Laser Additive Manufacturing Process Development for Bismuth Telluride Thermoelectric Material

Thermoelectric generators have strong potential for aerospace and aircraft applications. However, traditional manufacturing methods for thermoelectric devices severely limit device adaptability and consequently marketability. Laser powder bed fusion is an additive manufacturing method which shows promising potential for producing thermoelectric devices. Thermoelectric materials pose unique challenges compared to metals because of low thermal conductivity, brittle fracture characteristics, and irregular powder particle morphologies. Herein, we communicate processing procedures to fabricate thermoelectric parts of Bi 2 Te 3 through laser powder bed fusion. In this study, we identify the successful combination of key process parameters—laser power, scan speed, hatch distance, and powder layer thickness—to achieve high-quality parts in terms of density and physical properties, and we demonstrate the impact of process parameter variation on built part quality. While it cannot exclusively determine part quality, the volumetric energy density is a useful guide in deciding process parameters for thermoelectric materials, and the optimal value is between 9 and 11 J/mm 3 for Bi 2 Te 3 . We demonstrate successful fabrication of different freeform geometries of Bi 2 Te 3 powders. The results suggest it is possible to extend this method more broadly to other semiconductor materials, including thermoelectric power generation materials applicable for space applications.

Significant phase-space-driven thermal transport suppression in BC8 silicon

The BC8 silicon allotrope has a lattice thermal conductivity 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than that of diamond-cubic silicon. In the current work, the phonon density of states, phonon dispersion, and lattice thermal conductivity are investigated by inelastic neutron scattering measurements and first-principles calculations. Flat phonon bands are found to play a critical role in the reduction of lattice thermal conductivity in BC8–Si. Such bands in the low-energy range enhance the phonon scattering between acoustic and low-energy optical phonons, while bands in the intermediate-energy range act as a scattering bridge between the high- and low-energy optical phonons. Further, they significantly enlarge the phonon-phonon scattering phase space and reduces the lattice thermal conductivity in this novel silicon allotrope. This work provides insights into the significant reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity in BC8–Si, thus expanding the understanding of novel silicon allotropes and their development for electronic devices.

Fe doped aluminoborate PKU-1 catalysts for the ketalization of glycerol to solketal: Unveiling the effects of iron composition and boron

An inexpensive Fe doped aluminoborate consisted of 18% Fe in PKU-1 material that exhibits high selectivity of 4-hydroxymethy-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane (Solketal, 98.3%), considerable activity (TOF 51.7 h -1 ), and recyclable ability in the ketalization of glycerol to Solketal with acetone at 318 K has been developed. Here our study demonstrated that the structure of Fe (less agglomerated iron species vs. FeO x clusters) can be tuned by changing Fe loading in the PKU-1 material, which correlated well with experimental observations. Furthermore, the surface boron sites were promoted by iron loading and behaved as Lewis-acid sites to facilitate the reaction process of glycerol ketalization, while the Solketal selectivity was closely related with the structure of iron species in PKU-1, which was proved by kinetic studies, density function theory (DFT) calculations, and a series of spectroscopy studies. This investigation demonstrates that the surface B sites can play important roles in the reaction instead of being spectators.
