Electron Backscattered Diffraction Study of Microstructural Evolution During Isothermal Deformation of High-N Mn18Cr18 Alloy

In order to understand the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanism of Mn18Cr18N austenitic stainless steel during hot deformation, the investigation of microstructure evolution is significant. Isothermal compression tests were conducted on a Gleeble-3500 thermomechanical simulator in the temperature range of 950 °C to 1150 °C and strain rate range between 0.001 and 1 s{sup −1}. Optical microscopy (OM) and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) were employed to study the resultant microstructures. More grain boundary information of hot-deformed specimens was provided by EBSD. It was found that the fraction of low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) increases with the decrease of deformation temperature or the increase of strain rate and can be expressed as a function of the Zener–Hollomon parameter. DRX easily occurs at the high deformation temperature and low strain rate. From the flow stress curves, the occurrence of single peak behavior and multiple transient steady-state (MTSS) behavior illustrated the existence of different DRX mechanisms. The EBSD analysis indicated that both continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) existed during hot deformation. For the low fraction of 10 to 15 deg misorientation, CDRX is the minor DRX mechanism while DDRX is the major DRX mechanism for the studied steel.

Traditional Chinese medication Tongxinluo attenuates apoptosis in ox-LDL-stimulated macrophages by enhancing Beclin-1-induced autophagy

Highlights: • TXL attenuates ox-LDL-impaired apoptosis in THP-1 macrophages. • TXL attenuates ox-LDL-impaired apoptosis in THP-1 macrophages by enhancing autophagy. • TXL treatment inhibits macrophage apoptosis by enhancing macrophage autophagy in advanced atherosclerotic plaques. • TXL stabilizes atherosclerotic plaques by attenuating macrophage apoptosis and enhancing Beclin-1-induced autophagy. In advanced atherosclerosis, a large number of necrotic core increases plaque vulnerability, which leads to the occurrence of acute atherothrombotic cardiovascular events. Macrophage apoptosis plays an important role in secondary necrosis. The present study aimed to examine and describe the effect of the traditional Chinese medication Tongxinluo (TXL) on macrophage apoptosis in advanced atherosclerotic plaques and to explore its mechanism. By observing the effect of TXL on ox-LDL-stimulated macrophage apoptosis, it was shown that TXL significantly inhibited ox-LDL-induced apoptosis of macrophages by enhancing autophagy. Therapeutic mechanism of TXL included increasing the expression of Beclin-1 and improving the dissociation of Bcl-2-Beclin-1 Complex. Apolipoprotein E knockout (apoE−/−) mice with a high fat diet were divided into four groups: saline group (Saline gavage), low dose TXL group (0.38 g/kg/d, gavage), medium dose TXL group (0.75 g/kg/day, gavage), and high dose TXL group (1.5 g/kg/day, gavage). 4 weeks after carotid-artery surgery, lentiviral of Beclin-1 silencing was injected through the tail vein. TXL treatment significantly reduced macrophage apoptosis dose-dependently and the result was blocked by Beclin-1 silencing. In addition, the increased Lc3b dots by TXL almost localized to macrophages in advanced atherosclerotic plaque. Compared with the same dose of TXL shBeclin-1 group, plaque area and vulnerability index of TXL groups decreased. The anti-apoptosis effects of TXL on atherosclerosis was related to the improvement of autophagy via Beclin-1.

Hot Ductility and Compression Deformation Behavior of TRIP980 at Elevated Temperatures

The hot ductility tests of a kind of 980 MPa class Fe-0.31C (wt pct) TRIP steel (TRIP980) with the addition of Ti/V/Nb were conducted on a Gleeble-3500 thermomechanical simulator in the temperatures ranging from 873 K to 1573 K (600 °C to 1300 °C) at a constant strain rate of 0.001 s{sup −1}. It is found that the hot ductility trough ranges from 873 K to 1123 K (600 °C to 850 °C). The recommended straightening temperatures are from 1173 K to 1523 K (900 °C to 1250 °C). The isothermal hot compression deformation behavior was also studied by means of Gleeble-3500 in the temperatures ranging from 1173 K to 1373 K (900 °C to 1100 °C) at strain rates ranging from 0.01 s{sup −1} to 10 s{sup −1}. The results show that the peak stress decreases with the increasing temperature and the decreasing strain rate. The deformation activation energy of the test steel is 436.7 kJ/mol. The hot deformation equation of the steel has been established, and the processing maps have been developed on the basis of experimental data and the principle of dynamic materials model (DMM). By analyzing the processing maps of strains of 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9, it is found that dynamic recrystallization occurs in the peak power dissipation efficiency domain, which is the optimal area of hot working. Finally, the factors influencing hot ductility and thermal activation energy of the test steel were investigated by means of microscopic analysis. It indicates that the additional microalloying elements play important roles both in the loss of hot ductility and in the enormous increase of deformation activation energy for the TRIP980 steel.

Multifunctional Characteristics of Carbon Nanotube (CNT) Yarn Composites

By forming composite structures with Carbon Nanotube (CNT) yarns we achieve materials capable of measuring strain and composite structures with increased mechanical strength. The CNT yarns used are of the 2-ply and 4-ply variety with the yarns having diameters of about 15-30 micrometers. The strain sensing characteristics of the yarns are investigated on test beams with the yarns arranged in a bridge configuration. Additionally, the strain sensing properties are also investigated on yarns embedded on the surface of a flexible membrane. Initial mechanical strength tests also show an increase in the modulus of elasticity of the composite materials while incurring a weight penalty of less than one-percent. Also presented are initial temperature characterizations of the yarns.
