Notable Contributions of Aerosols to the Predictability of Hail Precipitation

There is an increasing concern of the uncertainty produced by aerosols in forecasting precipitation including hail precipitation. This study provides an assessment of the uncertainties in hail and total precipitation by varying initial cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) number concentration (CCNC) and meteorological conditions based on 1200 cloud-resolving simulations of an idealized hailstorm. Although the meteorological perturbations produce large uncertainties in hail precipitation (including rate and maximum hail size) as well as total precipitation, varying CCNC by an order of magnitude can cause even larger uncertainties, especially pairing with the thermodynamics perturbation (i.e., potential temperature and water vapor). Changing CCNC modifies the predictability of hail precipitation, with a higher predictability in moderate polluted environments compared with the very clean and polluted environments. Increasing CCNC consistently leads a non-monotonic response of ensemble mean with an optimal CCNC for hail precipitation but a monotonic decreasing response of total precipitation with the various meteorological perturbations, meaning the initial meteorological perturbations does not qualitatively change the aerosol effects. Investigation with 10-fold reduced initial perturbation further supports the large CCN effects are not dependent of metrological perturbations. The findings suggest the importance of considering CCN effects in severe weather simulations and forecasting.

Flexible and high-performance electrochromic devices enabled by self-assembled 2D TiO 2 /MXene heterostructures

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are promising electrochromic (EC) materials for applications such as smart windows and displays, yet the challenge still exists to achieve good flexibility, high coloration efficiency and fast response simultaneously. MXenes (e.g. Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and their derived TMOs (e.g. 2D TiO 2 ) are good candidates for high-performance and flexible EC devices because of their 2D nature and the possibility of assembling them into loosely networked structures. Here we demonstrate flexible, fast, and high-coloration-efficiency EC devices based on self-assembled 2D TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructures, with the Ti 3 C 2 T x layer as the transparent electrode, and the 2D TiO 2 layer as the EC layer. Benefiting from the well-balanced porosity and connectivity of these assembled nanometer-thick heterostructures, they present fast and efficient ion and electron transport, as well as superior mechanical and electrochemical stability. We further demonstrate large-area flexible devices which could potentially be integrated onto curved and flexible surfaces for future ubiquitous electronics.

A Climatology and Extreme Value Analysis of Large Hail in China

In this paper, hail size records are analyzed at 2254 stations in China and a hail size climatology is developed based on gridded hail observations for the period 1960–2015. It is found that the annual percentiles of hail size records changed sharply and national-wide after 1980, therefore two periods, 1960–79 and 1980–2015, are studied. There are some similarities between the two periods in terms of the characteristics of hail size such as the spatial distribution patterns of mean annual maximum hail size and occurrence week of annual maximum hail size. The 1980–2015 period had higher observation density than the 1960–79 period, but showed smaller mean annual maximum hail size, especially in northern China. In the majority of grid boxes, the annual maximum hail size experienced a decreasing trend during the 1980–2015 period. A Gumbel extreme value model is fitted to each grid box to estimate the return periods of maximum hail size. The scale and location parameter of the fitted Gumbel distributions are higher in eastern China than in western China, thereby reflecting a greater likelihood of large hail in eastern China. In southern China, the maximum hail size exceeds 127 mm for a 10-yr return period, whereas in northern China maximum hail size exceeds this threshold for a 50-yr return period. Furthermore, the Gumbel model is found to potentially underestimate the maximum hail size for certain return periods, but provides a more informed picture of the spatial distribution of extreme hail size and the regional differences.
