Structural and Improper Ferroelectric Properties of TbInO 3 Single Crystal Grown by Laser Floating Zone

The honeycomb TbInO 3 has attracted wide research attention due to its fascinating physical properties. However, TbInO 3 single crystal was difficult to grow owing to the high melting point and serious volatilization of indium during the crystal growth. In this study, the volatilization of the indium element was effectively suppressed by controlling the growth atmosphere and pressure. The excess ratio of indium oxide was determined, and pure hexagonal TbInO 3 crystal was obtained by the laser floating zone method. Systematic studies on the crystal structure and optical and ferroelectric properties were carried out. The structure distortion resulted in the improper geometric ferroelectric revealed by single crystal diffraction and Raman spectrum measurements. The topological vortex domains and P-E hysteresis loop demonstrated the presence of ferroelectricity. TbInO 3 crystal has great potential application in vortex memory.

Using angular two-point correlations to self-calibrate the photometric redshift distributions of DECaLS DR9

Calibrating the redshift distributions of photometric galaxy samples is essential in weak lensing studies. The self-calibration method combines angular auto- and cross-correlations between galaxies in multiple photometric redshift (photo-z) bins to reconstruct the scattering rates matrix between redshift bins. In this paper, we test a recently proposed self-calibration algorithm using the DECaLS Data Release 9 and investigate to what extent the scattering rates are determined. We first mitigate the spurious angular correlations due to imaging systematics by a machine learning based method. We then improve the algorithm for χ 2 minimization and error estimation. Finally, we solve for the scattering matrices, carry out a series of consistency tests, and find reasonable agreements: (1) finer photo-z bins return a high-resolution scattering matrix, and it is broadly consistent with the low-resolution matrix from wider bins; (2) the scattering matrix from the Northern Galactic Cap is almost identical to that from Southern Galactic Cap; (3) the scattering matrices are in reasonable agreement with those constructed from the power spectrum and the weighted spectroscopic subsample. We also evaluate the impact of cosmic magnification. Although it changes little the diagonal elements of the scattering matrix, it affects the off-diagonals significantly. The scattering matrix also shows some dependence on scale cut of input correlations, which may be related to a known numerical degeneracy between certain scattering pairs. In conclusion, this work demonstrates the feasibility of the self-calibration method in real data and provides a practical alternative to calibrate the redshift distributions of photometric samples.

Anomalous Hall effect and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in ultrathin ferrimagnetic NiCo2O4 films

The inverse spinel ferrimagnetic NiCo2O4 possesses high magnetic Curie temperature TC, high spin polarization, and strain-tunable magnetic anisotropy. Understanding the thickness scaling limit of these intriguing magnetic properties in NiCo2O4 thin films is critical for their implementation in nanoscale spintronic applications. In this work, we report the unconventional magnetotransport properties of epitaxial (001) NiCo2O4 films on MgAl2O4 substrates in the ultrathin limit. Anomalous Hall effect measurements reveal strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy for films down to 1.5 unit cell (1.2 nm), while TC for 3 unit cell and thicker films remains above 300 K. The sign change in the anomalous Hall conductivity (σxy) and its scaling relation with the longitudinal conductivity (σxx) can be attributed to the competing effects between impurity scattering and band intrinsic Berry curvature, with the latter vanishing upon the thickness driven metal–insulator transition. Our study reveals the critical role of film thickness in tuning the relative strength of charge correlation, Berry phase effect, spin–orbit interaction, and impurity scattering, providing important material information for designing scalable epitaxial magnetic tunnel junctions and sensing devices using NiCo2O4.

Effect of correlated oxide electrodes on disorder pinning and thermal roughening of ferroelectric domain walls in epitaxial PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 thin films

We report the competing effects of disorder pinning and thermal roughening on ferroelectric domain walls as a function of temperature in epitaxial PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 thin films deposited on (001) SrTiO 3 substrates buffered by three types of correlated oxide electrodes, La 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 , LaNiO 3 , and SrIrO 3 . Piezo-response force microscopy studies show that the 50 nm PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 films are uniformly polarized in the as-grown states, with the patterned domain structures persisting above 700 °C. For all three types of films, the domain wall roughness is dominated by 2D random bond disorder at room temperature, and transitions to 1D thermal roughening upon heating. The roughness exponent ζ increases progressively from 0.3 to 0.5 within a temperature window that depends on the bottom conducting oxide type, from which we extracted the distribution of disorder pinning energy. Lastly, we discuss the possible origins of the disorder pinning and the effect of the correlated oxide electrodes on the energy landscape of DW motion.

Bipolar membrane polarization behavior with systematically varied interfacial areas in the junction region

The palette of applications for bipolar membranes (BPMs) has expanded recently beyond electrodialysis as they are now being considered for fuel cell and electrolysis applications. Their deployment in emerging electrochemical technologies arises from the need to have a membrane separator that provides disparate pH environments and to prevent species crossover. Most materials research for BPMs has focused on water dissociation catalysts and less emphasis has been given to the design of the polycation–polyanion interface for improving BPM performance. Here, soft lithography fabricated a series of micropatterned BPMs with precise control over the interfacial area in the bipolar junction. Polarization experiments showed that a 2.28× increase in interfacial area led to a 250 mV reduction in the onset potential. Additionally, the same increase in interfacial area yielded marginal improvements in current density due to the junction region being under kinetics-diffusion control. A simple physics model based on the electric field of the junction region rationalized the reduction in the overpotential for water dissociation as a function of interfacial area. Finally, the soft lithography approach was also conducive for fabricating BPMs with different chemistries ranging from perfluorinated polymer backbones to alkaline stable poly(arylene) hydrocarbon polymers. These polymer chemistries are better suited for fuel cell and electrolysis applications. The BPM featuring the alkaline stable poly(terphenyl) anion exchange membrane had an onset potential of 0.84 V, which was near the thermodynamic limit, and was about 150 mV lower than a commercially available variant.
