Analyzing Residential Charging Demand for Light-Duty Electric Vehicles in Colorado: Preprint

The past decade has witnessed the rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). The momentum is expected to continue with strong support from the government and industry. Rapid EV adoption brings significant charging demand to the power grid, causing additional stress and non-negligible risks to the already-aging power grid. To help power grid operators understand the impacts of EV home charging on the grid and identify risk factors, this study presents a data-driven residential charging demand analysis for light-duty vehicles. This study considers two real-world grid service regions in Colorado and merges multiple data sources and state-of-the-art tools that characterize EV adoption projections, vehicle travel patterns, seasonal variations, residential charging accessibility, ambient temperature impact, EV charging behaviors, grid utility customers, vehicle registration, and household-level EV charging demand distribution. We characterize potential residential charging demand in 2030 for two regions within the state of Colorado: Boulder and Aurora. We project that EVs will be 26% of the light-duty vehicle population in Boulder and 16% in Aurora. Charging demand is characterized for ten power grid feeders (five for each study region). Across the ten feeders, peak total EV charging powers during wintertime range from less than 1 MW to more than 4 MW.

Electric Vehicles at Scale (EVs@Scale) Laboratory Consortium Deep-Dive Technical Meeting: May 18, 2023

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Electric Vehicles at Scale Laboratory Consortium (EVs@Scale Lab Consortium) is accelerating research to support the establishment of a secure and scalable national network of charging infrastructure. Critical to this effort is an understanding of the potential grid impacts of EV charging and possible smart charge management (SCM) or vehicle-grid integration (VGI) capabilities that could mitigate these impacts. The EVs@Scale SCM/VGI Pillar is analyzing the impacts of EV charging and developing and demonstrating the capabilities of both SCM and VGI with many different vehicle use cases and grid scenarios. This Deep Dive Discussion from year 2 of the project encompasses the progress and future plans for the analysis components of the FUSE (Flexible charging to Unify the grid and transportation Sectors for Evs at scale) project.

The effect of ambient ozone exposure on three types of diabetes: a meta-analysis

Background: Ozone as an air pollutant is gradually becoming a threat to people's health. However, the effect of ozone exposure on risk of developing diabetes, a fast-growing global metabolic disease, remains controversial. Objective: To evaluate the impact of ambient ozone exposure on the incidence rate of type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes mellitus. Method: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases before July 9, 2022, to determine relevant literature. Data were extracted after quality evaluation according to the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) and the agency for healthcare research and quality (AHRQ) standards, and a meta-analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between ozone exposure and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The heterogeneity test, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias were performed using Stata 16.0. Results: Our search identified 667 studies from three databases, 19 of which were included in our analysis after removing duplicate and ineligible studies. Among the remaining studies, three were on T1D, five were on T2D, and eleven were on GDM. The result showed that ozone exposure was positively correlated with T2D [effect size (ES) = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.11] and GDM [pooled odds ratio (OR) = 1.01, 95% CI: 1.00, 1.03]. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that ozone exposure in the first trimester of pregnancy might raise the risk of GDM. However, no significant association was observed between ozone exposure and T1D. Conclusion: Long-term exposure to ozone may increase the risk of T2D, and daily ozone exposure during pregnancy was a hazard factor for developing GDM. Decreasing ambient ozone pollution may reduce the burden of both diseases.

A Novel Data Segmentation Method for Data-driven Phase Identification

This paper presents a smart meter phase identification algorithm for two cases: meter-phase-label-known and meter-phase-label-unknown. To improve the identification accuracy, a data segmentation method is proposed to exclude data segments that are collected when the voltage correlation between smart meters on the same phase is weakened. Then, using the selected data segments, a hierarchical clustering method is used to calculate the correlation distances and cluster the smart meters. If the phase labels are unknown, a Connected-Triple-based Similarity (CTS) method is adapted to further improve the phase identification accuracy of the ensemble clustering method. The methods are developed and tested on both synthetic and real feeder data sets. Here, simulation results show that the proposed phase identification algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in both accuracy and robustness.
