Cloud-Based Demonstration of the Eastern Interconnection Situational Awareness Monitoring System (ESAMS)

This report describes a cloud-based implementation and field demonstration of the Eastern Interconnection Situational Awareness and Monitoring System (ESAMS). ESAMS was developed to support the detection and source localization of forced oscillations using synchrophasor measurements from tie-lines connecting areas served by different reliability coordinators (RCs), so that RCs could better coordinate their response to wide-area events. A previous effort had identified deployment barriers associated with hosting shared situational awareness tools at a single RC. To address these barriers, ESAMS was migrated to Amazon Web Services and evaluated in a six-month field demonstration. ISO New England (ISO-NE) and PJM streamed data to the platform using AWS Direct Connect and a site-to-site VPN, respectively. The resulting multi-utility measurement footprint enabled regional source localization across major portions of the U.S. Eastern Interconnection and supported routine identification of oscillation events. During the final three months of the trial, 24 events above 2 MW/MVAR were detected. The largest detected oscillation approached a 25 MW peak-to-peak amplitude, and the longest persisted intermittently for more than 11 hours. The demonstration also assessed operational considerations—including data transfer volumes, end-to-end latency, and cloud computing costs—and found that network and compute requirements were modest relative to typical cloud capabilities while providing performance comparable to prior on-premises deployments. Overall, the results indicate that cloud hosting can provide a practical path to shared interconnection-wide oscillation monitoring. The cloud ESAMS demonstration establishes a foundation for broader utility participation and for building future wide-area analytics that leverage measurements across organizational boundaries.

Tuning polymer-backbone coplanarity and conformational order to achieve high-performance printed all-polymer solar cells

Abstract All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) offer improved morphological and mechanical stability compared with those containing small-molecule-acceptors (SMAs). They can be processed with a broader range of conditions, making them desirable for printing techniques. In this study, we report a high-performance polymer acceptor design based on bithiazole linker (PY-BTz) that are on par with SMAs. We demonstrate that bithiazole induces a more coplanar and ordered conformation compared to bithiophene due to the synergistic effect of non-covalent backbone planarization and reduced steric encumbrances. As a result, PY-BTz shows a significantly higher efficiency of 16.4% in comparison to the polymer acceptors based on commonly used thiophene-based linkers (i.e., PY-2T, 9.8%). Detailed analyses reveal that this improvement is associated with enhanced conjugation along the backbone and closer interchain π-stacking, resulting in higher charge mobilities, suppressed charge recombination, and reduced energetic disorder. Remarkably, an efficiency of 14.7% is realized for all-PSCs that are solution-sheared in ambient conditions, which is among the highest for devices prepared under conditions relevant to scalable printing techniques. This work uncovers a strategy for promoting backbone conjugation and planarization in emerging polymer acceptors that can lead to superior all-PSCs.

Tuning the Mobility of Indacenodithiophene-Based Conjugated Polymers via Coplanar Backbone Engineering

Conjugated polymers based on indacenodithiophene-benzothiadiazole (IDT-BT) have attracted great interest due to their high charge carrier mobilities while being low crystallinity (i.e. near-amorphous.) They represent a promising design strategy to achieve both excellent stretchability and electrical performance. Here, we describe an approach on structural modifications of IDT-BT, namely by introducing non-covalent interactions and substituting building blocks to promote extended coplanar backbones. We systematically investigated the effects of structural modifications on backbone conformation, polymer aggregations, and charge carrier mobilities. Among the investigated polymers, the fluorinated derivative IDT-FBT demonstrated the highest charge carrier mobility of 5.19 cm 2 /Vs, along with low activation energy and Urbach energy indicating its low energy disorder level. The high mobility was attributed to the higher backbone planarity reinforced by S···F and H···F non-covalent interactions and improved interchain interactions through strong aggregation. In conclusion, our findings indicate that increasing backbone coplanarity may further improve mobility in low crystallinity conjugated polymers.

Real-time correlation of crystallization and segmental order in conjugated polymers

Modulating the segmental order in the morphology of conjugated polymers is widely recognized as a crucial factor for achieving optimal electronic properties and mechanical deformability. However, it is worth noting that the segmental order is typically associated with the crystallization process, which can result in rigid and brittle long-range ordered crystalline domains. To precisely control the morphology, a comprehensive understanding of how highly anisotropic conjugated polymers form segmentally ordered structures with ongoing crystallization is essential, yet currently elusive. To fill this knowledge gap, we developed a novel approach with a combination of stage-type fast scanning calorimetry and micro-Raman spectroscopy to capture the series of specimens with a continuum in the polymer percent crystallinity and detect the segmental order in real-time. Through the investigation of conjugated polymers with different backbones and side-chain structures, we observed a generally existing phenomenon that the degree of segmental order saturates before the maximum crystallinity is achieved. This disparity allows the conjugated polymers to achieve good charge carrier mobility while retaining good segmental dynamic mobility through the tailored treatment. Moreover, the crystallization temperature to obtain optimal segmental order can be predicted based on T g and T m of conjugated polymers. In conclusion, this in-depth characterization study provides fundamental insights into the evolution of segmental order during crystallization, which can aid in designing and controlling the optoelectronic and mechanical properties of conjugated polymers.

A Multi-Qubit Quantum Gate Using the Zeno Effect

The Zeno effect, in which repeated observation freezes the dynamics of a quantum system, stands as an iconic oddity of quantum mechanics. When a measurement is unable to distinguish between states in a subspace, the dynamics within that subspace can be profoundly altered, leading to non-trivial behavior. Here we show that such a measurement can turn a non-interacting system with only single-qubit control into a two- or multi-qubit entangling gate, which we call a Zeno gate. The gate works by imparting a geometric phase on the system, conditioned on it lying within a particular nonlocal subspace. We derive simple closed-form expressions for the gate fidelity under a number of non-idealities and show that the gate is viable for implementation in circuit and cavity QED systems. More specifically, we illustrate the functioning of the gate via dispersive readout in both the Markovian and non-Markovian readout regimes, and derive conditions for longitudinal readout to ideally realize the gate.

Highly Deformable Rigid Glassy Conjugated Polymeric Thin Films

Wearable devices benefit from the use of stretchable conjugated polymers (CPs). Traditionally, the design of stretchable CPs is based on the assumption that a low elastic modulus (E) is crucial for achieving high stretchability. However, this research, which analyzes the mechanical properties of 65 CP thin films, challenges this notion. It is discovered that softness alone does not determine stretchability; rather, it is the degree of entanglement that is critical. This means that rigid CPs can also exhibit high stretchability, contradicting conventional wisdom. To inverstigate further, the mechanical behavior, electrical properties, and deformation mechanism of two model CPs: a glassy poly(3-butylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3BT) with an E of 2.2 GPa and a viscoelastic poly(3-octylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3OT) with an E of 86 MPa, are studied. Ex situ transmission X-ray scattering and polarized UV–vis spectroscopy revealed that only the initial strain (i.e., <20%) exhibits different chain alignment mechanisms between two polymers, while both rigid and soft P3ATs showed similarly behavior at larger strains. In conclusion, by challenging the conventional design metric of low E for high stretchability and highlighting the importance of entanglement, it is hoped to broaden the range of CPs available for use in wearable devices.

Shear-aligned large-area organic semiconductor crystals through extended π–π interaction

Small molecule-based organic semiconductors are of broad interest in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) due to their potential for high crystallinity and electrical performance. The 2D molecule, TIPS-peri-pentacenopentacene (TIPS-PPP), which is the vertical extension of the 1D TIPS-pentacene (TIPS-PEN) molecule, offers a lower bandgap, higher aromaticity, and an enhanced π–π interaction with neighboring molecules in the solid state when compared to TIPS-PEN. However, an in-depth understanding of the relationship between the molecule structure, solid-state molecular packing, and the electronic properties has not been reported due to poor control over the TIPS-PPP crystallite size. In this work, we successfully engineered highly oriented large-area TIPS-PPP crystals through the solution shear coating technique. Additionally, compared with narrow ribbon-like TIPS-PEN crystals, TIPS-PPP crystals can grow centimeters long and over 500 μm wide. TIPS-PPP molecules are less susceptible to forming metastable polymorphs than TIPS-PEN molecules upon fast evaporation. The crystal structure of TIPS-PPP is also thermally stable at 250 °C. Notably, the anisotropic charge carrier mobility of TIPS-PPP crystals is resolved through fabricating bottom-gate top-contact devices, with a hole mobility of 3.1 cm 2 V -1 s -1 along the preferred packing direction. Further device optimization using top-gate bottom-contact devices improved the mobility up to 6.5 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , which is among the highest for pentacene-derivative-based organic semiconductors.
