Pressure‐Induced Metallization and Isostructural Transitions in 3R‐MoS2

At ambient conditions 3R-polytypes of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) demonstrate fascinating properties because of their unique layer stacking. Understanding the structure-property relationship is essential for the realization of their use in spintronic, valleytronic, and optoelectronic applications. Herein, after the high pressure-temperature synthesis of 3R-MoS2 in a large volume cubic press, a concomitant experimental and theoretical high-pressure study of 3R-MoS2 is reported, leading to the discovery of pressure-induced reversible isostructural phase transitions without symmetry breaking. Concurrent with the isostructural transitions, a semiconductor-to-metal transition is observed, owing to strong interlayer interaction and charge redistribution across the van der Waals gap under pressure. The pressure-induced enhancement of interlayer interactions together with the robust intrinsic layer stacking in 3R-MoS2 prevent the layers from sliding under pressure and hinder a corresponding volume collapse. This study on continuous pressure-tuning of crystal and electronic structure in 3R-MoS2 will play a vital role in developing the next-generation devices involving coupling of structural, optical, and electrical properties of 3R-polytypes of TMDs and other layered materials.

High pressure structural and lattice dynamics study of α-In2Se3

Layered α-In2Se3 has been studied using a combined in situ synchrotron angle-dispersive powder x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy study in a diamond anvil cell up to 60+ GPa, at room temperature. Helium, which remains fairly hydrostatic up to the highest pressure in this study, was used as the pressure-transmitting medium. The results from both experimental methods reveal a pressure-induced structural phase transition from α-In2Se3 to a monoclinic β'-In2Se3 structure at ≈1 GPa, in agreement with previous studies. Based on our detailed measurements using both experimental techniques and the F-f formalism, the β'-In2Se3 structure remains stable up to 45 GPa, without a clear indication of a phase transition toward the previously reported β-In2Se3 phase. Above this pressure, In2Se3 adopts a disordered solid-solution-like orthorhombic structure, phase IV. The results are discussed in comparison with the relevant previous studies of α-In2Se3 under pressure.

Techno-economic analysis of synthetic fuel production from existing nuclear power plants across the United States

Abstract Low carbon synfuel can reduce dependence on fossil fuels like diesel and jet fuel, and, with large-scale cost-effective production, contribute to global transportation sector decarbonization, Simultaneously, nuclear power plants are struggling economically due to falling wholesale electricity prices. Converting existing nuclear plants for synfuel production could preserve these low-carbon assets and enable large-scale synfuel production, yet no comprehensive technoeconomic analysis exists. This study evaluates the potential of integrating synthetic fuel production with five US nuclear plants, considering electricity and fuel markets and carbon dioxide source access. Such integration could enhance nuclear plant profitability by up to $792 million and offer a 10% return on investment over 20 years. The hydrogen production tax credit from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act is crucial, comprising 75% of revenues on average. Carbon feedstock transportation has the highest cost at 35%, followed closely by synfuel production capital costs. Incentive policies are thus key for the decarbonization of the transportation sector and the economic importance of the geographic location of Integrated Energy Systems.

Strong Surface-Enhanced Coherent Phonon Generation in van der Waals Materials

Terahertz (THz) coherent phonons have emerged as promising candidates for the next generation of high-speed, low-energy information carriers in atomically thin phononic or phonon-integrated on-chip devices. However, effectively manipulating THz coherent phonons remains a significant challenge. Here, in this study, we investigated THz coherent phonon generation in exfoliated van der Waals (vdW) flakes of Fe 3 GeTe 2 , Fe 5 GeTe 2 , and FePS 3 . We successfully generated the THz A 1g coherent phonon mode in these vdW flakes. An innovative approach involved partially exfoliating vdW flakes on a gold substrate and partially on a silicon (Si) substrate to compare the THz coherent phonon generation between both sides. Interestingly, we observed a significantly enhanced THz coherent phonon in the vdW/gold area compared with that in the vdW/Si area. Frequency-domain Raman mapping across the vdW flakes corroborated these findings. Numerical simulations further indicated a stronger enhanced surface field in vdW/gold structures than in vdW/Si structures. Consequently, we attribute the observed enhancement in THz coherent phonon generation to the increased surface field on the gold substrate. This enhancement was consistent across the three different vdW materials studied, suggesting the universality of this strategy. Our results hold promise for advancing the design of THz phononic and phonon-integrated devices.

Thermally Driven Catch-and-Release of CoCl 2

A heat-driven catch-and-release strategy for CoCl 2 capture is described. It is based on the use of an immobilized neutral dicyclohexylacetamide-based receptor L supported on polystyrene (PS-L). An X-ray diffraction analysis of a single crystal of L·CoCl 2 revealed an ion-pair complex comprising a hexacoordinated cobalt cation [L·Co] 2+ and a tetrachlorocobaltate anion [CoCl 4 ] 2– . Temperature dependent binding was seen, as inferred from UV–vis spectroscopic studies. Fits to the van’t Hoff equation yielded values of ΔH° = 12.4 kJ/mol and ΔS° = 56.0 J/K·mol for L + CoCl2, and ΔH° = 16.5 kJ/mol and ΔS° = 85.0 J/K·mol for PS-L + CoCl 2 in 95% ethanol. Consequently, cobalt capture and release are mediated by heating and cooling, respectively. The material PS-L exhibits a preference for binding cobalt over manganese and nickel as inferred from Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm analyses that revealed binding constants of KLF = 88.5 M –1 for CoCl 2 , 52.7 M –1 for MnCl 2 , and 49.7 M –1 for NiCl 2 . In a simulated ion mixture containing equimolar CoCl 2 , MnCl 2 , and NiCl 2 , ICP-MS analyses served to confirm that cobalt was selectively enriched to 52 mol % (from an initial level of ca. 32 mol %) after one catch-and-release cycle and 76.6% after three cycles. Our experimental results were validated by density functional theory calculations, which also show stronger binding of Co over Mn and Ni to L.

Benchmarking machine learning strategies for phase-field problems

Abstract We present a comprehensive benchmarking framework for evaluating machine-learning approaches applied to phase-field problems. This framework focuses on four key analysis areas crucial for assessing the performance of such approaches in a systematic and structured way. Firstly, interpolation tasks are examined to identify trends in prediction accuracy and accumulation of error over simulation time. Secondly, extrapolation tasks are also evaluated according to the same metrics. Thirdly, the relationship between model performance and data requirements is investigated to understand the impact on predictions and robustness of these approaches. Finally, systematic errors are analyzed to identify specific events or inadvertent rare events triggering high errors. Quantitative metrics evaluating the local and global description of the microstructure evolution, along with other scalar metrics representative of phase-field problems, are used across these four analysis areas. This benchmarking framework provides a path to evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of machine-learning strategies applied to phase-field problems, ultimately facilitating their practical application.

Efficient Optical Control of Magnon Dynamics in van der Waals Ferromagnets

Optical control of magnons in two-dimensional (2D) materials promises new functionalities for spintronics and magnonics in atomically thin devices. Here, we report control of magnon dynamics, using laser polarization, in a ferromagnetic van der Waals (vdW) material, Fe 3.6 Co 1.4 GeTe 2 . The magnon amplitude, frequency, and lifetime are controlled and monitored by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. We show substantial (over 25%) and continuous modulation of magnon dynamics as a function of incident laser polarization. Our results suggest that the modification of the effective demagnetization field and magnetic anisotropy by the pump laser pulses with different polarizations is due to anisotropic optical absorption. This implies that pump laser pulses modify the local spin environment, which enables the launch of magnons with tunable dynamics. Our first-principles calculations confirm the anisotropic optical absorption of different crystal orientations. Our findings suggest a new route for the development of opto-spintronic or opto-magnonic devices.
