Mechanical, corrosion, and wear properties of biomedical Ti–Zr–Nb–Ta–Mo high entropy alloys

The microstructures, mechanical, corrosion, and wear behaviors of the Ti x ZrNbTaMo (x = 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2, molar ratio) high entropy alloys (HEAs) were studied in this work. It was found that the Ti–Zr–Nb–Ta–Mo HEAs showed a dendrite structure with two body-centered-cubic (BCC) solid solution phases. The Ti 0.5 ZrNbTaMo HEA exhibited a high hardness of about 500 HV, high compressive strength approaching 2,600 MPa, and large plastic strain of over 30%. Furthermore, the highly-protective oxide films formed on the surface of Ti–Zr–Nb–Ta–Mo HEAs in the phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solution, which resulted in the high corrosion resistance of the HEAs. The Ti–Zr–Nb–Ta–Mo HEAs exhibited the greater dry- and wet-wear resistance than that of the traditional biomedical Ti6Al4V alloy. The results also indicated that with the decrease in the Ti content, the wear resistance of the Ti–Zr–Nb–Ta–Mo HEAs in the PBS solution improved. Finally, the Ti 0.5 ZrNbTaMo alloy presented the highest corrosive wear resistance among the four HEAs owing to its combination of good mechanical properties and high chemical stability.

A novel optical sensor for Pb 2+ detection based on in-situ formation of Ruddlesden-Popper phase (C 4 H 9 NH 3 ) 2 PbBr 4 perovskite

On account of the concentration sensitive photoluminescence (PL) property of the lead-based Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase perovskite material, a novel sensing mechanism for highly selective Pb 2+ detection based on the in-situ formation of highly emissive luminescence structure matrix (C 4 H 9 NH 3 ) 2 PbBr 4 has been demonstrated. The sensor exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Pb 2+ in complex metal cations mixture solution. This research reports a novel type of sensor mechanism based on the in-situ formation of luminescent lead-based RP phase perovskite. Here, it paves the way for developing highly selective optical sensors for detecting heavy metal cations via their corresponding luminescence structure matrix.

Wood Carbon Based Single-Atom Catalyst for Rechargeable Zn–Air Batteries

Low-cost and efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) bifunctional electrocatalysts are vital for the applications of rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Given the high catalytic activity of single-atom catalysts (SACs), preparing SACs on a large scale for ZABs is desirable but remains challenging. Herein, in situ formation of single-atom Fe-N-C catalysts on plate wood-based porous carbon is achieved via a facile Lewis acid pretreatment and carbonization process. Lewis acid FeCl3 pretreatment on the cell wall of wood not only produces abundant microchannels but also successfully introduces atomically dispersed Fe-N active species into the hierarchical structure. Such uniformly dispersive SACs on the hierarchical structure enhance the ORR/OER performance and durability. A ZAB using the catalyst in the cathode shows a high power density (70.2 mW cm -2 , at quasi solid state) and long-term stability. This work provides a new path for the large-scale preparation of high-performance SACs.

Neutralizing Antibodies Induced by First-Generation gp41-Stabilized HIV-1 Envelope Trimers and Nanoparticles

Self-assembling protein nanoparticles (NPs) presenting BG505 envelope (Env) trimers can elicit tier 2 HIV-1-neutralizing antibody (NAb) responses more effectively than soluble trimers. In the present study, monoclonal NAbs were isolated from previously immunized mice and rabbits for structural and functional analyses, which revealed that potent mouse NAbs recognize the C3/V4 region and small NP-elicited rabbit NAbs primarily target known glycan holes on BG505 Env.

Effect of Carbon Doping on CO 2 –Reduction Activity of Single Cobalt Sites in Graphitic Carbon Nitride

Single atom catalysts have demonstrated interesting activity in a variety of applications. In this study, we prepared single C o2+ sites on graphitic carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ), which was doped with carbon for enhanced activity in visible-light CO 2 reduction. The synthesized materials were characterized with a variety of techniques, including microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Here, doping C 3 N 4 with carbon was found to have profound effect on the photocatalytic activity of the single Co 2+ sites. At relatively low levels, carbon doping enhanced the photoresponse of C 3 N 4 in the visible region and improved charge separation upon photoactivation, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, high levels of carbon doping were found to be detrimental to the photocatalytic activity of the single Co 2+ sites by altering the structure of C 3 N 4 and generating defect sites responsible for charge recombination.

Catalyst coating of a perovskite film and particles exsoluted from the perovskite film

A hybrid catalyst coating composed of a conformal thin film with exsoluted PrOx nano-particles. The conformal PNM thin film can be a perovskite composition of PrNi0.5Mn0.5O3 (PNM). The PrOx nano-particles dramatically enhance the oxygen reduction reaction kinetics via a high concentration of oxygen vacancies while the thin PNM film effectively suppresses strontium segregation from the cathode of an intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell.

Age-related telomere attrition causes aberrant gene expression in sub-telomeric regions

Telomere attrition has been proposed as a biomarker and causal factor in aging. In addition to causing cellular senescence and apoptosis, telomere shortening has been found to affect gene expression in subtelomeric regions. Here, we analyzed the distribution of age-related differentially expressed genes from the GTEx RNA sequencing database of 54 tissue types from 979 human subjects and found significantly more upregulated than downregulated genes in subtelomeric regions as compared to the genome-wide average. Our data demonstrate spatial relationships between telomeres and gene expression in aging.

An Active and Robust Air Electrode for Reversible Protonic Ceramic Electrochemical Cells

Reversible protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (RPCECs) are a promising option for efficient and low-cost generation of electricity and hydrogen. Commercialization of R-PCECs, however, hinges on the development of highly active and robust air electrodes. Here, we report an air electrode consisting of PrBa 0.8 Ca 0.2 Co 2 O 5+δ and in situ exsolved BaCoO 3–δ nanoparticles (PBCC–BCO) that shows minimal polarization resistance (~0.24 Ω cm 2 at 600 °C) and high stability when exposed to humidified air with 3–50% H 2 O. An R-PCEC utilizing PBCC-BCO demonstrates remarkable performances at 600 °C: achieving a peak power density of 1.06 W cm –2 in the fuel cell mode and a current density of 1.51 A cm –2 at 1.3 V in an electrolysis mode. More importantly, the RPCECs demonstrate an exceptionally high durability over 1833 h of continuous operation in the electrolysis mode. Furthermore, this work offers an efficient approach to design of high-performance and durable electrodes for R-PCECs.

The Encounter of the Parker Solar Probe and a Comet-like Object Near the Sun: Model Predictions and Measurements

The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) aims to explore the nascent solar wind close to the Sun. Meanwhile, PSP is also expected to encounter small objects like comets and asteroids. Here, we survey the ephemerides to find the chance of a recent encounter and then model the interaction between released dusty plasmas and solar wind plasmas. On 2019 September 2, a comet-like object, the 322P/Solar and Heliosphere Observatory, just passed its perihelion flying to a heliocentric distance of 0.12 au and swept by PSP at a relative distance as close as 0.025 au. We present the dynamics of the dust particles released from 322P, forming a curved dust tail. Along the path of PSP in the simulated inner heliosphere, the states of plasma and magnetic field are sampled and illustrated, with the magnetic field sequences from simulation results being compared directly with the in situ measurements from PSP. Through the comparison, we suggest that 322P might be at a deficient activity level releasing limited dusty plasmas on its way to becoming a "rock comet." We also present images of solar wind streamers as recorded by the Wide-field Imager for Solar Probe Plus, showing an indication of dust bombardment for the images superposed with messy trails. We observe from the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph that 322P was transiting from a dimming region to a relatively bright streamer during its perihelion passage, and perform a simulation to confirm that 322P was flying from relatively faster to slower solar wind streams, modifying the local plasma states of the streams.

A constitutive model incorporating grain refinement strengthening on metallic alloys

Surface nano-crystallization techniques have been recently developed as one of the most efficient ways to optimize materials’ structure, and therefore develop the local and global mechanical behavior as to increase strength without compromising ductility. Here, in this work, we present a constitutive model incorporating grain refinement hardening to simulate the nano-crystallization technique, specifically, surface mechanical attrition treatment. The computation is implemented using user-defined VUMAT subroutines. As an example of its application, a geometry model with full coverage of random impacts are employed. The results show that the model has rather precise predictability of grain size evolution during plastic deformation. The readily embedded with a computational code of material dynamics enables this novel model to be a promising tool to study the dynamic evolution of microstructures under plastic deformation.

Atomic/molecular layer deposition for energy storage and conversion

Energy storage and conversion systems, including batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, solar cells, and photoelectrochemical water splitting, have played vital roles in the reduction of fossil fuel usage, addressing environmental issues and the development of electric vehicles. The fabrication and surface/interface engineering of electrode materials with refined structures are indispensable for achieving optimal performances for the different energy-related devices. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) and molecular layer deposition (MLD) techniques, the gas-phase thin film deposition processes with self-limiting and saturated surface reactions, have emerged as powerful techniques for surface and interface engineering in energy-related devices due to their exceptional capability of precise thickness control, excellent uniformity and conformity, tunable composition and relatively low deposition temperature. In the past few decades, ALD and MLD have been intensively studied for energy storage and conversion applications with remarkable progress. In this work, we give a comprehensive summary of the development and achievements of ALD and MLD and their applications for energy storage and conversion, including batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, solar cells, and photoelectrochemical water splitting. Moreover, the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms involved in different devices will be deeply reviewed. Furthermore, the large-scale potential of ALD and MLD techniques is discussed and predicted. Finally, we will provide insightful perspectives on future directions for new material design by ALD and MLD and untapped opportunities in energy storage and conversion.
