Electron shuttle in the MOF derived TiO 2 /CuO heterojunction boosts light driven hydrogen evolution

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a novel template to develop porous photocatalytic materials for solar fuel conversion. In this work, we report the synthesis, charge separation dynamics, and photocatalytic performance of the TiO 2 /CuO heterostructure derived from mixed-phase MOFs based on Ti and Cu metal nodes, which demonstrates significantly enhanced catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) compared to metal oxides derived from single node MOFs. More importantly, using transient absorption spectroscopy, we identified the specific role each component in the heterostructure plays and unravelled the key intermediate species that is responsible for the exceptional photocatalytic activity of the heterostructure. We found that the HER is initiated with ultrafast electron transfer (<150 fs) from the molecular photosensitizer to the conduction band of TiO 2 , where TiO 2 acts as an electron mediator and shuttles the electron to the CuO cocatalyst, facilitating charge separation and ultimately boosting the HER efficiency. Overall, these results not only demonstrate the great potential of using mixed-phase MOFs as templates to synthesize mesoporous heterostructure photocatalysts but also provide important insight into the HER mechanism.

Site-Selective Probes of Mixed-Node Metal Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a novel platform offering new promise for photocatalytic applications. In this work, we report a mixed-node MOF (MOF-74) based on earth-abundant metals (i.e., Co and Fe) as highly active and robust photocatalysts for visible light-driven H 2 generation. Using in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy which allows us to selectively probe the individual metal node in MOFs, we unambiguously identified the catalytic active sites and captured the key intermediate species under the standard catalytic conditions. We show that both Co and Fe centers in MOF-74 are the reversible active sites, and the accumulation of their reduced states is responsible for the observed induction period for H 2 generation. Moreover, we captured the key intermediate species formed when the reaction reaches equilibrium, which is featured by an elongated Co–O bond at the Co center and a more distorted octahedral geometry at the Fe center with respect to their original geometry. These results not only demonstrate the potential of MOF-74 as a single site catalyst for H 2 generation but also provide new insight into the catalytic mechanism for further development.
