Effects of Ionizing Radiation on the Thermodynamic Stability of Boehmite and Gibbsite

Here, in this study, we examined the effect of gamma radiation on the stabilities of aluminum hydroxide (gibbsite) and aluminum oxyhydroxide (boehmite) nanoparticles in relation to their thermal decomposition. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed no significant differences in mineral components or morphology before and after radiation. However, thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC) analyses showed that both boehmite and gibbsite nanoparticles experienced decreased mass loss following irradiation. Raman and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transfer infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra indicated that a fraction of the hydroxyl content in both cases was selectively cleaved by radiation, primarily at the particle surfaces. Quantitative analyses of thermal mass loss behavior demonstrated that irradiated boehmite and gibbsite nanoparticles had higher activation energies than their pristine counterparts, with the extent of the increase dependent on the total dose. Taken together, these findings suggest that exposure to a sufficient dose of ionizing radiation alters these materials such that they are less prone to decomposition by dehydration. This increased stability may be due to the decreased hydrous nature of the samples after radiation exposure, which was supported by further high temperature drop calorimetry. Additionally, a radiation-induced amorphous phase on the nanoparticle surfaces appears to have a permanent and positive influence on their thermodynamic stabilities.

Facet-dependent dispersion and aggregation of aqueous hematite nanoparticles

Nanoparticle aggregates in solution controls surface reactivity and function. Complete dispersion often requires additive sorbents to impart a net repulsive interaction between particles. Facet engineering of nanocrystals offers an alternative approach to produce monodisperse suspensions simply based on facet-specific interaction with solvent molecules. Here, we measure the dispersion/aggregation of three morphologies of hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles in varied aqueous solutions using ex situ electron microscopy and in situ small-angle x-ray scattering. We demonstrate a unique tendency of (104) hematite nanoparticles to maintain a monodisperse state across a wide range of solution conditions not observed with (001)- and (116)-dominated particles. Density functional theory calculations reveal an inert, densely hydrogen-bonded first water layer on the (104) facet that favors interparticle dispersion. Results validate the notion that nanoparticle dispersions can be controlled through morphology for specific solvents, which may help in the development of various nanoparticle applications that rely on their interfacial area to be highly accessible in stable suspensions.

Mobility Selective Ion Soft-Landing and Characterization Enabled Using Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulation

In this study, while conventional ion-soft landing uses the mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio to achieve molecular selection for deposition, here we demonstrate the use of Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulation (SLIM) for mobility-based ion selection and deposition. The dynamic rerouting capabilities of SLIM were leveraged to enable the rerouting of a selected range of mobilities to a different SLIM path (rather than MS) that terminated at a deposition surface. A selected mobility range from a phosphazene ion mixture was rerouted and deposited with a current pulse (~150 pA) resembling its mobility peak. In addition, from a mixture of tetra-alkyl ammonium (TAA) ions containing chain lengths of C5–C8, selected chains (C6, C7) were collected on a surface, reconstituted into solution-phase, and subsequently analyzed with a SLIM-qToF to obtain an IMS/MS spectrum, confirming the identity of the selected species. Further, this method was used to characterize triply charged tungsten-polyoxometalate anions, PW 12 O 40 3– (WPOM). The arrival time distribution of the IMS/MS showed multiple peaks associated with the triply charged anion (PW 12 O 40 3– ), of which a selected ATD was deposited and imaged using TEM. Additionally, the identity of the deposited WPOM was ascertained using energy-dispersive (EDS) spectroscopy. Further, we present theory and computations that reveal ion landing energies, the ability to modulate the energies, and deposition spot sizes.

Altered cortical thickness-based structural covariance networks in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Cognitive impairment is a common complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and early cognitive dysfunction may be associated with abnormal changes in the cerebral cortex. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the cortical thickness-based structural topological network changes in T2DM patients without mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Fifty-six T2DM patients and 59 healthy controls underwent neuropsychological assessments and sagittal 3-dimensional T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging. Then, we combined cortical thickness-based assessments with graph theoretical analysis to explore the abnormalities in structural covariance networks in T2DM patients. Correlation analyses were performed to investigate the relationship between the altered topological parameters and cognitive/clinical variables. T2DM patients exhibited significantly lower clustering coefficient (C) and local efficiency (Elocal) values and showed nodal property disorders in the occipital cortical, inferior temporal, and inferior frontal regions, the precuneus, and the precentral and insular gyri. Moreover, the structural topological network changes in multiple nodes were correlated with the findings of neuropsychological tests in T2DM patients. Thus, while T2DM patients without MCI showed a relatively normal global network, the local topological organization of the structural network was disordered. Moreover, the impaired ventral visual pathway may be involved in the neural mechanism of visual cognitive impairment in T2DM patients. This study enriched the characteristics of gray matter structure changes in early cognitive dysfunction in T2DM patients.

Effect of Adsorbed Carboxylates on the Dissolution of Boehmite Nanoplates in Highly Alkaline Solutions

Understanding the dissolution of boehmite in highly alkaline solutions is important to the processing of the complex nuclear wastes stored at the Hanford (WA) and Savannah River (SC) sites. Here, we report the adsorption of model carboxylate anions on boehmite nanoplates in alkaline solutions and their effects on subsequent boehmite dissolution in 3 M NaOH at 80 °C. Although expectedly lower than at circumneutral pH, adsorption of oxalate at pH 13 at room temperature was significant and remained so through a linear decrease to 3 M NaOH conditions with no evidence for the appearance of new phases. Modeling of the adsorption data and rate were consistent with the formation of outer-sphere surface complexes. By using these conditions to preload the boehmite nanoplates with oxalate, and separately acetate, we measured and compared their dissolution behavior at 80 °C and observed a clear suppression of the dissolution rate for the case of adsorbed oxalate by 23% and for adsorbed acetate by 10% compared to pure solids. Ex situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization revealed no detectable difference in the morphologic evolution of the dissolving boehmite materials. In conclusion, we nonetheless conclude that pre-adsorbed carboxylate anions, even as nominally weakly bound outer-sphere complexes, can persist on the surface through highly alkaline conditions, decreasing the density of dissolution-active sites and thereby adding an extrinsic control on the dissolution rate.

A multi-task neural network for the simultaneous identification of multiple compounds from XRD data obtained in a synchrotron-based hydrothermal fluid system. To enhance the alignment between the training and test datasets, random noise is introduced into the synthetic training dataset, and minor labeled experimental data is incorporated. Additionally, we employ a weighted cross-entropy loss function to address data imbalances and ensure smoother model training.

Solution synthesis of two-dimensional zinc oxide (ZnO)/molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) heterostructure through reactive templating for enhanced visible-light degradation of rhodamine B

Numerous inorganic materials have been identified as potential candidates for high-performance photocatalysts. However, their solar-to-energy conversion efficiencies still fail to meet commercial requirements. Here, the main hurdle is the rapid recombination of photoexcited electrons and holes in single-phase materials. A viable predicted approach to suppress charge recombination is coupling two materials to form a two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure that physically separates photoinduced electrons and holes in different layers. In this work, the heterostructure-based paradigm was tested and a scalable solution synthesis of epitaxial ZnO-MoS 2 heterostructure was developed. A 2D ZnO-MoS 2 heterostructure was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by stabilizing intermediate Zn-hydroxide states on a functionalized MoS 2 surface. Detailed characterization showed the formation of multilayer heterostructure with MoS 2 flakes intercalated between large size ZnO plates. The performance of this heterostructure was evaluated using photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B. A degradation efficiency of 70% was measured within 90 minutes of visible-light irradiation, almost doubling the efficiency of the corresponding single-phase materials or their physical mixtures.

Resolving Nanoscale Processes during Carbon Mineralization Using Identical Location Transmission Electron Microscopy

Basalt reservoirs offer the potential for carbon mineralization, aiding in achieving net-zero emissions. However, debates persist about microscopic crystallization mechanisms due to limited characterization techniques under high-temperature and pressure conditions. By using Identical Location Transmission Electron Microscopy (IL-TEM) and cryo-TEM, this study reveals nanoscale interfacial carbonation processes of forsterite and diopside nanoparticles in water-saturated supercritical carbon dioxide under realistic reservoir conditions. Further, both minerals undergo preferential metal cation dissolution into a thin water film, forming porous Si-rich amorphous layers, supporting the leached layer mechanism as the dominant mineral reactivity process. Diopside’s amorphous layer has lower porosity and growth rate relative to forsterite, likely related to the connectivity of silicate tetrahedra. Kinetically favorable nesquehonite and aragonite nanocrystals form on the amorphous layers. These findings support the development of accurate reservoir simulations and help enable commercial-scale carbon storage deployment.

Proton Relay for the Rate Enhancement of Electrochemical Hydrogen Reactions at Heterogeneous Interfaces

Proton transfer is critically important to many electrocatalytic reactions, and directed proton delivery could open new avenues for the design of electrocatalysts. However, although this approach has been successful in molecular electrocatalysis, proton transfer has not received the same attention in heterogeneous electrocatalyst design. Here, in this work, we report that a metal oxide proton relay can be built within heterogeneous electrocatalyst architectures and improves the kinetics of electrochemical hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions. The volcano-type relationship between activity enhancement and pK a of amine additives confirms this improvement; we observe maximum rate enhancement when the pK a of a proton relay matches the pH of the electrolyte solution. Density-functional-theory-based reactivity studies reveal a decreased proton transfer energy barrier with a metal oxide proton relay. These findings demonstrate the possibility of controlling the proton delivery and enhancing the reaction kinetics by tuning the chemical properties and structures at heterogeneous interfaces.

Broadside coupled coplanar inductors

A broadside coupled coplanar inductor device includes first and second coplanar inductors in which the conductors of the first and second coplanar inductors are broadside coupled. The conductors are located one above the other at a first distance and the return paths are located to the side of the respective first and second conductor signal paths at a second distance. One or both of the dimensions of the first and second first distances is defined so as to maximize a mutual inductance between the conductors. First and second driver circuit apply voltages across each conductor. The input pulse width modulation signals applied to the first and second driver circuits are 180 degrees out of phase.

High‐Entropy Lithium Argyrodite Solid Electrolytes Enabling Stable All‐Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract Superionic solid electrolytes (SEs) are essential for bulk‐type solid‐state battery (SSB) applications. Multicomponent SEs are recently attracting attention for their favorable charge‐transport properties, however a thorough understanding of how configurational entropy (ΔS conf ) affects ionic conductivity is lacking. Here, we successfully synthesized a series of halogen‐rich lithium argyrodites with the general formula Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl x Br 1.5‐x (0≤x≤1.5). Using neutron powder diffraction and 31 P magic‐angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the S 2− /Cl − /Br − occupancy on the anion sublattice was quantitatively analyzed. We show that disorder positively affects Li‐ion dynamics, leading to a room‐temperature ionic conductivity of 22.7 mS cm −1 (9.6 mS cm −1 in cold‐pressed state) for Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 0.8 Br 0.7 (ΔS conf =1.98R). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental evidence that configurational entropy of the anion sublattice correlates with ion mobility. Our results indicate the possibility of improving ionic conductivity in ceramic ion conductors by tailoring the degree of compositional complexity. Moreover, the Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 0.8 Br 0.7 SE allowed for stable cycling of single‐crystal LiNi 0.9 Co 0.06 Mn 0.04 O 2 (s‐NCM90) composite cathodes in SSB cells, emphasizing that dual‐substituted lithium argyrodites hold great promise in enabling high‐performance electrochemical energy storage.

Assessing Multi-Dimensional Impacts of Achieving Sustainability Goals by Projecting the Sustainable Agriculture Matrix Into the Future

The concept of sustainability inherently spans multiple spatial scales, sectors, variables, and time horizons. This study links a recently developed method of assessing present-day agricultural sustainability across environmental, economic, and social dimensions with a process-based integrated assessment model, in order to allow forward-looking analysis of sustainability by region and scenario. The sustainable agriculture matrix estimates present-day agricultural sustainability at the national level using 18 indicator variables, of which this study estimates nine to the year 2100, using an enhanced version of the Global Change Analysis Model. Scenarios include a reference scenario, and scenarios that apply the following measures, both individually and in combination, that are thought to improve sustainability: yield intensification, transition toward more plant-based (“flexitarian”) diets, and economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions mitigation. The scenarios illustrate considerable complexity and tradeoffs inherent to efforts to improve agricultural sustainability in all regions globally. For example, yield intensification typically increases nitrogen pollution, flexitarian diets can reduce agricultural output, and greenhouse gas mitigation efforts may either increase deforestation or crowd out crop and livestock production due to consequent bioenergy demands. However, there is considerable inter-regional heterogeneity in the responses, and the importance of such secondary responses also differs by region. The analysis and post-processing methods developed in this study allow quantification and visualization of the absolute and relative magnitude of the tradeoffs between agricultural sustainability indicator variables across regions, time periods, and scenarios.

High-throughput solubility determination for data-driven materials design and discovery in redox flow battery research

Solubility is crucial for redox flow batteries because it affects their energy density. A data-driven approach based on artificial intelligence/machine learning models can accelerate the development of highly soluble redox-active materials, but the lack of relevant, large-quantity data makes accurate solubility prediction difficult. To overcome this deficiency, we developed a high-throughput experimentation process that combines a robotically controlled platform with high-throughput methodology to collect large-scale and high-quality solubility data. We demonstrate the potential utility and applicability of this high-throughput process by measuring the aqueous and non-aqueous solubilities of redox-active materials and studying the effect of additives on their solubilities for both aqueous and non-aqueous redox flow battery applications. A redox flow battery based on our optimized negative electrolyte formulation and a ferrocyanide-positive electrolyte offers highly stable performance over 18 days (>100 cycles) with consistent capacity and a 24% boost in energy density.

FAST Drift Scan Survey for Ηι Intensity Mapping: I. Preliminary Data Analysis

This work presents the initial results of the drift-scan observation for the neutral hydrogen (Hi) intensity mapping survey with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The data analyzed in this work were collected in night observations from 2019 through 2021. The primary findings are based on 28 hr of drift-scan observation carried out over 7 nights in 2021, which covers 60 deg 2 sky area. Our main findings are, first, our calibration strategy can successfully correct both the temporal and bandpass gain variation over the 4 hr drift-scan observation. Second, the continuum maps of the surveyed region are made with frequency resolution of 28 kHz and pixel area of $_{2.95\,{\mathrm{arcmin}}^{2}}$. The pixel noise levels of the continuum maps are slightly higher than the forecast assuming $T$ sys = 20 K, which are 36.0 mK (for 10.0 s integration time) at the 1050–1150 MHz band, and 25.9 mK (for 16.7 s integration time) at the 1323–1450 MHz band, respectively. Third, the flux-weighted differential number count is consistent with the NRAO-VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalog down to the confusion limit ~7 mJy beam –1 . Finally, the continuum flux measurements of the sources are consistent with those found in the literature. The difference in the flux measurement of 81 isolated NVSS sources is about 6.3%. Our research offers a systematic analysis for the FAST Hi intensity mapping drift-scan survey and serves as a helpful resource for further cosmology and associated galaxies sciences with the FAST drift-scan survey.
