Perpendicular in-plane negative magnetoresistance in ZrTe 5

The unique band structure in topological materials frequently results in unusual magneto-transport phenomena, one of which is in-plane longitudinal negative magnetoresistance (NMR) with the magnetic field aligned parallel to the electrical current direction. This NMR is widely considered as a hallmark of chiral anomaly in topological materials. Here we report the observation of in-plane NMR in the topological material ZrTe 5 when the in-plane magnetic field is both parallel and perpendicular to the current direction, revealing an unusual case of quantum transport beyond the chiral anomaly. We find that a general theoretical model, which considers the combined effect of Berry curvature and orbital moment, can quantitatively explain this in-plane NMR. In conclusion, our results provide new insights into the understanding of in-plane NMR in topological materials.

Beam Test Results of the RADiCAL—A Radiation Hard Innovative EM Calorimeter

High-performance calorimetry conducted at future hadron colliders, such as the FCC-hh, poses a significant challenge for applying current detector technologies due to unprecedented beam luminosities and radiation fields. Solutions include developing scintillators that are capable of separating events at the sub-fifty picosecond level while also maintaining performance after extreme and constant neutron and ionizing radiation exposure. The radiation-hard innovative calorimeter (RADiCAL) is an approach that incorporates radiation tolerant materials in a sampling “shashlik”-style calorimeter configuration, using quartz capillaries filled with organic liquid or polymer-based wavelength shifters embedded in layers of tungsten plates and lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) crystals. Here, this novel design intends to address the priority research directions (PRD) for calorimetry listed in the DOE basic research needs (BRN) workshop for high energy physics (HEP) instrumentation. Here we report preliminary results from an experimental run at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility (FTBF) in June 2022. These tests demonstrate that the RADiCAL concept is capable of ¡50 ps timing resolution.

RADiCAL—Precision Timing, Ultracompact, Radiation-Hard Electromagnetic Calorimetry

To address the challenges of providing high-performance calorimetry in future hadron collider experiments under conditions of high luminosity and high radiation (FCC-hh environments), we conducted R&D on advanced calorimetry techniques suitable for such operation, based on scintillation and wavelength-shifting technologies and photosensor (SiPM and SiPM-like) technology. In particular, we focused our attention on ultra-compact radiation-hard EM calorimeters based on modular structures (RADiCAL modules) consisting of alternating layers of the very dense absorber and scintillating plates, read out via radiation hard wavelength shifting (WLS) solid fiber or capillary elements to photosensors positioned either proximately or remotely, depending upon their radiation tolerance. RADiCAL modules provide the capability to measure simultaneously and with high precision the position, energy and timing of EM showers. This paper provides an overview of the instrumentation and photosensor R&D associated with the RADiCAL program.

Thermal transport properties and some hydrodynamic-like behavior in three-dimensional topological semimetal $\mathrm{ZrTe}_5$

We report hydrodynamic fluidity in condensed matter physics has been experimentally demonstrated only in a limited number of compounds due to the stringent conditions that must be met. Herein, we performed thermal and electrical transport experiments in three-dimensional topological semimetal ZrTe 5 . By measuring the thermal properties in a wide temperature range, two representative experimental evidences of the hydrodynamics are observed in temperature window between the ballistic and diffusive regimes: a faster evolution of the thermal conductivity than in the ballistic regime and the non-monotonic temperature-dependent effective quasiparticle mean-free-path. In addition, magneto-thermal conductivity results indicate that charged quasiparticles, as well as phonons, may also play an important role in this hydrodynamic-like flow in ZrTe 5 .

Crossover behavior in the magnetoresistance of thin flakes of the topological material ZrTe 5

ZrTe 5 is a layered material that exhibits intricate topological effects. Intensive theoretically and experimental efforts have been devoted to try to understand the physics in this materials. In this paper the temperature dependent magneto-transport properties of ZrTe 5 thin flakes are investigated. A characteristic temperature T* is observed in the temperature dependence of three different types of magnetoresistance simultaneously, which are the saturated Hall anomaly, the chiral anomaly and the longitudinal magnetoresistance. Furthermore, the value of T* decreases monotonically from 200K to 160K with increasing thickness of the ZrTe 5 thin flakes from 42nm to 89nm. Temperature induced topological phase transitions are attributed to the cause of such anomaly in the three types of magnetoresistance at T*. Overall, our findings provide a multi-parameter indicator for the emergence of topological phase transition in ZrTe 5 and could be extended to the study of other topological materials. The temperature dependence of the three types of magnetoresistance also shed light on the role of anomalous Hall Effect in the transport properties of ZrTe 5 .

UV–Visible reflectance of common light reflectors and their degradation after an ionization dose up to 100 Mrad

We report light reflectors are widely used to enhance scintillation light collection. Their enhancement level depends on the reflector’s reflectance at the scintillator’s emission wavelength. We report UV–Visible reflectance spectra, relative to BaSO 4 , for several common reflectors. Also reported is their radiation hardness against an ionization dose up to 100 Mrad. The results of this investigation provide a reference for applications of these reflectors in a severe radiation environment.

Activation and surface reactions of CO and H 2 on ZnO powders and nanoplates under CO hydrogenation reaction conditions

Here, activation and surface reactions of CO and H 2 on ZnO powders and nanoplates under CO hydrogenation reaction conditions were (quasi) in situ studied using temperature programmed surface reaction spectra, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance. CO undergoes disproportion reaction to produce gaseous CO 2 and surface carbon adatoms, and adsorbs to form surface formate species. H 2 adsorption forms dominant irreversibly-adsorbed surface hydroxyl groups and interstitial H species and very minor surface Zn-H species. Surface formate species and hydroxyl groups react to produce CO 2 and H 2 , while surface carbon adatoms are hydrogenated by surface Zn-H species sequentially to produce CH(a), CH 2 (a), CH 3 (a) and eventually gaseous CH 4 . The ZnO nanoplates, exposing a higher fraction of Zn-ZnO(0001) and O-ZnO(000–1) polar facets, are more active than the ZnO powders to catalyze CO hydrogenation to CH 4 . These results provide fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanisms and structural effects of CO hydrogenation reaction catalyzed by ZnO-based catalysts.
