Pseudospin-triplet pairing in iron-chalcogenide superconductors

Abstract Understanding the pairing symmetry is a crucial theoretical aspect in the study of unconventional superconductivity for interpreting experimental results. Here we study superconductivity of electron systems with both spin and pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom. By solving linearized gap equations, we derive a weak coupling criterion for the even-parity spin-singlet pseudospin-triplet pairing. It can generally mix with the on-site s -wave pairing since both of them belong to the same symmetry representation ( A 1 g ) and their mixture could naturally give rise to anisotropic intra-band pairing gap functions with or without nodes. This may directly explain why some of the iron-chalcogenide superconductors are fully gapped (e.g. FeSe thin film) and some have nodes (e.g. LaFePO and LiFeP). We also find that the anisotropy of gap functions can be enhanced when the principal rotation symmetry is spontaneously broken in the normal state such as nematicity, and the energetic stabilization of pseudospin-triplet pairings indicates the coexistence of nematicity and superconductivity. This could be potentially applied to bulk FeSe, where gap anisotropy has been experimentally observed.

Controlling Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in a centrosymmetric nonsymmorphic crystal

Presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in limited noncentrosymmet ric materials leads to novel spin textures and exotic chiral physics. Emergence of DM interaction in centrosymmetric crystals could greatly enrich material realization. Here we show that an itinerant centrosymmetric crystal respecting a nonsymmorphic space group is a new platform for the DM interaction. Taking P4/nmm space group as an example, we demonstrate that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) in teraction induces the DM interactions, in addition to the Heisenberg exchange and the Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-wohlman-Aharony (KSEA) interaction. Here, the direction of DM vector depends on the positions of magnetic atoms in the real space, and the amplitude depends on the location of the Fermi surface in the reciprocal space. The diversity stems from the position-dependent site groups and the momentum-dependent electronic structures guaranteed by the nonsymmorphic symmetries. Our study unveils the role of the nonsymmorphic symmetries in affecting magnetism, and suggests that the nonsymmorphic crystals can be promising platforms to design magnetic interactions.

Interlayer correlated fractional quantum Hall state in the ν = 4 / 5 bilayer system

We perform exact diagonalization studies for fractional quantum Hall states at filling factor 4/5 in a bilayer system, on a torus with various aspect ratios and angles. In this work we find that in the absence of tunneling, two weakly coupled 2/5 layers undergo a phase transition into an interlayer-correlated regime, which is also Abelian with the fivefold degeneracy on the torus. In the limit of zero layer separation, this phase becomes a singlet in the pseudospin variable describing the layer degree of freedom. By studying the Chern-number matrix, we show that the K matrix describing the interlayer-correlated regime requires a matrix dimension larger than two and this regime is in particular not described by a Halperin state. A detailed analysis of possible 4 × 4 K matrices having the requisite symmetries and quantum numbers shows that there is only one equivalence class of such matrices. A model wave function representing this universality class is constructed. The role of separate particle number conservation in both layers is discussed, and it is argued that this additional symmetry allows for the further distinction of two different symmetry-protected Abelian phases in the interlayer correlated regime. Interlayer tunneling breaks this symmetry and can drive the system into a single-layer regime when strong enough. A qualitative phase diagram in the tunneling-layer separation parameter space is proposed based on our numerical results.
