Anodic dendrite formation is a critical issue in rechargeable batteries and often leads to poor cycling stability and quick capacity loss. Prevailing strategies for dendrite suppression aim at slowing down the growth rate kinetically but still leaving possibilities for dendrite evolution over time. Herein, we report a complete dendrite elimination strategy using a mesoporous ferroelectric polymer membrane as the battery separator. The dendrite suppression is realized by spontaneously reversing the surface energetics for metal ion reduction at the protrusion front, where a positive piezoelectric polarization is generated and superimposed as the protrusion compresses the separator. This effect is demonstrated first in a Zn electroplating process, and further in Zn–Zn symmetric cells and Zn–NaV 3 O 8 ·1.5H 2 O full cells, where the dendritic Zn anode surfaces are completely turned into featureless flat surfaces. Consequently, a substantially longer charging/discharging cycle is achieved. Furthermore, this study provides a promising pathway toward high-performance dendrite-free rechargeable batteries.
Glycine, the simplest amino acid, is considered a promising functional biomaterial owing to its excellent biocompatibility and strong out-of-plane piezoelectricity. Practical applications require glycine films to be manufactured with their strong piezoelectric polar $\langle$001$\rangle$ direction aligned with the film thickness. Based on the recently-developed solidification approach of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glycine aqueous solution, in this work, we demonstrate that the crystal orientation of the as-synthesized film is determined by the orientation of glycine crystal nuclei. By controlling the local nucleation kinetics via surface curvature tuning, here we shifted the nucleation site from the edge to the middle of the liquid film, and thereby aligned the $\langle$001$\rangle$ direction vertically. As a result, the PVA–glycine–PVA sandwich film exhibits the highest average piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 6.13 ± 1.13 pC N –1 . This work demonstrates a promising kinetic approach to achieve crystallization and property control in a scalable biocrystal manufacturing process.

The extremely large surface area offered by quasi-two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures is a great advantage for catalytic applications. While bimetallic materials have been discovered as a group of promising catalysts for electrochemical water splitting, a facile and reliable synthesis approach toward 2D morphology to fully release its electrochemical catalytic potential is still lacking. In this work, bimetallic Co–Mo–O ultrathin nanosheets were synthesized by ionic layer epitaxy with controlled composition ratio. The Co–Mo–O nanosheets exhibited a quadrangle shape with a uniform thickness of ~2.5 nm. This 2D morphology largely enriched the surface catalytic active site ratio. Particularly, nanosheets with 2:1 Co-to-Mo ratio showed a substantially enhanced OER catalytic activity with a 3 orders of magnitude higher mass activity compared to benchmark IrO 2 and RuO 2 in an alkaline environment. Furthermore, this study introduces a promising possibility for creating high-performance electrocatalysts from 2D bimetallic materials with a high efficiency for material utilization.
Bioresorbable implantable electronics require power sources that are also bioresorbable with controllable electrical output and lifetime. In this paper, we report a bioresorbable zinc primary battery anode filament based on a zinc microparticle (MP) network coated with chitosan and Al 2 O 3 double shells. When discharged in 0.9% NaCl saline, a Zn MP filament with a 0.17 × 2 mm 2 cross-sectional area exhibited a stable voltage output of 0.55 V at a current of 0.01 mA. Covered by chitosan and Al 2 O 3 double shells, the zinc MP filament exhibited a directional dissolution behavior with a tunable lifetime approximately linear to its length. A stable 200 h discharging time was achieved with a 15 mm Zn MP filament. The maximum output power was found to be 12 μW at 0.03 mA for one filament. The linearity relationship between the current output and the filament cross-sectional area suggested a facile strategy to raise the power output at constant discharging voltage. The filaments could also be connected in series and in parallel to boost its overall voltage and current output, demonstrating their excellent integration capability. Furthermore, this work presents a promising pathway toward bioresorbable transient batteries with controllable lifetime and power output, demonstrating a great potential for powering transient implantable biomedical devices.
