Noncentrosymmetric Nowotny Chimney Ladder Ferromagnet Cr 4 Ge 7 with a High Curie Temperature of ~207 K

Noncentrosymmetric magnets usually host intriguing magnetic interactions inherent in the crystal structure with broken inversion symmetry, which can give rise to rich magnetic behaviors. Here, we report herein the high-pressure synthesis, crystal structure, magnetizations, and magnetic structure of a so-called Nowotny chimney ladder compound Cr 4 Ge 7 . Our analysis on the powder neutron diffraction data revises the crystal structure as a noncentrosymmetric space group (P4̅c2, No. 116). It exhibits two magnetic orders within the temperature range of 2–400 K. The first order at ~207 K associated with a small magnetic moment of ~0.75 μ B is assigned to a commensurate ferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0). The weak itinerant ferromagnet nature should be caused by the complex Cr spin orders from different Wyckoff positions. The second order-like behavior at ~18 K is assumed to arise from a competition between the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya and Heisenberg interactions. The results provide an excellent platform for the study of intricate interactions among various magnetic exchanges as well as for the exploration of high-temperature exotic magnetic properties.

Electronic origin of half-metal to semiconductor transition and colossal magnetoresistance in spinel HgCr 2 Se 4

Half metals are ferromagnets hosting spin-polarized conducting carriers and are crucial for spintronics applications. The chromium spinel HgCr 2 Se 4 represents a unique type of half-metal, which features a half-metal to semiconductor transition (HMST) and exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) across the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic (FM-PM) transition. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find that the Fermi surface of n-type HgCr 2 Se 4 (n–HgCr 2 Se 4 ) consists of a single electron pocket which moves above the Fermi level (E F ) upon the FM-PM transition, leading to the HMST. Such a Lifshitz transition manifests a giant band splitting which originates from the exchange interaction unveiled with a specific chemical nonstoichiometry. The exchange band splitting and the chemical nonstoichiometry are two key ingredients to the HMST and CMR, consistent with our ab initio calculation. Our findings provide spectroscopic evidence of the electronic origin of the anomalous properties of HgCr 2 Se 4 , which address the unique phase transition in half-metals.

Visualizing Tailored Spin Phenomena in a Reduced‐Dimensional Topological Superlattice

Abstract Emergent topological insulators (TIs) and their design are in high demand for manipulating and transmitting spin information toward ultralow‐power‐consumption spintronic applications. Here, distinct topological states with tailored spin properties can be achieved in a single reduced‐dimensional TI‐superlattice, (Bi 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 )‐(Bi 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 ) N or (□/Bi 2 Se 3 )‐(Bi 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 ) N ( N is the repeating unit, □ represents an empty layer) by controlling the termination via molecular beam epitaxy. The Bi 2 ‐terminated superlattice exhibits a single Dirac cone with a spin momentum splitting ≈0.5 Å −1 , producing a pronounced inverse Edelstein effect with a coherence length up to 1.26 nm. In contrast, the Bi 2 Se 3 ‐terminated superlattice is identified as a dual TI protected by coexisting time reversal and mirror symmetries, showing an unexpectedly long spin lifetime up to 1 ns. The work elucidates the key role of dimensionality and dual topological phases in selecting desired spin properties, suggesting a promise route for engineering topological superlattices for high‐performance TI‐spintronic devices.
