams.

Effect of Low Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) Combined with Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) on Awakening of Coma Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury

Coma caused by craniocerebral injury is a common condition of neurosurgical acute injury. There is no specific method to promote awakening in a clinic. Early comprehensive treatment may be helpful to patients. The common methods are hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). However, the application effect and mechanism of rTMS combined with HBO on coma patients with traumatic brain injury need to be further studied. The brain stem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) is examined by the Kennedy coma recovery scale (CRS-R), the recovery of brain function and the state of consciousness are evaluated, and the therapeutic effect is evaluated by the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). Cerebrospinal fluid NE level, MCA blood flow velocity, and left brainstem and right brainstem auditory evoked potential are used to evaluate brain rehabilitation. RTMS combined with HBO could shorten the wake-up time, improve the wake-up rate, improve the GCS score and CRS-R score, shorten the brain wave latency time of the left and right brainstem, increase the NE level of cerebrospinal fluid, and decrease the blood flow velocity of MCA. RTMS combines with HBO can improve the nerve excitability of brain cells, reduce the disturbance of consciousness, promote the functional recovery of brain injury, and has a certain role in promoting the awakening of patients with traumatic brain injury coma.

The NPF Effect on CCN Number Concentrations: A Review and Re-Evaluation of Observations From 35 Sites Worldwide

The new particle formation (NPF) effect on cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) differs from region to region and remains highly uncertain. In this work, we re-evaluate the NPF-initiated enhancements in CCN number concentrations (E_N CCN ) by compiling results from 35 field sites worldwide and five global models. We show the E_N CCN at sites close to the anthropogenic sources are more than 2-fold as large as that at remote sites with supersaturations of 0.1%–1.0%. The enhancements anti-correlate with the time scales for the new particles to grow to CCN size, which are 5–10 and 20–30 hr at polluted and remote sites, respectively. We further reveal that under polluted environments the condensational growth of new particles may be accelerated, leading to larger E_N CCN . The models fail to simulate the E_NCCN in polluted regions. Our study highlights the importance of parameterizing the time scale of NPF to affect CCN differently for remote and polluted regions in models.
