De Novo Design of Spiro-Type Hole-Transporting Material: Anisotropic Regulation Toward Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

2,2',7,7'-Tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenyl)-amine-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) represents the state-of-the-art hole-transporting material (HTM) in n-i-p perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, its susceptibility to stability issues has been a long-standing concern. In this study, we embark on a comprehensive exploration of the untapped potential within the family of spiro-type HTMs using an innovative anisotropic regulation strategy. Diverging from conventional approaches that can only modify spirobifluorene with single functional group, this approach allows us to independently tailor the two orthogonal components of the spiro-skeleton at the molecular level. The newly designed HTM, SF-MPA-MCz, features enhanced thermal stability, precise energy level alignment, superior film morphology, and optimized interfacial properties when compared to Spiro-OMeTAD, which contribute to a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.53% for PSCs employing SF-MPA-MCz with substantially improved thermal stability and operational stability. Note that the optimal concentration for SF-MPA-MCz solution is only 30 mg/ml, significantly lower than Spiro-OMeTAD (>70 mg/ml), which could remarkably reduce the cost especially for large-area processing in future commercialization. This work presents a promising avenue for the versatile design of multifunctional HTMs, offering a blueprint for achieving efficient and stable PSCs.

Holey Lamellar High-Entropy Oxide as an Ultra-High-Activity Heterogeneous Catalyst for Solvent-free Aerobic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

The development of noble-metal-free heterogeneous catalysts is promising for selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols; however, the relatively low conversion of non-noble metal catalysts under solvent-free atmospheric conditions hinders their industrial application. Now, a holey lamellar high entropy oxide (HEO) Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Mg 0.2 Zn 0.2 O material with mesoporous structure is prepared by an anchoring and merging process. The HEO has ultra-high catalytic activity for the solvent-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Furthermore, up to 98% conversion can be achieved in only 2 h, to our knowledge, the highest conversion of benzyl alcohol by oxidation to date. By regulating the catalytic reaction parameters, benzoic acid or benzaldehyde can be selectively optimized as the main product. Analytical characterizations and calculations provide a deeper insight into the catalysis mechanism, revealing abundant oxygen vacancies and holey lamellar framework contribute to the ultra-high catalytic activity.

Solvent‐Free Self‐Assembly for Scalable Preparation of Highly Crystalline Mesoporous Metal Oxides

Abstract Mesoporous metal oxides (MMOs) have been demonstrated great potential in various applications. Up to now, the direct synthesis of MMOs is still limited to the solvent induced inorganic‐organic self‐assembly process. Here, we develop a facile, general, and high throughput solvent‐free self‐assembly strategy to synthesize a series of MMOs including single‐component MMOs and multi‐component MMOs (e.g., doped MMOs, composite MMOs, and polymetallic oxide) with high crystallinity and remarkable porous properties by grinding and heating raw materials. Compared with the traditional solution self‐assembly process, the avoidance of solvents in this method not only greatly increases the yield of target products and synthesis efficiency, but also reduces the environmental pollution and the consumption of cost and energy. We believe the presented approach will pave a new avenue for scalable production of advanced mesoporous materials for various applications.

Uncovering Structural Opportunities for Zirconium Metal–Organic Frameworks via Linker Desymmetrization

Abstract The discovery of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) mimicking inorganic minerals with intricate topologies requires elaborate linker design guidelines. Herein, the concept of linker desymmetrization into the design of tetratopic linker based Zr‐MOFs is applied. A series of bent tetratopic linkers with various substituents are utilized to construct Zr‐MOFs with distinct cluster connectivities and topologies. For example, the assembly between a bent linker L‐SO 2 with C 2v symmetry and an 8‐connected Zr 6 cluster leads to the formation of an scu topology, while another flu topology can be obtained by the combination of a novel 8‐connected Zr 6 cluster and a bent linker L‐O with C 1 symmetry. Further utilization of restricted bent linker [(L‐(CH 3 ) 6 )] gives rise to a fascinating (4, 6)‐c cor net, originated from the corundum lattice, with an unprecedented 6‐c Zr 6 cluster. In addition, the removal of toxic selenite ions in aqueous solution is performed by PCN‐903‐(CH 3 ) 6 which exhibits rapid and efficient detoxification. This work uncovers new structural opportunities for Zr‐MOFs via linker desymmetrization and provides novel design strategies for the discovery of sophisticated topologies for practical applications.

Molecular Pivot-Hinge Installation to Evolve Topology in Rare-Earth Metal–Organic Frameworks

Linker desymmetrization has been witnessed as a powerful design strategy for the discovery of highly connected metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with unprecedented topologies. Herein, we introduce molecular pivot-hinge installation as a linker desymmetrization strategy to evolve the topology of highly connected rare-earth (RE) MOFs, where a pivot group is placed in the center of a linker similar to a hinge. By tuning the composition of pivot groups and steric hindrances of the substituents on various linker rotamers, MOFs with various topologies can be obtained. The combination of L-SO 2 with C 2v symmetry and 12-connected RE9 clusters leads to the formation of a fascinating (4,12)-c dfs new topology. Interestingly, when replacing L-SO 2 with a tetrahedra linker L-O, the stacking behaviors of RE-organic layers switch from an eclipsed mode to a staggered stacking mode, leading to the discovery of an intriguing hjz topology. Additionally, the combination of the RE cluster and a linker [(L-(CH 3 ) 6 )] with more bulky groups gives rise to a flu topology with a new 8-c inorganic cluster. The diversity of these RE-MOFs was further enhanced through post-synthetic installation of linkers with various functional groups. Functionalization of each linker with acidic and basic units in the mesoporous RE-based PCN-90-SO 2 allows for efficient cascade catalytic transformation within the functionalized channels.

Catalytic reactions within the cavity of coordination cages

Natural enzymes catalyze reactions in their substrate-binding cavities, exhibiting high specificity and efficiency. In an effort to mimic the structure and functionality of enzymes, discrete coordination cages were designed and synthesized. These self-assembled systems have a variety of confined cavities, which have been applied to accelerate conventional reactions, perform substrate-specific reactions, and manipulate regio- and enantio-selectivity. Many coordination cages or cage–catalyst composites have achieved unprecedented results, outperforming their counterparts in different catalytic reactions. This tutorial review summarizes recent developments of coordination cages across three key approaches to coordination cage catalysis: (1) cavity promoted reactions, (2) embedding of active sites in the structure of the cage, and (3) encapsulation of catalysts within the cage. Special emphasis of the review involves (1) introduction of the structure and property of the coordination cage, (2) discussion of the catalytic pathway mediated by the cage, (3) elucidation of the structure–property relationship between the cage and the designated reaction. This work will summarize the recent progress in supramolecular catalysis and attract more researchers to pursue cavity-promoted reactions using discrete coordination cages.

Space-Confined Polymerization: Controlled Fabrication of Nitrogen-Doped Polymer and Carbon Microspheres with Refined Hierarchical Architectures

The construction of refined architectures plays a crucial role in performance improvement and application expansion of advanced materials. The synthesis of carbon microspheres with a refined hierarchical structure is still a problem in synthetic methodology, because it is difficult to achieve the necessary delicate control of the interior structure and outer shell across the microscale to nanoscale. Nitrogen-doped multichamber carbon (MCC) microspheres with a refined hierarchical structure are realized here via a surfactant-directed space-confined polymerization strategy. The MCC precursor is not the traditional phenolic resol but a new kind of 2,6-diaminopyridine-based multichamber polymer (MCP) with a high nitrogen content up to 20 wt%. The morphology and sizes of MCP microspheres can be easily controlled by a dual-surfactant system. The as-synthesized MCC with a highly microporous shell, a multichamber inner core, and beneficial N-doping can serve as a promising supercapacitor material.
